If im not mistaken, this video is how to prevent this. I have suffered this fate yet can not find the files even after a deep cavity search of the entire drive. So I think it would be informative to possibly have a follow up video on how to recover those missing files. Thanks for all the great content!
they may not be recoverable if you preeminently deleted the files.
If you have multiple Drives in your system, check every folder in each Drive. If you don't locate them then they must have been deleted at some point. Good luck and this serves all of us a reminder to always backup our files regularly.

I came to and watched this entire video because it was the top result in a "Studio One How to Reconnect Missing Files" search, yet you never said how to do that. 😭

Thanks a million for this great video! Folder organization is extremely important, and creating a new folder with the correct file path already inside of it is a great idea. Making sure everything is straightened out between the internal and external drives can be dauting, but it is well worth it.

ok i was having problems with saving i watched all this tutorial problem solved i had to go in to my drives and make sure the 3 folders are all there plus the session file

Mac Studio M1 is what I am using
Studio one 5 professional says all my files are installed but I can not play them. MVP loops impact xt presence xt I can’t use any since I did the most recent update help.

I’m seeing this video after already facing the issue. I didn’t delete anything at all though, my mac wasn’t allowing em to update my iCloud so I had to sign out and sign back into iCloud and when my max restarted my program couldn’t find any of the files I have no idea how to recover them
You can't...not easily anyway. Yes, you either moved or deleted something by mistake and separated the song file from the media folder. That's the only way this happens. you may want to consider

What happens when you check "Use cached plug-in data on save" option in the location tab of studio one?

OkI get that but, I have a question that's a little off topic here. I just switched out my computer and when I open up a session from the old pc, it shows that some plugins are missing. It has the plug in name but it's red. I installed all the plugins on my new machine. I even directed the correct look in folder under the plugins option but I get this quite often and usually have to reload the same plug-in from the plug-in manager on that track. Is there a way to stop this. Thanks
You may need to remove the plugin from your session and re-load it. If that does not work then something is not correct with the installation
I know this is an older video but I have a question. If I use “save to new folder” on a project I’ve been working on for a while, will Studio One now automatically look for the new location whenever I reopen that song, or will it look to the original location unless I tell it to look to the new location?
When you use "Save to New Folder" it makes a duplicate copy of everything so when you re-open, its not looking at the original but the new version

I purchased the Studio One 5 Pro Upgrade and now anxious to install this much improved version. Should I finish these current songs in 2.6 Pro before performing the upgrade?
What happens to my current songs if I go ahead and perform the upgrade now while these songs are still active mixing projects? Would love to know how you would handle this... Thanks in advance for any insight or best practice advice!

Great video! But sadly this didn't solve my missing files issue. My missing files are all recorded not imported, I've never moved, deleted nor renamed a single file in media folder and yet suddenly i got the same issue. I've checked all the possible locations that the file maybe stored but couldn't find it. And it happened the next day after i worked with the session, and what's worse is it's happening to my other sessions. Again all my missing files are not imported, never renamed, moved or deleted. If someone has this same issue i really need your help.

Helpfull yes but am i stuck with seeing that missing file box everytime ,Since i know longer have those files ,there were deleted but i still get the do i want to locate them..

Problem! I went to go open a session I am currently working on for a client, and I noticed the recent file list has been erased in it's entirety. I don't know what happened. Can you please help me resolve this matter? Feels like I lost all of my work. It's VERY FRUESTRATING!!! PLESE HELP.

I don;t get why this is so complicated. In Pro Tools when you get the dialogue box saying 'missing files' you click search, wait for the files to be found, and then click load and it loads them into the session. Why can't you do this in Studio One?
No idea, I am not the developer of Studio One. I can say that I would choose S1 over PT any day of the week.
How do you fix the problem. I appreciate the notes for future, but is there a way to fix.

Will we need to check the "Ask to copy external files..." box every time we create a session, or will it retain the checked box setting for future sessions?

for some reason, I don't get a popup to move a file to a media folder. It just saves the project. (checkbox enabled)

@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Oh, I see how it works. When I try to add .wav to the track that missed a file the popup doesn't show up, but when I add audio to a new track it works

you need to locate the missing files on your computer. That is the only way to fix it
Good to know, Thanx. My problem right now is I Just upgraded to Studio One 6 and now some of my native effects plugins (Multiband Dynamics ect...) are missing. Anyone got a fix?

Ok can someone explain how I could have lost all my Ghosthack files from the Studio One 6 browser file section? I don't remember doing anything stupid. And what would the procedure be to get them back? They are all intact in Ableton Live so this has to be a Studio One issue. Thanks for any insight into this predicament.
Not sure but I am certain its not the DAw that is the issue. My guess is that you separated the media folder and some of its files with out realizing it
Thanks for the great info. If I want to put my songs to a back up external drive do I do what you say by going to save to new folders and if so will it still stay in studio one too or does if move to new location thanks in advance

But how do I get my files back once they're gone? My last two years worth of work is now missing and I can't find it in my media folder.
you have to locate them on your computer which isn't easy, or they are gone forever if you deleted them with out knowing it.
I watched your video before transferring all of my Studio One files to a newly refurbished 2021 mac. I followed everything you said in this video exactly. Now on my new computer Studio One is not able to connect to the media folder which is in the same location and fully populated with all the source material. The pool feature of bulk updating the missing files didn't work and now Presonus tech support is saying I have to reconnect the media files manually to the song files. Help!!!
you did not follow it EXACTLY or you would not have lost your files
So here’s a weird one… open a song I hadn’t worked on for 6 months. The 2 drum tracks are missing yet no error message that there are missing files? Any ideas?

I am having this same issue as well as all of my vsts are gone, have re downloaded several times still having issues, some of them are still available but only as audio units and being very glitchy any tips

My Top left menu is missing: File, Edit, Song, Track, Event, etc. Do you know how to make it reappear?

Ok but HOW TO FIX IT. You only show how to prevent. Every time I find the missing files and relink, but next time I open it it's AGAIN missing everything. File links didn't save.
YOU CANT! You have to manually search your computer for the missing files and if you have lots of sessions, you'll never be able to tell which audio files goes to which session. good luck! This video is to tell you how to prevent it form happening in the future

Excellent, excellent info. I just encountered this problem. But it was encountered in connection with moving stuff to a new computer (PC). I have been using studio one for years, now 4.6.2. I downloaded this version to my new computer and then transfereed files to the new computer. (Didn't check the box to copy external files, before watching this video). When I tried to open songs on the downloaded version, I got the dreaded screen which opened your video. From what I understand from this video. I should go to my old computer, open each song on Studio one and resave it, chceking the box to "save to media files.). After that when I again transfer the song files to my new computer, they should be able to recognize and load all the related files which were originally imported from other band members via dropbox. Correct?
Watch the video again. Its not just checking off tat "box" That is ONLY when you are importing files. Watch the video again. Take notes

Simply put my question is: If you DIDN'T CHECK THE BOX THE FIRST TIME you save with imported files, is there a simple way to get the imported files into a media folder so that you move the song to an external drive? If not do you have to locate the missing files and manually drag them into the song folder?
Sorry about the last reply. I spent more time with the thing and realized that you did touch on it in the video. I had to use "Save to a New Folder" and it worked. Everything is fine. Just need to download ver. 5.5 since I learned that Windows 11 does not support versions below 5.4. Thanks again. Very good and informative video.
No worries. Most people don't take the time to carefully watch the videos, I cant tell you how many questions I receive on a daily basis about issues that I answer in my videos. People are just too impatience these days. If they dont get they answer in under 2 minutes, they loose focus....LOL.

I turned my computer off and back on now files are missing what on earth happened… audio files are there but my keyboard sounds are showing up on the screen but won’t play, when studio one restarted it accept rules and regulations of studio one….? I said yes and all my recent song list are gone…
This is the 3rd comment you left about this issue. you need someone to walk through your setup and see what isn't set up correctly. Its not the software I can assure you of that

I accidentally deleted my media file from my computer . so i can't get it back. no way. they are loops from a looppack that I bought at studio one. (I can put them back in sessions, but I have to drag them in one by one from the looppack. Because the pool is also empty.( google transl. I'm Dutch)THX 4 the vid.
