  • My open air set up for my super happy veiled chameleon. This is a great set up for folks who want to give their lizard pet lots of freedom, but don't want their chameleon loose all over your house. Live pothos, zamifolia, and Spanish moss. Dripper reservoir and hanging feeding cup.
    Always looking for suggestions, so feel free to leave ideas in the comments. Thanks!

    I’m just glad I’m not the only crazy reptile guy out there, I’d love to chat about Steve and how things have come since you’ve posted this. I live in nh, I have now two “free roaming” veils. Wish I had thought about the dripper, I ended up using waterfalls and wax plants as a source of water as well as fiber.

    thinking about doing something like this, doesn't it get hot in the room being out in open?

      Are you asking if the set-up gets hot or if the room gets hot? The bulb contributes some extra heat, but it is the same amount of heat that would be produced if you used an enclosure. If the bulb is making heat, it has to dissipate inside of the room no matter where you have it pointed. I have it far enough away that the basking perch gets to right around 90F. The bottom of the enclosure stays at room temp. That's one of the nice aspect of open-air set-ups; enclosures tend to homogenize the heat which makes it difficult to maintain a gradient.
      Good luck with your set up!

    How messy is it to have a chammelan room free cage like the one you have set up? I actually never thought about doing this.

      Jonathan White It's no mess at all. His excrement and excess water from the dripper all end up in the bottom planter and keep the plants happy.

    Do you have any luck with fruits or veggies with Steve? I have a similar set up for my Alfred on my page. Does he ever try to eat the dirt?

    • @andisa.4133
      @andisa.4133  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      coyfish227 He certainly eats the pothos. I've tried hanging lettuce in the branches, but he's never shown interest. Occasionally he has eaten dirt. Apparently lots of chameleons will do it at times.

      Andis A. yeah mine loves to eat his hibiscus, african violet, and Mulberry leaves. He was not into the pathos at all. I also read dirt eating was common but there was perlite in mine so I covered it in worm casting.

      nevermind :)

      Sorry, it is golden pothos. Great plant because it is hardy and doesn't mind being drenched all of the time under the dripper. Also, it is nontoxic and Steve eats it all of the time.

      where do you get one?

    • @andisa.4133
      @andisa.4133  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are really common. Check the houseplant section of any home store. Lowes and Home Depot always have them.

    what about the poop? doesn't it just fall to the ground?

    • @andisa.4133
      @andisa.4133  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very rarely. 95% ends up in the potted plant in the bottom as fertilizer. Chameleons defecate from perches, so I just make sure all of the lower perches have a fall line within the perimeter of the bottom pot. And when it does fall to the floor on occasion, reptile feces are really easy to clean up.
