Can’t actually see what you’re pruning. You had a couple of close shots but everything else from afar. The background blends in so can’t see what you’re doing!
I only prune gooseberries from year 5 onward, unless branches are damaged or hanging too low, I get tons of berries, the bushes are about 5-6ft around, I dont worry about the open vase shape too much either as I grow gooseberries that are resistant to Mildew and fungal infections, Hinnonmäki red and Captivator are the best.
I’m in Tennessee (US) and I just moved on to a 5 ac plot of heavily wooded land. As I was clearing the trees I came across about a dozen tall, older gooseberry plants. Average height is about 12’-15’ tall. I want to prune them way down so they might be productive again. Any pointers for an old growth bush?
We have videos coming through for most Fruit Andrew, and plenty of episodes to look back on. go to the play lists and it will make it easier for you to find things you require.
Thank you - I have blueberries, red currants, grapes and those are just the new ones, along with the gooseberries. Then there's the raspberries and blackberries, to say nothing about the stuff I'm planning to grow in the future.
I transferred cuttings from my fruit bushes home at the end of last year so I don't have much pruning to do this time but I did have a gooseberry collapse before after not pruning it properly so it's important to get them done at this time of year. You're going to have plenty of gooseberries there Tony
True, but this is a SEVEN year old video, though the quality of the video for that time is excellent. I just found the channel, and I'm gonna subscribe to see what else he's accomplished! I just bought a red variety, developed in Finland, Hinnomäki Red, and I can't wait to grow and spread it! Everyone speaks so highly of the taste.
Hi Tony i really enjoy your videos and I am a novice gardener, so thank you for inspiring me. I have a substantial gooseberry bush in a garden we bought two years ago, it probably hasn’t been pruned for a few years, also a blackcurrant bush, how hard should I prune them? Thanks
Those are very useful pruning details and thank you. I ordered 9 colours of seed from India, probably a couple or so are currants. They shouldn't be bear attractants so should be plenty fun.
Your welcome Duncan Sorry for the late reply. A load of comments said they were responded to even though they were not. I am slowly working through them all.
watched this Saturday night :) just gave mine a light pruning this year as they have only been in the ground for a year. Gonna save this vid for next year though!
Great video, thanks! I just purchased gooseberry bushes and will plant them shortly. When should I start pruning them? Should I give them a couple of years to get established first?
Can I cut back now? I weeded earlier around my gooseberries but didn't look to closely at the bush. I think they will need a trim especially 1 damaged branch I did notice. Thanks 👍
can I grow 3 diffrent colours of Hinnomaki gooseberry green, red, yellow all will be bare root and have 3-5 shoots and put them together in a 30 litre pot or very close together in ground so the colours mix for nice colour effect ?
Hi Tony It’s me again. I have some gooseberry bushes. They have been left in a neglected corner of the garden for a couple of years. Today I have started to make a raised bed in an area we are going to use for soft fruit. RHS suggesting 3-4 feet spacing. If I adopted this spacing I will quickly run out of space. Is it possible to prune them right back and train them as cordons, or are cordons different root stocks. If they can be grown as cordons. Would it be best for rows to run north south and would rows for raspberries be the same. South facing garden Thanks
The bush varieties wont grow like cordons they would keep throwing major branches off because of the vigor. Id reduce the number of plants and prune them to fit. Run the lines east to west that way they will pick up the sun a lot of the day
I bought a black current plant and I'm in California. I would love to grow gooseberries . Can you plant them together or should that be avoided? Thank you for the video It's really helpful.
Hi Tony, does this need to be done in January or could it be done now (October)? They are first year plants and haven't produced any fruit as yet, well 1 actually!
There is no need for the bush to get bigger as you should be removing the old wood thats about 3-4 years old as this doesnt produce fruit. the older the bush the less fruit. so keep pruning so the bush is more vigorous

Very informative video. I have a bush that is at least 20 years old and never been pruned. I will take all your advice to prune it this year.
Nice, simple video. Very clear instructions without all the waffle of many other TH-camrs!! Many thanks.
You're welcome!
Brilliant! really helpful. Greetings from Canada
Thanks for sharing

Nice instructional video. Have a great day Tony
Useful to know for my gooseberry plants, as I'm new to growing them.

Thanks Laura, We always have great harvest of goosberries and the kids love them with icecream :)
Very helpful video, but a tripod to hold your camera, for CLOSE up shots of the actual pruning cuts, would be great.🌿
I agree and do use them most of the time but when this was filmed didn’t have it with me

remove a third of the bush no more
Interesting demonstration Tony! I have never grown gooseberries too hot for them here I think. Cheers mate :)
Check out trees of antiquity they have some gooseberries there that can grow in hotter areas

Great idea to save the video, Always use it as a reference. over the next week or so there will be plenty of pruning videos coming covering most fruit
can you do one on blueberries :)
I have one coming up. we have them coming on blackcurrant, blueberry, honeyberry, autumn raspberry
Great video, thanks! I just purchased gooseberry bushes and will plant them shortly. When should I start pruning them? Should I give them a couple of years to get established first?
Can the clipping be replanted to create a new bush?
Great useful tips Tony. If in doubt cut it out as the surgeon used to say
Patrick Meehan exactly Patrick 😁
Thank you.
You're welcome!

Not if they started budding
@@simplifygardening I think they were showing signs of life, I will leave them and do next year. Thanks for the reply.👍

Yes Tom grow them like Bonsai
Awesome update one i missed can you do that after they have fruited Tony
No Linda wait until all foliage has died back then you know all the sugars have gone back to the roots for next year. They need to be dormant
Ok thank you for that Tony
where to buy it to grow in my garden?
Ah, fantastic a Welsh grower. 😍
I miss Wales.
Goofy girl Hey Goofy girl. Thanks for such a great comment 😁👌
Fantastic video
Cheers John :) appreciate the comments
Hello Tony,
can you recommend an organicI spray to keep the dreaded saw fly at bay.
use vinegar epsom salt and small amount of liquid soap. but if your getting sawfly your better off creating more air flow as i discuss in this video

Don't think gooseberries are allowed in America because of disease problems that can occur
@@kioralaura3724 we are growing gooseberries in Ohio. You are just supposed to distance them from pine trees, I believe.
Thanks - Many Thanks!
Glad it was of interest :)

Once the plant is dormant Ali
That's something i need to do prune my gooseberry bushes, No dough i will be cut to ribbons lol
Take your time Mark. get them done and its easier each year then
You mentioned 'training' the shoots. Do you mean that you do this through the pruning, or do you mean that you actually back shoots?
Through pruning, If you prune correctly you train the bush to grow in the direction you need
IMHO: ...The best insect "preventative", is to have many "Warblers", and other insect eating birds, on or near the property!!!!
Yes I agree and the reason i have a pond to attract them in
Can you buy the goosberry seeds from indonesia
I am not sure
Way
There is no branch that doesn't cross in my bush 😂 . Some branches grow even downwards, I don't know why
Prune them out and then they plant will throw upwards its too congested if they are going down its about light penetration

Hey Welcome Arifin :)
What I’ve never understood about pruning (such as soft fruit bushes) …is if you keep pruning how is the bush ever going to get bigger?
There is no need for the bush to get bigger as you should be removing the old wood thats about 3-4 years old as this doesnt produce fruit. the older the bush the less fruit. so keep pruning so the bush is more vigorous
Thanks for that …as I have been removing the green new shoots and leaving the mature old wood
