  • Part 2 of our Mine Run 160 series brings us north to the Payne's Farm Battlefield, preserved by the members of the American Battlefield Trust. Join Dr. Chris Mackowski and Dan Davis. #mineruntour #paynesfarmtour
The members of the American Battlefield Trust have saved almost 1,400 acres of the Mine Run Campaign since 2002.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

I have visted most of the Battle fields in VA, I need to add this one to the list. Everytime I visit one of these battlefields I end my trip at the Appomattox Courthouse.

It was frigid when we did the preservation event, but I had a blast. I'm glad it's preserved and getting some well-earned publicity.

I move that that the Mine Run Campaign consists of two distinct battles: the Battle of Payne's Farm and the Battle of Robinson's Tavern. This will be important when the trust preserves the area near New Hope Church, which is 5 miles from Payne's Farm. So it will be a little awkward associating that land and battle with the Payne's Farm name of the battle.

Thank you! This was good. Could have used another map or two with arrows of who is moving where, particularly around the Widow Morris area. It's a little confusing as "Jacobs Ford Road" has changed names. Consider you can superimpose red and blue rectangles over the current (drone) footage. Keep saving hallowed ground! And thank you for teaching us about this battle.

@@chrisdavern9482 It is a strange feeling to stand on the land a picture the Battle. The most emotional was walking Pickett's Charge ( Pickett , Trimble, Pettigrew

Charge probably because so many of my Ancestors were there and knowing what they went through. That they held together so long is Amazing, my ancestors survived the attack some wounded. They did their Duty, and preserved their Honor. It is just sad it was for nothing as there weren't enough left to do the job.

@@chrisdavern9482 I agree and as I can no longer travel, they bring back a lot of memories.
Well produced and I don't have to pull out books that cover the Battle and Battlefield

Definitely wear old shoes on this battlefield, especially if not in summertime. It can get quite muddy in the middle of the woods

From the sounds of it, when he was removed from the Army of the Potomac later on, French completely deserved it. Between his fondness of the bottle and his poor tactical performances at Antietam and in the Mine Run Campaign, he botched up Meade's chances of potentially finishing off the Army of Northern Virginia sooner. On another note, if you look at photos of him, he strongly resembles King Edward VII. Johnson clearly had a good plan but the Federals had the numbers on to their advantage. It is a good thing battle sites such as this are being preserved for our future, for we must never forget them.

@@MickeyJWind Sickles was just as bad, probably worse. He got the III Corps wrecked at Gettysburg. After that, it only survived until the end of the year.

I was hoping you would have done a Rappahannock Station / Kelly's Ford 160 last month. You mentioned it in your first Mine Run video
