For those of you watching who have never made a quilt, and fancy having a go....DO IT! This was sooo satisfying and really not too hard, but....be warned! I am now onto my third (way more complex, "art" quilt) with the material and plans for a fourth....and fifth. I now seem to possess about a quarter of the world's reserves of cotton prints, and have four sewing machines in my eBay watch list.

@@CassandraMiles Me too! I moved from a small-yet-powerful '70s Frister Rossman to a Singer 4423 heavy duty (which absolutely flies). I have now made two birch trees "art" quilts and a printed circuit board design from Sylvia at Flying Parrot Quilts.

I have two quilts made by my grandmother and I've always loved the bits of fabric she used and the pattern of them as well. I want to make my own because those are too fragile to be used, but my grandmother definitely inspired me to look into quilting

Guys watching this in 2023 give a thumbs up! My mom, before she passed, collected quite a bit of fabric for quilting, but wore herself out caring for my dad. I'm making a quilt in her honor with the fabric she collected.

I agree completely! I have made a couple of sort-of (ahem) quilts before and am now making another for our latest grandchild, out of some squares I sewed together by hand over several years!! I was just putting the layers together and thought - "oh I don't really know exactly the right way to do this so I'll find a video...." As a result I've got to do some unpicking but never mind. You two ladies both have an amazing ability to teach clearly and I have learnt a lot. Thank you! I will have a look at your other videos.

I used to think that quilting was on another skill, level. Like engineering skill level!
I thought that I could never achieve the ability and knowledge to sew a quilt because quilts have always looks so complex to me.
Well this year thanks to this single video, I have embarked on making a quilt and im about to put the binding on it and wow! I NEVER thought quilting could be so easy! I have sewn clothes which are 4d and a quilt is 2d so it’s WAY easier than making clothes! I’ve really had a mind shift and I’ve surprised myself with how it is turning out!
Thank y’all so much for inspiring me and encouraging me to make my very first quilt!!

Does your walking foot have a bar that you attach to the foot? Mine does and it's purpose is to evenly sew when doing straight line quilting. Another option besides taping.

I’m very new to machine sewing. Usually only turning up trousers where I always make a few backstitches at the start and end to lock the stitches and stop them undoing. When I sew the squares together, do I make a short backstitch at the start and end of sewing?

I finally got my first sewing machine for my birthday yesterday. I've already ordered fabric for my first quilt. I'm going to make one for each of my children. Then go from there. I cannot wait!! My grandmother was a quilter. She would always send my sister and I home with some of her squares and I'd spend the next 2 weeks sewing them together by hand (very poorly) 🤣

I’ve never quilted. Don’t know many men who have but I have a few antique quilts from GG-Grandmother, G-Grandmother, and Grandmother (I don’t think my mother ever did any, she was into knitting and crocheting). I have been wanting to try it for a long time and after watching this I definitely feel more confident. I will do a couple small ones like this to practice but eventually, I want to make a larger one with the hundreds of Crown Royal bags of different materials and colors, that I have been collecting for many years. Thank you for this detailed and well articulated video!!

I’ve picked up a few quilts at the “thrift” stores although my stores don’t seem to be as thrifty as yours. I usually pay about $10 for medium sized quilts. It makes me sad to see them in there. Soooooo much thought, time, effort, money and typically love that goes into them to just be discarded. The ones I have found have been in great condition.

I needed a video that discussed the basics of quilt assembly--and this was perfect! I quilt, but I don't follow any measurements or classic design principles. I love to just randomly sew strips of whatever fabric I love together along with muslin pieces embellished with ribbon or yarn. BUT, I was stumped as to how to put the quilt sandwich together and attach the binding. Calling this "the ultimate beginners guide..." is quite accurate. Your video is very clear and thorough. You have removed the potential terrors and pitfalls for a beginner. I've been quilting for a few years now but have always struggled with the binding step. From now on I'll simply use the method you demonstrated. Thank you for making the process so accessible to those just beginning (and everyone, actually). Offering the option of using charm packs to eliminate the cutting step will save time and effort and will get the quilter to the satisfying final step all the sooner. Brilliant!

Very helpful tutorial, since I just wanted to make a quilt for my zero-G chair, too funky shaped to find in a store. I've only done garments, so some different steps I wouldn't have considered. I also had to buy a walking foot for my machine, as it's just a standard sewing, so it's good to see that in operation and that it gets used during the binding process as well. The Juki sounds like an old school rotary phone when it's sped up.

this is a really good tutorial - you even express how to move hand over the ruler for cutting without releasing pressure (which means the ruler and fabric stay put while you're roller-cutting)! First time I've seen someone clearly explain to walk the hand over the ruler. :D

I’ve learned so much from this video ❤️. I’ve made so many quilts but they’ve never been right-they’re functional and cozy but not beautiful and the seams don’t always line up. But, I never bothered to really learn how to do things the right way, like pressing the seams in the opposite direction.
