I worked so hard to get into my "dream school" and after I got rejected, I realized that it's not that serious. The pressure my parents put on me was honestly deteriorating my mental health. Take care of yourself guys.

The timing of me seeing this video is perfect. I have been stressing so much about college name and the "prestige" of the school I go to. It is hard to shake off the feeling of lower self-worth or value based on the acceptance rate of a school. We are obsessed with validation in American culture, which contributes to this unhealthy mentality. Acceptance rates can make you think you're better than everyone else or on the contrary, it makes you feel as if your admittance isn't even an accomplishment.

Yeah the whole system is just a mess right now it seems. I just finally had to accept my college future and focus on how I could make it work for my life! This topic is endless and it effects so many of us now.

My son just found he didn't get into his dream school and he's crushed. I told him that that college just wasn't meant to be and you're not supposed to be there now. So look for the college you're supposed to attend and go for it. The moral of the story is expecting something and it not going through is the biggest problem. Don't expect things to go your way all the time and just do your best.

I appreciate this. As a mom of a very intelligent young man who is choosing to get his AA here and the transfer to a 4-year school, I agree with you 100%. The pressure put on kids these days is ridiculous. My son is highly intelligent and could probably get into an ivy if he wanted to. But the more I hear about how ridiculously pressure-filled they are, I question as to why anyone would even WANT to put themselves through that.

Thank you so much for making this type of content! I feel like people online or in real life don’t talk abt this enough especially for “high achieving” students. I feel like a lot of people know and is completely aware of how messed up the college application process is, but just go with societal standards. Like I probably know that I won’t get accepted to a certain school, and it’s not that I’m not good enough but instead not the right fit, or not having the right background whatever. But I’d still get very upset afterwards, and beat myself up for it. Just like what u were saying, when you’re in it, u kinda just sink in to that type of environment with those types noises from yourself people around, etc. It’s mid April now, I really needed this different perspective to kinda pulling me a step back.

I was going through my first mental breakdown over a single C on my transcript and, after I finally calmed down, I reminded myself that going to college in itself is a huge accomplishment and I will live my life knowing that I'll probably never worry about food on the table or anything else financially related (this vid would've probably helped a bunch then haha)
Sometimes we get so blind with the idea of success when the truth is that there will ALWAYS be grass that's greener. If we tried our best, that should be a measurement of how satisfied we are

I wish I had this video when I was in high school(even middle school). Colleges do brand themselves. And at the end of the day, you get a degree to ,hopefully, get a step closer to what God is calling you to do, not makes your parents or others happy. And it is a huge privilege to go to college that we take for granted. It''s also not the only way to be a financially stable , self actualized person. There's also trade schools. You don't want to leave college with debt. It's not a bad thing if you start out at community college. I heard somewhere that passion is something you get after YEARS of doing a job. You can't really be passionate about something in like law, if you've never practiced it.

Thank you for making this video!! Im a senior in college and in my own experience my family was very poor and neither of my parents went to college. Therefore, I and many other poor kids I know saw college as a way for economic mobility. I think this is what college has become obviously, and why kids are so stressed about it, about why I was stressed about it. Ya prestige and how you look matters for sure, but the increase in applicants to T20 schools is not solely because they want to seem more prestigious. Its because college is seen as a way to the middle and upper classes. However, T20 schools as well as most other schools were not built to be as such, frankly especially the ivy league, were institutions built to maintain the separation of the educated upper classes from the poorer classes. And now that society has changed so much, these institution’s rates r so low bc more people r applying then what the colleges can handle. We’ve been sold this idea that college is a way up, but, and this is now a offshoot of what u were talking about, its increasingly not. Yes places like Yale and Harvard have so many resources and connections to get you to high places, but going to a state school or a small liberal arts college can be just as fulfilling! Also, I think its important to take into account that in an increasingly unequal political economic system like the US, college is increasingly becoming a lie, a way to line the pockets of university boards’ high salaries and the industry of college admissions and higher ed. We have to not only question what we really want, but also the system and cultural ideals that made us feel like we couldnt.

What you have said is true. Your area is very academically oriented and competitive. But you should pick the school you think you will be happy attending a have the opportunity to study what you desire.

I'm from South Africa and really want to go to UCT because it's my dream university but I my depression only progressively got worse during my school years and for whatever reason I struggled to even achieve a Bachelor's pass for my matric rewrites during the 2 gap years I took after matriculation in 2020. Now I'm studying a law degree I'd never seen myself studying at an overpriced private institution known as Varsity College and I just want to transfer to a university but that will mean only transferring in my 3rd year if I apply next year. I completed a Higher Certificate on Legal Studied in order to get into the undergraduate Bachelor of Laws programme at this college but I didn't even achieve a 65% GPA for the Higher Certificate or even my 1st year in the degree so I just feel my hope of actually being accepted at my dream university dwindling. It socks even more because I'm 22 and I have a really smart cousin who achieves 80s and 90s at the same school I went to and she's currently in Grade 11 but I know she wants to go to the same dream university and I know she'll definitely get accepted to anywhere she applies. I don't know why but I just never even knew that we had to apply to universities with our grade 11 marks so I didnt even try that hard. And in grade 12 I just struggled mahn. I really don't want to feel jealous over all of my cousin's new experiences at my dream university but yoh the fact that my life choices feels like it's all crashing on me now. I would have really lived the experience to be at my dream uni but it's all so competitive, i feel like even if I try my best at 2nd year at college now or even re-do my matric results it still won't be enough to get in and that just sucks because I'm willing to study the hardest I've ever had if I were to get in. It feel like I've been doomed form the start but it was my own ignorance that got me here and now there's no fixing it

I agree with you that some people are so fixated on the statics and name of a university. I will hold my hand up and say when looking for a university I take them into consideration, because I wonder how it may look on my CV/resume. Personally I think employers should change their requests and it will ease this fixation. I am not sure about it in America, but here in the UK I have seen jobs specify that they would like people from a high ranking university. End of the day as you said everyone has the university that suits their needs, I believe there is no university that will do it all for you but hey haha.
Also when I saw the thumbnail, I thought I was about to get told off for watching university reaction videos haha

Hi! Thanks for this video, it helped a lot...
A little back story here, Im 14 and i didnt get to my dream high school this year bcs the government basically banned students from another province to get into that school. It's the number 1 hs in my entire country for several years and i got enough score to apply (my jhs is no 2 in the country). I actually dont mind, it's not the end of the world. Except for the fact that it is, bcs everyone told me not to do anything but to focus on getting to that school for the entire year of my jhs (3 years). And that rule was new, just this year. No one expected that school to just accept students from that province alone bcs usually they accepted students from the entire country with only 88 seats per year, it's a boarding school, and it's free (just gonna be oaying for the boarding). It caught me off guard. Idk what to do. I left everything just to get to this school and the government with its stupid rule just broke everything apart. Idek what im feeling rn. Im so overwhelmed by the sadness but everyone was just like "oh okay, too bad." They dont seem like they give a damn. Idk what to feel, it's so confusing....
But well, i do understand that there are still other schools. Even tho none of it are as good, free, or the facility arent as much, I'll settle and quickly adaptate with anything. Again, it's not the end of the world. I still have the world to explore. This will be an experience that taught me to have backup plans.... and not hope too much.
Anw thanks for reading this far, but dont mind me, im just ranting in the most random platform possible where no one knows me.... And pls remember that this isnt your problem so it's okay if you just ignore it, i dont wanna make you feel bad or anything😙

I didnt get acceptet in my dream gymnasium, where i have to study the first language that i want, which was german, and my second was englisch. And i did great job in my exams, but i made a only one mistake that cost me so much, because i know the right answer and i did the right thing, but i was not sure that i was right and didnt right it on the list. So for me this is so hard to acceptet, not only for the school, but for people right there in my school, that i have to be now. And this school is one of the best in my country, but i wohnt study the language that i want like first, and i am so upset, because where i live the second language it cant be learnt at school and you have to study on your own. I am sorry thet this is so long, i just wantet to tell that, because i am very sad about it.
