My family took a summer camping trip the Hat Creek every year as a kid. Have a lot of good memories fishing all day and climbing the cinder cones. Had my first run in with a rattler taking a shortcuts from the trail. Lesson learned. Stay on the trail. Thanks for bringing back great memories.
Hearing that rattler sound off when you are breaking through brush off trail is always a heart stopping moment! That's why I mostly try to fish rivers when it's freezing cold these days.
@wildernesswithamani1027 for sure. I guarantee that was the closest any human ever looked like a meerkat. Just wish I had been able to keep those lightning reflexes as I aged.

Amani- Rick here from Idaho. The spots are called Blackspot Disease or Neascus trematode. It’s not fatal to fish but it’s from a parasite that the fish has. It’s prevalent in Idahos Teton River and Henry’s Fork. You can look it up for more info. You had an awesome day of fishing!! Rick
Right on. Thanks for the info. The fish seemed to be strong but that issue was pretty obvious. I saw another one swimming around that had a larger spot like that covering a lot of the top of it's head. Probably contagious. Not sure. I'm just learning what it is from you.
If the spot disease has been around since at least 2010, the good news is that the fish appear healthy! As far as the fungus fish- it may have banged its head, open wound when the water was warmer and now it won’t heal. Or maybe it might?
Im from Shingletown (Viola) just west of Old Station there. Ppl go there for big brookies mostly. My biggest brookie was just downstream of that. Les Claypool camps there a lot in his airstream trailer. Primus guy

Youre going up the Pit? Sorry commenting as I watch. Youre probably heading to around Pit 2 or 1 around Burney or Fall River but my favorite fishing ever is Pit7 just below the Pit7 dam in Montgomery Creek, off Fenders Ferry Rd. Anywhere near or upstream of the spillway. Its insane.
I went and looked at it and it was really high and fairly stained so I went home instead. I was hoping the flow would be lower than it was when I fished it for my first Pit River video on my river fishing playlist but that wasn't the case. It all worked out because I got an even bigger brown, well over 20", than I got in this video the next day fishing the middle fork of the feather river for my Patreon. It all came together. If you aren't a Wilderness with Amani on Patreon subscriber that big brown will be on my next highlight clip so you can see what it looked like then.

My fishing tips playlist has details on a lot of the tackle I use from lures down to the hooks for bait fishing.
I need to get back up there and see more river. I went over to the Pit nearby to scout it for the next day and it was swollen and stained. Killed my overnight plans. Oh. well, I got a big Feather River brown over 20" the next day fishing for my Patreon so it all worked out.
I don't know. Just a long handle rubber net I got at Walmart. I have a clip where I talk about it on my outdoor safety and products I use playlist. In a lot of the river fishing videos I have on my river fishing playlist a long handle net is really the best option because I am often not close enough to the water to reach down with a shorter net and scoop up the fish easily.
Fish are super spooky. I'd faintly see a fish in the middle of the river and it would dart off before I could even get a cast off and I have really good long distance range using 1/8 Oz jigs on my 5' ultralight. That was not an easy section to fish from shore.
