To all that commented on my comment, I did cut things a bit short by mentioning just "Blue". With Joni were do you start and where end when defining her creative genius? For the record in my humble opinion Clouds and Ladies of the Canyon are also masterpieces.
However, I believe in "Blue", Joni opened up so much she laid herself bare, the scars, the blemishes, the beauty all of it was laid wide open. I believe in "Blue" she shares more of herself than every before..

This song means more to be now at 63 years old than it did when I first heard it at 17 years old in the 70s. Then there's the movie Love Actually where Joni sings this in the movie at her older age with the deep raspy voice from year's of smoking and the song’s rousing embodiment of loss, heartbreak and reflection come crashing into the frame as Thompson delivers a devastating acting masterclass. This song is timeless ❤️ Brings me to tears everytime 😪

The single was in the top ten in the USA, and won a Grammy in 1969 for Best Folk Performance. Judy also has a magnificent voice. I agree with other posts below -- You MUST watch/listen to 80-year-old Joni Mitchell's performance of Both Sides Now at the 2024 Grammys. Her voice is VERY different now, and not just because of age, but also because she has spent a number of years recovering from a burst aneurysm in her brain. She had to learn how to speak, walk, and sing all over again. So to see and hear her bring her years and wisdom and experience and clear-sighted perspective to a song she wrote and first recorded at age 23 is just such an amazing PRIVILEGE. Joni is by all accounts one of the top (female) artists of the 20th (and 21st) century. Almost every singer/songwriter since comes from her. She has so many great songs but you guys should try her jazz period. She played with the best players like Wayne Shorter (sax), Jaco Pastorius (bass), etc. Would recommend “Coyote “, “Amelia”.,”Hejira”.
PS. I love Kate Bush as well. She was just voted into the R&R Hall of Fame!! Tell Jay to try “Love and Anger” with guest guitarist David Gilmore from Pink Floyd who actually “discovered “ Kate and helped her get her first contract. I guarantee he’ll become a fan.

I HIGHLY recommend listening to her 2000's version and comparing them.
Even the album art is amazing to compare as they compliment the songs. The song from the '70s has innocence, energy, and the optimism of youth compared to maturity, pain, and regret of a life lived in the later version.

One guitar a voice and a great song. We had rockin' stuff too, but we knew how to listen - no cell phones. That's all we needed back in the day, listening to our poets as we explored life together, as they expressed our shared experiences. We had no internet; this was our medium, how we communicated our experiences, hopes and dreams and aspirations. We still have music, but to old dude me it seems we've lost a lot. Sorry, for sounding like my father.

It's a song that hits differently at different stages in one's life. Jay and Amber, I'd be really curious to see your reactions to more of Joni's extensive catalog, especially when she moves into more experimental and jazzy sounds with albums like _Don Juan's Reckless Daughter_ , _Mingus_ , _Hejira_ , and _The Hissing of Summer Lawns_ . Joni has influenced many many artists and they in turn have influenced many many artists. The list has to be in the hundreds.
Joni started out in Saskatoon, Canada. The city is depicted on this album cover. The Red Lilly being the provincial flower.
I went to the same high school that Joni did, although 30 years later. She stopped in one day, while I was in high school, met with some students. Dropped off an autographed photo of herself for the foyer.
