Ah, yes. The days where brilliant engineers brought us the Rollins sound. These albums sound BETTER than 90% of the music recorded today. They really cared.
@Time_power101 Very often it sounds almost exploitative today. I was 18 when I started listening to some of those Chess, Prestige, and dare I say, even Columbia jazz albums. I wondered how the hell they could bring "live" to my living room!
Yes! It’s 4/29/24 and he’s still here. I hope SO MUCH that he knows how much he has impacted the world of music. Just listened to “Waiting on a Friend”. While I greatly admire the Stones, they were lucky to get Rollins to contribute his talent in 1981. He is a master. 🙏💚
I really mean this - my one wish is to see Sonny and shake his hand. He blessed my city of Chicago with such great and varied concerts from the 70's to the 2000's. He may be the last living great. Gawd, I hope he hits 110.
If people wonder what made Max Roach so great, this is a pretty good start. Nobody played the melody on the drums. And here's Max, quoting the melody on his cymbals, playing those toms like nobody else.
I think it's the same for me tbh! Either that or Dr. Mario (which I think borrows a version of the main hook). I spent my childhood extremely confused about this connection
Max's solo went under my radar until now, which is ofc a crying shame...if I "catch the one" it is mere fun....the whole tune is...turns every jazz session wild, the ladies are dancing....and you get dates, haha ;-)
Hip Tanaka would have almost certainly heard this before, and it's very common to "quote" jazz songs in general. I've always just assumed that phrase in "Chill" was a direct quote of St. Thomas.
There was a billy Holiday ad before this,i saw the whole thing and now im here, the only sonny albums im interested are saxophone colossus and way out west! 2:45 may be the first blastbeat on earth and originated from jazz and now common on metal!
@@peterduffy5020 Jazz was born in two places the Church and the Cotton Fields. If you can't say it like you feel it you might as well throw jazz down the tubes. I am not saying Jazz isn't classy - I'm saying that Jazz accepts you for who you are and works with you from there.
Happy 93rd birthday, Sonny!
I hope there's a lot more. I can't tell you how much Sonny means to us... live or on record.

@@jeffryhammel3035 so true. Mixing has gotten cleaner and boring. You can’t hear the life in music anymore.

Is Sonny involved with this channel? He deserves every bit of support we can give him.
200,000 views is probably worth about $200 but I agree - the artist should receive all the cash rewards for their own creations.
