  • How can you find newsworthy editorial stock photo ideas that are trending and will actually make you money? In this video, I talk about a few different ways that I search for trending news topics worth shooting. By doing this, you can increase your earnings on Shutterstock and any other stock photography platform that accepts editorial images. #stockphotography #passiveincome #photojournalism

This video was about EDITORIAL photos, which require no release forms. If you're confused, watch this video: th-cam.com/video/WyWvDNDB3pg/w-d-xo.html

I am not a fan of your new sound. I unsubscribed from Gillian Perkins because of her harsh sound.
What do the professionals use on US TV? In Australia, on the ABC they use lav microphones. To my mind, the closer your microphone is to your mouth, the less ambient (and echos) you will record and the better control you have over the final sound.. On The Drub, and ABC programs, when they crew went outside to record, they had head-mounted microphones right next to their mouths, it completely eliminated street noise. I think they should have added some back in,

Nicole, as a rough estimate. What is the % of editorial to commercial photo's you have on shutterstock? Oh, and the new sound was a bit tinny - try playing with the equalizer and get a bit more base. However, another great video.

Try to equalize your vocals track. It sounds too sharp, and there is a hiss sound whenever at the hard consonants in your speech. I think the mic is ok, but the vocal track should be edited more. Do you connect the mic to a preamp, or is it directly connected to your camera? It's a good idea to use a preamp and wear a headset while speaking into the mic.

Cool video! But I had to laugh (really, I laughed out loud :) ) . It struck me as funny for some reason when I saw you doing a "box opening" video! Don't get me wrong, it was very cool, well done, etc (actually I paused it to type this, so I haven't finished it yet LOL) - it just seemed so different from what I normally expect from you! And yes, that's a good thing ;-)
p.s. - I guess really the reason I laughed is...here's a quick story - I have a friend that has a TH-cam channel, she only does box opening videos, like fashion stuff, whatever...and they are (cheesy) interesting to say the least...and of course all the others on YT doing box opening videos...I told my friends "Don't worry, I won't be doing box opening videos. I want to do tutorials and other interesting things - like Nicole Glass does!" (this was just yesterday haha) THEN I saw your video just now. The irony struck me as funny. Please don't take this as criticism in any way. It just made me laugh!! Thanks!
p.p.s. I was in Siena, Italy, 2 weeks ago, got "caught" in the middle of a huge global warming student protest. Took lots of pics, video, thought of Nicole Glass! Will be uploading these. Yay!

All of the audio police are coming out of the woodwork giving their unprofessional opinions about your mike. Compared to previous videos it's a 100% improvement! There is much less echo now.
    Oh, on another note...
My evil master plan for more sales on Shutterstock:
Take many pictures of stores, then rob each and every one of them. They're bound to be in the news then! (Maybe me too if I'm unlucky). Hmm.... maybe I can earn enough from them to post bail?

Love your very informative videos! I have a question for you, and perhaps you have already addressed this in previous video; How do you keep the thousands of photos and videos you have gathered and uploaded to various sites, organized? I'm just getting started and have thousands of photos to sort through and organizing these is driving me NUTS!

    • @NicoleGlass

I have soo many hard drives and on each hard drive I have folders - year - month - category. After editing my photos in Lightroom I export them to a giant folder called “stock”. I have many stock folders at this point from many years and honestly they’re a bit of a mess. But if I wanted to find the original photos I can always go back to the month of the year and find them that way. Organization is a never ending work in progress.

I have a question on Model Release. I sent a question to a stock photo agency. In a photo taken near a river or a tourist place, there are many people visible in the photo. I got response from stock photo agencies that a Model Release is required for each and every person.

Do you think that events that happen in a town of Sicily could sell as much to pay the work to do it? I live in Catania (Sicily, Italy). The only editorial pics I sells are from the Saint Agatha religious fest in February, but very little considering the time to exit, shoot, edit and keyword the pictures. I try to make mainstream pictures because I suppose that editorial could not sell if you’re not living in a big American city or you does not have big events such as international or olimpic games. However in the months before the Saint Agatha fest I sell few pictures about the city, culinary speciality and monuments. Nothing that makes me rich, but I hope this will happen in the next years so it could have a sense.

I tried to upload photos of a leading UK politician speaking at a public rally to Shutterstock. The quality was good, I used the correct keywords, I put it in the editorial category - but it was rejected because they said they no longer accepted this kind of image. I asked Support to explain but they just kept giving me links to their guidelines and NOWHERE does it explain why they no longer accept certain subjects. I don't know if anyone outside the UK is aware, but we're going through the most turbulent political period for centuries at the moment and there are lots of news items about this politician. There are also about a dozen other similar photos available of him speaking at a rally. I'm just so puzzled why mine was rejected.

Just an idea, maybe a video on having a crack at shooting something in a saturated category of stock images. A lot of your followers would be hobby shooters as opposed to professionals and as much as saturated categories are no good for making money, if you can crack sales in a saturated market it is a good key indication that your skills have been lifted to a point that stock photography is actually a viable way of making money. 🙂

@@NicoleGlass In a village near Stratford upon Avon, England. In 1919 there was a big rally of 2000 farmworkers outside the local pub and the BBC filmed a re-enactment for which a dozen locals raided the dressing-up box and my pal, a retired preacher, did a great job as the main speaker. I got exclusive access to photo the film crew at work, my sideshow on TH-cam th-cam.com/video/Sa2P9OQeo28/w-d-xo.html had 569 views but don't feel too bad. Let's see Washington compete with that sort of action!

How you keyword and descript editorials? Still with a date and place? Also when you would take a picture of a car? Thksfor all the good videos and knd regads from switzerland 🙋🏽‍♀️

Claudine Weber-Hilty When you click the “editorial” button, Shutterstock tells you exactly the format you must use: city, state, country, date. But. Be careful to use that exact format and punctuation that Shutterstock tells you to use.
Keywords are essential, so use your 50 keywords. I tend to think Big Picture (categories) first, then details, then somewhere in that, I include location, then smaller details..
Keywording editorial and commercial stock are the same. If you upload an illustrative editorial image, you must include the keyword, “illustrative editorial.” See Nicole’s video on illustrative editorial images.
I stay away uploading pics of cars. If they’re on a street and my picture is of a building, it’s ok. But I don’t want license plates showing.
Nicole was talking about newly released cars.

Interesting video. My thoughts on your new sound from the mike is that it is a bit too deadened if that makes sense. Like you are in a very small room with padding on all the walls and ceiling.

Do you need property releases for photos such as your Massage Envy photo? Or do you just list them as Editorial?
