  • My nerdy dream is to own a small telescope that is as sharp as a multi-million dollar observatory. And thanks to my supporters who donated £1400 I have enough cash to test out a neat trick which I hope will make my dream come true... Heads up there are a few bumps along the way😱

(Please take what I've written below as helpful commentary, I loved the video and am cheering all the way).
I'm watching this hoping wildly that the three armed spider with fine wire doesn't result in 12 very long diffraction spikes. The reason for four arms is that each arm creates a diffraction spike across the star - and with four arms, properly aligned (they weren't in your first, blurry image) the diffraction spikes overlap, so you wind up with four spikes instead of 8. With arms 120° out, you'll get 6 spikes. Additionally, thicker arms generally yield less diffraction, so the spikes are sharp, bright, and short. Thinner arms yield longer, more diffuse spikes (just like small holes make more diffusion, small obstructions do the same). So just going by how things ought to work out, I'm expecting 6 crazy long diffraction spikes (minimum - if the upper and lower wires aren't perfectly aligned, each will create its own pair of spikes - but Kerry seems like a bit of a wizard, so I'm guessing it's going to be 6) from the thin, thin wire that was initially tried and 6 moderate ones from the much thicker guitar strings.
EDIT: Well poo. 6 prominent diffraction spikes with at least two pairs of wires slightly misaligned (so 10-12 long spikes). They're all close, but at that thickness getting them to overlap perfectly is going to be very, very difficult. You've also got some other obstruction in there that is 60° off of the spider wires. Not sure what that is, but it's generating another set of minor spikes, and then the fuzziness around the star is some additional obstruction - likely (at least in part) the tube of your coma corrector getting into the light path because it's so long and the focuser had to be racked all the way in. Kerry's mirror cell holder, with the disk around the edge, that's brilliant. Amazing idea. Normally you'd need to mask the clips to avoid yet another set of mangy diffraction fuzz.

Rory is an absolute legend in my opinion, lots of other content on TH-cam, "which don't get me wrong" is very education and has helped me a lot throughout the years, but Rory although a little bonkers 🤣 reminds me of so many of my astro buddies who don't conform to the conventional, keep up the good work you are a legend ....

What a wonderful discovery to have found your channel. I absolutely love these telescope challenges.
I own a celestron 8. But it is stowed away in my attic. Your enthousiasm makes me to dig it up tomorrow.
I will have to learn all over again how to set it up. I remember why my initial enthousiasm died before getting my first real views.
I live in the most light polluted areas in Holland. But i guess if I start tomorrow maybe this winter there'll be some viewing opportunities.
Thank for lighting this flame again. I have subscribed to your channel and hope for more content .
    Cheers Martin.

You make me feel a lot better about myself as im super clumbsy lol, my cat knocked my little refractor off my cabinet the other week and it had everything attached to it, cameras, guide scope, eaf etc, a bit scared somethings not right now and ive not even had it that long. luckily it landed on soft carpeted floor. would have cried if it was solid ground 😱

Your channel is the best I have seen on TH-cam, that makes astrophotography accessible to the most people. The way that you take simple equipment, cobble it together, and make something fantastic is the best part. I was also wondering if the Astrobiscuit is going to get new gear? My Astrobiscuit t-shirt is getting thread bare. The real fans of your channel will be patient. I simply tide myself over by rewatching your older material, and I sometimes pick up new things. Your channel has a solid fan base.

good luck with this projects! Maybe you should think about the "transport-case" of the final Version. --> airplane cargo and the baggage handling and loading. Maybe you want to invent some type of "transport tube" or something like this to protect your gear from the cargo handlers at the airport :-)

I think the strings are breaking because when you adjust it on one string, you need to loosen the opposite strings too and just meet in the middle.
They shouldn't be breaking that easily, unless they are FAR too tight.
Basically I think they are fighting against each other in a tug of war, when they all just need to be in a nice balance that is stable enough for vibrations to not interfere with the image.
Guitar strings do indeed stretch, that's how they work, but these are way too tight.
If electric guitar strings don't fix the problem, there are Cobalt e guitar strings that might be worth a try.
But if that doesn't fix it, why not just use those Carbon Fiber strands in the shop that he had you try to pull apart? I would think those carbon fiber strands would be the best material for this job!

Not only am i impressed by your luck to see the Aurora after all the bad luck, i think you have also captured some STEVE's (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement) at the same time at 22:25 (about in the middle of the still images)! You should check your raw data for them!

You continue to be one of the most entertaining and enlightening channels in the history of TH-cam. Both times you broke the scope I had flash backs of ALL the near disasters with our own scopes, my father and I. Including the nightmare inducing horrific time our magnificent home built 22inch’s top hat SOMEHOW wasn’t secured properly in the back of the pickup and went hurtling into the middle of the I-5 in Southern California. And not just any part of the I-5 but The Grapevine! By the time my father and I got over to the shoulder and stopped, the top hat was a quarter mile behind us in moderate to heavy traffic. We thought FOR SURE any second an 18-wheeler or similar large vehicle was going to turn our beloved telescope part into splinters before our eyes. FORTUNATELY every driver that passed was alert enough to avoid it and between Dad’s adrenaline fueled sprint and my maniacal backing of the truck we rescued it safe and sound with only minor scratches on the woodwork to show for the misadventure. We have since started using cargo netting and packing blankets, as well as straps when securing such precious items. Cheers and keep up the amazing work!

So, in essence, you just need some titanium guitar strings that cannot break and you're sorted. Or, based on your on-video demonstration, maybe some carbon fiber filament/string.
