  • This is the third and final part of my summer motorcycle adventure around Vancouver Island, Canada on my Honda CB500X.
    Part 1: • Island Vibes: a solo m...
    Part 2: • Wild moto camping with...
    It was such a beautiful trip and I'm really thankful for all the great memories and the opportunity to explore such incredible places and spend time with my friend ‪@RosieGabrielle‬, but as you'll see from this video, motorcycle camping and being in the elements does take a toll.
    Thanks so much for watching and coming along for the ride. You guys make the effort worthwhile!

    It is so important to watch out for fatigue an exhaustion be it mental and/or physical especially when riding a motorcycle and then act accordingly. I have seen too many things go wrong when these factors were ignored. That is a very important message in your video.

    Motorbike camping can be a little hard work, I get it from staggering around in the pitch dark to go to the bathroom (I use that word loosely) to not always being able to get a hot shower and a comfortable sleep or we'll rounded meal, it's great fun but takes a bit out of you, I usually break trips up with a hotel every few nights maybe end of the week, not the cheapest I know but gives you something to mark on your trip calendar and let's you go a bit further and longer. Still a great feeling when you are heading home with another adventure under your belt. Can't wait for your next one, happy biking.

    • @MeganKaptein
      @MeganKaptein  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, Steve. I generally share that mentality, but this year it was nuts with covid. All the hotels and campsites were booked solid, and with Rosie and I both being non-planners, we literally had no options but to wild camp.

    Thank you, Megan, for such a wonderful video. Yes! You made the right decision. You should listen to your body and when it's too tired, that is a signal to get some rest at home. Riding a motorcycle, especially on a long trip with lots of gear, requires one to be physically fit, have good emotional stability, and a high level of mental awareness. Being overly fatigued means you lose some of all three, and that can make for an unsafe trip. It's all about having fun and coming home in one piece! So, you made the right call. Also, you have the most beautiful smile in the world. It just makes my day. Much love to our sister Canada from the USA!!

    Ms. Kaptein, before my birth my parents spent a couple of years at RCAF Station Holberg, at the north end of the Vancouver Island. My Dad was a Vancouver native; he served as an RCAF F-86 pilot during the Cold War. He was grounded for medical reasons and finished his RCAF hitch on the Pine Tree line. Prior to that stint in Holberg Dad did some training at the USAF airbase in Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. My folks fell in love with AZ; I was born and raised there. I've never been to Vancouver Island; I've known it only from my parents' stories. I enjoy Vancouver and BC vicariously through your videos, and this video series was a *real* treat. I hope you'll hit the north end of the island next time around. Who knows, maybe I'll grow a wild hair and motor up someday myself on the ol' DR!
    BTW, Dad's watchword for any campsite was always, "Leave it better than you found it." The last thing we'd do at any campsite was police up any trash, and make some small improvement - collect some firewood, enhance the fire ring, improve drainage at a tent site, whatever. I've found that to be a pretty good rule for life in general. Leave it better than you found it!
    Be safe, have fun, and thanks again for your videos! :-)

      @MeganKaptein  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and sharing your comment, Tracy. Your parents sound like fine folks with good tastes in environments (I'm a big fan of AZ as well.)
      I rode from Port Hardy on another trip and it was a really beautiful. I would certainly love to go back and explore sometime in the future. Your DR sounds like the perfect machine for it--maybe I'll see you there? 😊

    Hey Megan. Magic scenery, even if the chosen road was blocked off. As for hungry bears, we don't have that problem in Australia. However, when you come to Oz you'll need to learn to avoid kangaroos which like to skip across the road in front of you !

    • @rhonda-my_honda_cb500x3
      @rhonda-my_honda_cb500x3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only 'bear's in Australia are the eucalaptus-sedated 'drop bears' (koalas) :-) . My Canberra-based sister said Dawn and dusk are the most dangerous times for that 'roo behaviour. Buggerofit is, it's too frckn hot (40 degrees plus! No thank you!!) to ride during the day in Oz between November and March. And night-time's no better 'cos then you've got wombats (sentient moving roadblocks that will destroy cars, badly bend bull-bar kitted ute/pickups, and kill motorcyclists upon impact :-o ) . Megan is acutely mindful of this sort of thing, 'cos reindeer do the same malarkey in BC. She has personal vidclip evidence from her other summer trip around Shuswap/Okanagan Lakes this year!

      I really enjoy your videos and the stunning scenery British Columbia offers. This is in stark contrast to the arid desert environ of Australia.
      Please believe me when I tell you Australia is really not that dangerous.
      Despite what you've heard from friends.
      Yes, we have some of the world's most dangerous creatures (crocodiles, sharks, snakes, spiders, etc ) but they are rarely encountered.
      In fact, I could count on one hand the number I have seen.
      As an adult migrant, with the opportunity to choose between Canada and Australia, despite my mother being a Canuk, I selected Australia because of the warm climate. In the 50 years I have lived in Oz I have rearly seen a dangerous creature.
      I implore you to not let exagerated tales of eucalyptus sedated koalas, our wombats, or our kangaroos trying to take you off your bike at dawn and dusk, from putting you off visiting our magnificent land.
      The Ulysses Club ( www.ulysses.org.au ) is a social club for 'old' motorcyclists (ie over age 40). In (many) years to come you'll be eligible !
      With 15 international Branches, around the world, there is the opportunity for you to spearhead a new Canadian Branch.
      May I take the opportunity of wishing you and your loved ones a very happy and safe Christmas.

    There’s nothing wrong with cutting the trip a little short if you were getting tired and not really feeling it anymore. Like you said, this is for fun, you’re not a martyr. Each individual has their own personal way of enjoying a trip. Some enjoy pushing themselves harder than others. In the end, this was your trip and you had fun. Excellent video, looking forward to more!

      Alas, in these weird border-barricaded CoViD times, who else could the litterbug culprits be? It goes to show there is pig-ignorant callousness to greater or lesser degrees in all national identities :-(
      In New Zealand we call this 'Freedom" camping, and for the most part it is allowed here, except where explicitly signposted otherwise, which is usually around the 'touristy' hotspots.
      In summertimes past here, many spots have been spoiled and soiled by freedom campers, some of whom have left their literal cr@p behind in the outright publically accessible open, thus demonstrating their egregious entitlementalism that the local government and communties shall pick up their tab. The anecdotal impression has been that it's been overseas 20-somethings UK/Europeans doing their OE on the cheap & nasty in hired camper-vans who've been the guilty parties to such desecration.
      With NZ's borders still fully shut tight to all overseas tourism, it''ll be interesting to see how much of a problem is caused by freedom campers this coming summer who can (by obvious elimination) only be NZers.

    Thanks Megan. That was a terrific series you just finished with this video. I'm glad you headed home for a rest when your body told you it was time. I can't imagine being in a tent trying to sleep and hearing something breathing outside. It's horrible that someone would leave raw meat just laying around, and really dangerous for campers too with all the wildlife here in Canada. Please stay safe my friend!!
    Here we are deep into the rainy and cold season in Vancouver, so any rides for me will be short ones to keep fresh gas in the carbs and some charge in the battery. I hope for some longer rides when the weather gets better, but am too chicken to use a tent. There has to be some cheapish motels out there where I can sleep better and still not break the bank. I really really hope I can do a southern Ontario trip to visit family next summer, but that's yet to be seen.

    • @MeganKaptein
      @MeganKaptein  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tim, it was certainly an unnerving experience. Covid has been a game changer for hotels/motels locally during the summer. It seemed like everybody wanted to get away and almost all of the campsites and accommodation on the island were fully booked while I was there. Some advance planning might mitigate that risk in your case...

    • @johnbiskup2130
      @johnbiskup2130 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pepper spray is considered a prohibited weapon in Canada (can't say I agree with it). Bear spray which is essentially the same thing is not but you must have a justifiable reason to possess it. In her case, yes, she can have it for bears because there are bears there.

    • @woxiduswoxidus1167
      @woxiduswoxidus1167 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      General issue -How do you imagine usage of a pepper spray? could you stop a running train if you have spray in your hand? when you see and 180-360 kg (400-790 lb) grizzly running in to you at 50 km/h (40miles/h) speed...Also remains possibility to hit the bear crossing the road in bear area....
