Skateboarding has went to levels I thought I'd never see
I remember how amazed I was the first time I saw someone do a kickflip in a street part. My mind was blown, it looked like magic. I could never have imagined what skating would look like 35 years later

this is what can happen when you live in a culture that supports and cheers on one another's success instead of trying to step on and destroy the competition.
I'm not saying this kid's not insanely talented but when you look at the sheer, otherworldly skill that comes out of both Brasil and Japan.... there is a common bond.

While watching this, I had another YT tab watching pair BBoy (breakin') battle on Red Bull competition video, even though, the Japanese pair didn't pass the semi. I just got this feeling, next year's Olympics, the Japanese is going doing really well with the two new sports of skateboarding and breaking. The sad part is that these two sub cultures were created by us, one from the West and the other from the East Coast. Like what you mentioned about having a culture that supports, an interview with Crazy Legs, one of the founder of Rocksteady Crew mentioned recently that it has been hard to get sponsorship/fundings to the amateur athletes that are repping Team USA as BBoys in Olympics since as a "sport" it's very niche which ironically as Hip Hop culture is mainstream but mainly rapping (the music part) or street wears (Pharell as head of Louis Vouiton).

It use to be that skateboarders were defined by their preference of what they skated e.g. street, tech, vert, bowl, big rails/ stairs/ gaps, etc
Now the lines are so blurred - you get 12 year olds, do switch tricks down hand stairs/ handrails for a tik a 30 second tok/ instagram post.
I remember watching a kickflip front board down like a 10 stair from 3 different angles and then in slow mo about 20 years ago lol
