The way to become a better teacher is to always be a student. You always should be learning something new, so it will be easy for you to put yourself in your student’s shoes. A new language, read music, play an instrument, learn to knit, or paint, etc.
thanks for this video. Now I am 17 y.o and a teacher . I have been working since I was 16. I am young enough but at the same time I have responsibility for my students ranging from 15 tom 43 . Pray for me. I hope i will be successful ever.
Wow! Absolutely Brilliant!! The world needs more teachers like him. If he can inspire so much in a single ted talk, imagine what teachers like him can accomplish during a semester.
Excellent talk! So simple, yet very powerful learning for teachers. I was expecting teaching 'Why'. Perhaps, that was implicit in the talk. There should be a Nobel prize for teachers. He should get one!
What I learned from this speech is "What do u think " it's wonderful it's applicable in real life also for ur own childern in life situvations making the questioned one to think about their questions makes them to become more intelligent and own problem solver.
Brilliant! Outstanding! Thank you sir, for that eyeopener. Thoroughly enjoyed your talk! You have put it so simply and so clearly. As a teacher trainer at university, this is just what I try to teach my trainees of English. Teaching is not equal to learning. One of the first questions we ask is, 'So you taught the lesson, but did they learn???' Moreover, we need a facilitator in class, not a lecturer.
This was an inspiring and incredible talk. For someone about to teach abroad for the first time this really helped me feel more confidence in teaching and connecting with the students. Thank you Mariappan !
YES, that was my question for years, "WHY AM I LEARNIGN THIS?" In every class that I took in college, teachers would walk in, do some maths on board, walk out and we were supposed to write them down on papers, but never told why I needed to learn this thing. I hate traditional teaching method in classroom, it never taught me anything. Honestly, duing my entire undergrad, I learnt almost 95% things from internet and youtube alone, my professors were very unhelpful in making me learn things. And, also I hate "teachers" who were never supposed to be teachers. I know countless people, who became a teacher after their "PhD" only because they were struggling to get a job after they graduated, they were never meant to teach.
I fully agree with you. You are very clear with the message if you can explain in simple terms then you teach well. So many skills have to be applied with great commitment in a lesson and this is only possible with a deep understanding of subject matter.
My nuclear physics teacher, and so many other physics teacher in NUS (Singapore) is horribly sucks. Till today I still keep his notes, and every time I opened the notes, I just cannot stop feeling my wasted youth by all the physics teacher. One outstanding one is TTChia and he motivates us through his charisma.
Liked the statement: If asked to explain again, if your teachers cannot explain it in a simpler manner, the teachers dont really know the subject. *Leave them Alone* . Very insightful talk!!
Very insightful Dr. Jawa. I teach young students and I am looking at ways to apply your insights. Although I align with most of your concepts to teaching, I havent exactly known a specific method to implement it. I now get the confidence that I am on the right track and with your reassurance am going to explore and adopt them in my classes. Thanks. Like to know more from you. wish I could connect with you somewhere online.
Not in school anymore, even my boss (in corporate world) is also telling me don't reinvent the wheel. When he don't understand anything, it is easy for him to say that. And then when you worked hard and finally reinvented the wheel, he will say your work is not appreciated, many others have done it before.

Good observation. Techniques are great but you need an overall strategy (pedagogical). I didn't discuss that in this talk.
Excellent speech
Vera level speech, I missed his class 😅
Not in school anymore, even my boss (in corporate world) is also telling me don't reinvent the wheel. When he don't understand anything, it is easy for him to say that. I would've watch another episode of him on and on...
