    I just went back and edited some of the keywords, descriptions and categories on some of my older photos in an effort to improve the odds of getting my photos downloaded more often. Applying keywords and captions is a skill like anything else, so now that I do a better job of figuring out what phrases people use to find photos, I'm hoping that these edits will help improve sales.

    I try to answer the who, what, when and where in my captions. I use that info to come up with keywords. Then I look at the suggested keywords and use the appropriate ones. Then I’ll use the “find more keywords” tool. I’ll also search on Shutterstock for a similar image. If I find very little images, sometimes it’s a matter of changing my search string, which has a direct bearing on my caption and keywords. Then I’ll look at the top results to see if I can glean any good keywords or concepts from those images.

    A photo professionnal, talented retoucher, told me I should upload my work... some two years ago.
    And it happens that I've never done it, as of now. But the thing came back in my "train of toughts", so l'm starting to consider doing something out of these thousands of images/sequences I now have.
    Your work about this particular topic should come as helpful. I'm like too many... good "image maker" (been told several times and former free-lance pro, so...), but wayyyyyy bad at advocating my own skills. But it's never too late to improve... or is it ?
    Your work here is of great value, and I'm only one among hundreds to say so. Thank you. 🙏🏽

  • @tonywoodhouse6988
    @tonywoodhouse6988 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Nicole, I asked this before, on your other keywording video and I thought it might be relevant here too. If you use a long title, you will be using many of the keywords you might use again in your available 50 keywords. Is it necessary to repeat them in the keywords, thus saving you some words. I know you don't know how the algorithm works, but I thought it might be something for us all to consider.

    • @dazzlingdeb8427
      @dazzlingdeb8427 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tony Woodhouse I repeat them. If you end up with more than 50 keywords, then take out the less important repeated keywords because they will be still be used in a search.

    • @NicoleGlass
      @NicoleGlass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the very bottom of your contributor panel it will say "top performers". Click on "view top performers" and you'll see the keyword search terms there. Or you can go into your catalogue manager, click on a set and "view set stats".

    • @MarianPierreLouis
      @MarianPierreLouis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NicoleGlass Thanks Nicole. I wonder if this is a feature that is activated once a certain amount of photos are sold. I don't see the search terms in either of those locations. I've only sold 4 photos so maybe it is too soon.

    • @NicoleGlass
      @NicoleGlass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarianPierreLouis Ah yes. 4 photos is not a lot to analyze. Perhaps those 4 photos were found in a different way, like under "similar images" underneath different photos. Thus, no keyword info.

  • @amf1435

    I have a question... Do photos move (in relation of page they appear on) with number of clicks they get? I don't mean sales, simply with how many people look at them. I noticed some of my and other people's pictures appearing on the first or second page of search results, despite being uploaded like 2 days ago and having zero sales so far. I am searching only by location's name and am getting close to 4 000 results.

    • @NicoleGlass

    I am curious Nicole, have you ever figured out the amount of time you spend on stock photography in relation to what you earn with it? I would like to know the revenue to time spent ratio. I suppose your TH-cam income would apply to that as stock photography is your channel focus. I am not trying to be nosey and ask what you make but more along the lines of I traded this many hours of my time in total for this amount of money over the course of a year and that equates to x amount of dollars per hour. You have probably never kept track of this but maybe that's a good experiment for the coming year. Just to keep track of things for a year. Time spent vs. dollars earned.

    • @NicoleGlass
      @NicoleGlass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robbie, yeah I actually did make the calculation once. For photos it’s about $75/hour and video is higher. But this differs depending on how efficient and fast someone is with keywording and such, as well as the type of photos they upload. (Not counting YT revenue here). What’s your rate?

    • @teleking58
      @teleking58 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NicoleGlass I would happily give you my rate but I have never done anything with stock photography. I have been considering starting into stock but I worry about spending a ton of time for little return. I have shot wildlife/nature and concerts for ages. Tough to make money with either. I have been learning portrait photography and lighting because I thought it may be a way to increase my income but stock is always at the back of my mind. I'm subbed to your channel because of your focus on it.

    I live in Southern California, so we don’t have four seasons. Photos I take in the winter often look like I took them in the summer. SS often suggests “summer” for my landscapes, even though I took them in other seasons. Should I keyword the image as “summer” or should I keyword it as the actual season that I took it in? Also, if I have to submit the landscape as editorial because there’s a visible logo on a building and I took the landscape in February, should I use the keyword, “winter” or “summer,” or both? Believe me, the sky and sea are as blue as can be. This particular image looks like summer.

    • @NicoleGlass
      @NicoleGlass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question and not sure I have the answer for it. Maybe you could experiment with that and see what works better. For commercial photos, perhaps try using the season that most accurately reflects what the image looks like. For editorial, accuracy is probably better. But again, take this with a grain of salt: I have not researched this.

    Moot point for keywords on Shutterstock, they've been rejecting my keywords, which I believe are creative and strategic. They are forcing me to dumb them down to being very generic, like: graphic, design, art, holiday....so on and so forth. Generic is fine to a point, but to fill up the complete 50, one has to think outside the box, and they are not allowing me to do so.

      @@NicoleGlass Yes, I'd like to think so. It was a photograph of a painting on canvas I did honoring Black History Month. I used keywords that would be associated with a search on the subject such as famous key figures of civil rights and black history: George Washington Carver, Martin Luther King, Jr., also emancipation proclamation, ending of slavery, equal rights... Interestingly, it hasn't been accepted yet, my newest rendition of keywords are completely dumbed down and generic, and only about 30. Which is very disappointing due to the work put into the painting, and killing my creative keyword strategy...I really thought I was knocking it out of the park!!!
