Spring Creek & small stream fly fishing for brown trout is one of the hilights of trout stream anglers. Stalking rising and cruising brown trout takes on a whole new level of fly fishing in trout streams. Add overhead cover like heavy bushes on heavy in-stream weedlines of spring creeks and the engagement is intense and intimate. In this video we hunt brown trout in 2 spring creeks. We have fun stalking brown tout in heavy weed cover in the spring creeks.

I'm a Japanese living in Japan, and I love mountain stream fishing. Your fishing field is calm and full of nature. When I see the beautiful scenery that makes me forget the flow, I feel like I want to leave my body to nature and fish slowly.
Thanks for sharing this. It's wonderful and deeply affecting how our experiences on the water make us all feel.
Through the years we've sure been shown by "nature" just how slow we need to go with our fishing.
I never fail to be blown away by the footage you two get. As an entomologist I also love the coverage of local wildlife as well.
We have visited some incredible spots and found some great opportunities to capture nature at its best. We truly love it and are inspired by it! This day was no exception!
I'm currently stuck at home recovering from surgery after fracturing my tibial plateau and seeing you guys fish where I grew up and cut my teeth has brightened my day. Those little creeks are my favorite little place on this planet. I spent hours on those creeks as a teenager, hooking every wire, floating weed and branch imaginable. They taught me about humility ,timing and patience. Very difficult, intimate little creeks with some very large trout
And an amazing childhood it would have been a few decades back before us tourists and the agriculture industry ran that country over! Just wonderful memories of rural life in a spectacular region of the S Island, hope it brought you back to standing in those waters. It was really interesting talking to the original kand owner that broke the hummocks into that valley finally just last year. Now long retired and living in town it was neat to happen chance meet up and talk of how it opened up, the 'just married' text on the old original house he grew up in, married in, etc. Wonderful life through there 😊❤️
@jensenflyfishing sounds like you met Brian. I lived in that house in the early 90s believe it or not. Mum and dad had no money and rented that place from him while trying to make a go at farming. The message atop the roof could be about my parents actually. I still live in the valley and work the family farm. Those are our heifers in the background over the boundary fence in front of the pine trees. There's just something special about those silent spring creeks.
@@shafffisher yes! I think he mentioned the just married was for he and his wife. He was raised in that house by my memory and then they lived there upon being married. The whole setting is just the definition of fly fishing romance. We began poking about only back in 2005 or so in our second trip to NZ. That must have been something growing up in there. Love that back road to the coast too (deliberately coy here to not give onlookers exact location). So much life, so many time-lapse clouds thanks to that coastal influence. Man. Here's hoping you have a speedy and comfortable recovery. ❤️
My brother and I have just finished sharing in this incredible and masterful piece of art! At the risk of saying something that might be somewhat off putting, we must say that many of your works have been a spiritual experience for us. The combination of photography choices of music and dialogue are wonderful and trigger in us a deep and profound appreciation and expansive wonder of the pure mystery and magic which is this planet. So incredible that we find ourselves in the deep of space on this sacred and beautiful planet, a garden, and eden which is glorious beyond words to describe.
Your works of art and your spirits in the midst are a true gift of life to this world.
Thank you so very much from us both for what you are bringing into this world at this time!
Thank you for taking the time to reply with such a kind reply. We appreciate hearing feedback as we do try to include these kinds of shots and moments with music in order to immerse the viewer as best we can, while blending the how-to component. The reality is we're not a pop-culture channel but more focused on how you see it, that's our goal. :) Great to hear it is received this way! :) Dave & Amelia
What a rich, visual treat. Thank you, has an almost dream like soporific quality to it this film, lovely :)
:) So glad that came through. Some of those moments in time simply resonate in the mind's eye exactly as that. Hard to believe they happened and are possible, yet the footage doesn't lie. :)
Outstanding camera work, editing and fishing! Thanks so much for letting us tag along!
Great to hear. We actually fish and film with the audience in mind. It's one of the pleasures of being out here.... finding an engaging way to film and fish to bring everyone along 🥳
This is the epitome of fly fishing for trout! The scenery, the intro, the editing, the sound...it is perfection on every level. Thank you for the upload.
Thank you for your this mega does of positivity to what we do! It pleases us to no end to know how well this particular video has been received.
I live in Western NY, some of the best trout fishing in the country with so many tributaries, lakes, and opportunities. As anglers, sure we love to fish. The feelings of serenity and respect for the beauty of our environment that surrounds is just as attractive, just as meaningful, and does feed our spirit with admiration for God's creations. I thoroughly enjoyed your professionally made video, and experienced that same serenity I would have if I was there myself. Thank you very much for this. You fed my soul today. 🤗
This is fantastic for us to hear. It's certainly not all about the fishing and it never has been for us. When we can truly connect other people like yourself to the beauty, the solitude, the meaningful moment with a bird or a scene that inspires and feeds your spirit in some way, then we feel like we have a winner of a video. Thanks for taking the time to watch and sharing here.
Not just a fishing video. Cinematic and Relaxing.
perfectly what we were hoping to share :)
Enjoy watching your videos,,thank you so much...God bless & stay safe....
Thanks for watching. We're glad they connect with you:)
What a great mix of deep color, contrast and slow motion effect to make this a stunning video! The first cast with the slack cast to take that beauty Brown hooks you to watch the rest of the video! Super!
Glad you enjoyed it! We absolutely love these streams for the setting and immersion into the whole of location. Stunning locations... hopefully again one day! :)
Unfreakinbelieveable...My favorite fishing, big browns in a small spring creek.Sometimes technical, challenging, and sometimes maddening...👍🏻my new favorite video
Love these waters! Really, any fish you can see in neat lies in that water is such an amazing experience 😍
I’ve never found a TH-cam fishing page that takes this much time on b roll and watching you guys break down each and every fish is AMAZING. I’m a bass angler and you guys have me itching to catch a brownie
Well that's super cool. To get you interested in another species means we've actually found a way to capture your attention and that's always what we hope to do. The b-roll is such a big part of the whole experience when we're out there, so we always want to include that side of things. Thanks for stopping in to share your thoughts.
I usually don´t watch the longer videos, 25 minutes is a long time to sit and watch. But this one, the photography and light, the quality and quantity of the fish, just outstanding. Thank you for being the poets in my dreams.
That's wonderful to hear. This is more the direction we'll be heading over the coming year - even deeper into sense of place and letting it be while (hopefully) getting into a few nice trout. We hear you tho, longer videos are hard to sit and watch but watching on the TH-cam app on smart tvs is where this video really shines :) Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, they're appreciated :)
Thank you from Oz, one of the best fishing videos I have ever seen! Beautiful scenery and also love you music selection by Slpstrm, thank you for helping me discover them!! Can't wait for the season to open here and head for the Snowy Mountains!
You're welcome and thanks for your appreciation of this one. Pretty amazing 2 days for us.
Glad we could connect you to another artist that inspires and brings some joy to your world.😍
Holy smokes. Love the intimacy of small streams.
Those fish are amazing
Hi Book. Couldn't agree more. I'd rather catch smaller trout on a small stream than larger ones on big water. This was a wonderful video.
Those are the spots in the world and what we live for :)
100% all that. One fish each a day on these waters with a camera in hand and we're happy & content! :)
What a beautiful place to cast a fly. And what trout. You lucky, lucky people.
Absolute stunning location for sure. Lots of hard work to make this life happen... you get a lucky break through once in a while! :)
Your photography and editing is fantastic and deserves an award.
Thanks for that compliment and for watching. We sure put our heart and soul into places that capture our heart and soul. 😊
🎉Loving the bird scenes, specially the one at the end of minute one ❤ cheeers
The life in those creeks really came alive that day. Glad you enjoyed those:)
This is best video on youtube, hands down.
Thank you for such a big compliment. We put a lot of effort into this one and the sense of place we were hoping to share really shone through:)
What a beautyful film👌🏻🙏🏻🤘🏻🏴☠️thats real fly fishing....
greetings from switzerland
thank you - what a gorgeous place to enjoy life and fly fishing! :)
thank you - what a gorgeous place to enjoy life and fly fishing! :)
That was awesome theres nothing more poetic then fly fishing for trout you can almost get lost in that video 👍
Awesome to hear. 😊 love these spots 😍
Absolutely stunning! I saw in the comments this is NZ. I have to go there before I die because of this video.
It is definitely worth the trip. :) When the borders finally open once more, that is!
Probably the most beautiful sport fishing video I have seen on YT. Spotting the fish, and manage to display the beauty of nature in slow motion, timelapses and nice footage, proper upstream fishing. Nice
Wow, that's a huge compliment and thank you! All the pieces sure came together nicely for us with this one.
Another very fine video! You guys are fish magnets!
Glad you enjoyed this one - that is certainly a favorite creek found by poking about the flax bush swamps and made easier by different access :)
The visuals are top notch in this video. Thanks for putting it together.
Thank you 😊 mission accomplished then!
SWAMP THING(S) 2.0! Spring creeks are an amazing (and surprising) habitat.
Love watching those big pec fins - awesome animals.
Ha yes! Almost got swallowed up at a few points in this one, let alone the electric fences to deal with!
Yes, those fins are more like paddles!
This might be the best I`ve ever seen!
So glad you enjoyed it - it was a joy to fish, film & edit this one :)
Best film I have seen in a long time. Superb presentation of the fly, no whooping & idiotic jubilating
100% well done.
We're glad this one connected well with you. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. 🙂
Spectacular nature deserves breathtaking photography - you really nailed it (again)
#1 in our hearts is the sense of place and all that we're enmeshed into on these creeks. They present the biggest conundrum: is the rod or camera the greatest value in any given moment? :)
@@jensenflyfishing Thanks for sharing both in any case.
Incredible video. What beautiful fish and water.
One of our favorite places 😊
Amazing camera shots!!! That's a place I dream of!
You and me both now that winter is all around us!
LOVE fishing Browns - so cool to see the slow motion takes…awesome time lapse as well. Thanks for another great vid, cheers and FISH-ON!!
Glad you enjoyed it and great to share a few moments :)
It almost seems as if the world had come to a rest during this wonderful film ♥️
That sentiment is exactly what we'd love for a few people to feel.
Spectacular film! Love how every brown is unique
Thank you and they are definitely that 😊😍🍻
This reminds me so much of where I live in the flathead valley of Montana. I love fishing browns and when you have browns hitting dry flies you know it's going to be a great day.
And those days have that feel, don't they? And no better feeling! 😊
That's a fantastic day!
100% loved that one 🥳😍
I love all your videos, but this one is truly special! I had a little cry, oh how I miss being able to go there.
Thanks for the wonderful memories.
Great to hear. It was a special one. We may have time to edit a few more here before we head south to Patagonia for winter. We'll keep tabs on what NZ does with vax & borders. Always hopeful! :)
I get these in my recommendations and click, soon as I see Orvis in the tag my heart sinks, I know its going to be good, too good, I will never get to fish there or places like this, if I win the lotto perhaps, my numbers won't come up until after I am in a box, the location, the water and the fish, its something you just dream about.
@@Taz6688 great to hear! Well, if it's any consolation we don't have kids, pets, bad habits and roll all we have into keeping this life going as it is. Not always easy but here we are :)
Bloody Hell ! The visual presentation makes National Geographic look like a parody!! 🔥 absolutely stunning visuals, quality and slow motion capture that hypnotizes you! 👏
That's a great compliment, thank you. Glad we could produce something that connected with you and represented it well 😊🍻
You guys do such a great job, I’ve said it numerous times before and I will say it more then once in the future, some of the best content on TH-cam. You don’t even have to like fishing to appreciate this type of stuff!
Edit: fishing this type of water is incredibly difficult!
Ah, thank you. Our goal is to put you there with us, not to show off... just to share our experiences and hopefully that translates 😊 It's usually difficult to choose between the rod and camera as the best tool to use in any moment!
Such a beautiful video. Thank you from Éire (Ireland)
So glad it connected with you! 😊
Welcome to our channel.
Woow!! Good movie & fishing guys 👍 10/10
Glad you loved it and thanks for taking the time to watch it! 😊
Some incredible shots in this. I love the slow mo intro with all the wildlife.
That's wonderful to hear. Those additions of nature doing what it does best seem to really add value to a video, so we do our best to capture them as much as possible. Thanks for noticing, appreciating them.
You guys really outdid yourselves for this one.
Glad it connected well with you.😊
Nice and beautiful, thank you bro
glad you enjoyed this one, we love this stream :)
Thanks!
Thank you! :)
that first take and how it was recorded its just magnificent! beautiful fishing!
We're really glad you enjoyed that one so much. It sure was an eat that had us mesmerized:)
This is paradise on the Earth.
100%
This video is pure perfection, congrats from Portugal.
What a beautiful film. Well done the quality is excellent and the editing superb. Oh and your fishing is spectacular
Thank you very much! We hoped to do justice to the location with the filming and capturing a few great moments :)
Art of fishing in creek
Exactly what we hoped to share😊
amazing natural scenery
love these locations :)
I like the music and view of nature
Perfect! Thanks for watching:)
Wow, amazing footage. Really breathtaking. Superb production. Greetings from Sweden!
Wonderful to hear - glad you enjoyed this one. Love these locations :)
Great video editing and atmosphere, we share the same passions. Simply stunning guys!!! Congratulations on your interpretation of fishing and best regards from Italy 🇮🇹
Thank you for watching and appreciating how we film. Everything just came alive for us on these couple spring creeks. It just had to be captured:)
Excellent. Classic SC footage. I found it interesting that some of the larger freestone streams in NZ actually have spring creek headwaters. We came upon one by accident, but it was choked with log jams from the backwaters of a reservoir, we only found a few places worth fishing. There was another on the West side of the S Island that was nice.
A special couple streams for sure.
The discovery of those places are what make the whole fly fishing experience so worth it.
Great video, love the ones where the focus is on the fish, just watching it prior to the cast and hopefully the take.
We'll be aiming to hone in on this a little more, tied in with the scenery and sense of place in the next year :) Glad you enjoyed this one
Nice to see this from your West Coast Library! The cello matched the mood of the stream and the light beautifully. This season I am focussing more on those creeks (with some nice outcomes) while I figure out the extent of the flood damage in Canterbury. A good reminder to take a day off work this week and head over!
:) Tried to do the setting a sense of justice even tho most of how we filmed was high frame rate with no audio. We managed! They are wonderful streams and some have a few more trout than advertised yet. Others have been ravaged by Ag. The neat thing is just going and poking about and getting your nipples wet as you sink through the watercress! It'll be interesting to see how Canterburian waters bounce back. The mains should be about right come Christmas and the tributaries may offer surprises as refuges from it all. Hoping for the best! And leave a few for us should we be ever so fortunate to get in there late season... yeah, likely nah, but you have to dream! :)
@@jensenflyfishing I don’t know if you’ve hit it or not but there is one little trib of a bigger stone bottomed creek that has quicksand like bog when you get to the fringes. Frighteningly deep but unsurpisingly seems to hold the best fish! Makes the nipple tickling cress seem like a bargain. I will give you a wee update on the Canterbury back country soon. Got a few easterlies coming :)) looking forward to more back catalogue stuff with electric fences and bogs
@@TimmoMcGinn sounds like the one in this video :) Have hit 8s and 9s and heard of a 14 in it but never in daylight :) Sounds like quite a start to the season. :)
Great fantastic video....thanks for sharing guys !
Glad you enjoyed this one - a favorite day for sure :)
Best fly fishing channel ever !!!🙌🎣
Glad you enjoy it! :)
Love the pictures you’ve done a great job wished I was there.
Glad you enjoyed it
Великолепное видео! Монтаж, отсутствие слов, музыкально сопровождение - всё супер! Ну и конечно шикарная рыба, прекрасные рыбаки и великолепная природа!
Thank you - it is a special creek, a beautiful location :)
This is incredible. Subbed for sure. This is gonna be a binge watch channel.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it thus far. Some fun content coming your way the next few months 😍😍
that cast at the 12.12 mark then the slip set ... so good to see
Doing what's needed in a gorgeous spring creek :)
Nice scenery with the cows in the background 🐄
We love how these springs just come alive with beauty. Glad you enjoyed.

We're glad you really enjoyed the overall feel and style of this video. This particular one tugs at our hearts a lot as it shares springs that have meant so much to us. Thanks for sharing your appreciation of it:)
Used to love fishing the Ruahines....Ikawatea River was magical. Only ever caught a brownie in a farm channel near Lake Wairarapa!
those are all the magical locations aren't they? :)
@@jensenflyfishing Indeed...my years living in NZ allowed me to fish some incredible locations. Big rainbow on the Tongariro was amazing but small mountain streams, gin-clear water, upstream nymph.....an Xmas trip to NW Nelson Nat Park was a highlight, the Leslie River...except for the monster eels!!!
@@seamanjive the eels! :) th-cam.com/video/GooQ_EoCSn8/w-d-xo.html
Incredible slow-mo footage! Those are some of the best hook-set sequences I've seen.
Thanks so much! We appreciate the compliment. Those 2 pieces of water came together so wonderfully.
If you can’t get to NZ this winter, you should come catch searun cutthroat on dry flies in the Puget Sound near Seattle. Pretty fun to catch nice trout on dry flies in the middle of winter!
That's a great idea. Some great mood to that as well. We're literally hopping a plane for Patagonia through end of jan but Feb-March might be great 😊
Great video! Small streams are my favourite! Great soundtrack too!
:) Love these wee streams. The best soundtrack was the natural one. We'll be doing more of this as we get the opportunity :)
Absolutely beautiful video, fish and places loved it well done 👍👍🤜🤛
glad you enjoyed it. It was wonderful to finally edit this one and do it with some natural breaks into it. Silence on a spring creek is surreal. :)
Some dream fishing right there!!
gorgeous location and trout :)
Another tremendous video! Thank you for taking me on your adventures.
:) That was the goal - to immerse us all on a spring creek and just let it be for a few minutes between gorgeous browns :)
This is so wonderful it hurts....
That's a wonderful compliment! Thanks for watching. 😊
Awesome video as always thank you
Glad you enjoyed it. Was good to edit this one :)
Man, you guys are so good at what you do. The way you are able to present fly fishing captures it very well. It's exactly the vision I have for my channel. I just dont have the youtube skillset. I can fish but thats the easy and the funnest part. I'm in patagonia every year. I've found som pretty incredible spots noone else really knows about. If you guys go again let me know and I'll take you out there. Just to jave someone get these spots on video and do it justice would be well worth it for me.
We're glad you see value in what and how we share it. It takes some work for sure, but so worth it.
Thanks for the invite. We will keep that in mind for sure. We're always keen on in interesting water:)
Saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱, hermosas capturas muy lindo trabajo, espero más vídeos de ustedes 😌👋👏👏👏👏
Thank you and you're welcome. There will be more to come as we do love our spring creeks:)
Superb videography
Thank you.😊 We loved every minute of it.
Beautifully filmed. Loved all the dark brownies, but that weka shot at the beginning got me really wanting to go back to NZ. When my daughter and I were quite a few years ago (after she graduated from college), she took to calling them kiwi pigeons! Funny little birds ❤️
Ha! that's a great name for them really. We call them chicken ducks, because of their awesome webbed feet and how close you can get to them. Such curious birds too!
Wonderful Nature, Great Video 😊
We loved filming it and we're glad you enjoyed it.
Really really well done on the camera work! And the fishing too…
Thank you very much! This is a long-time favorite little piece of water :)
Beautiful. Put some butter on a brown. Well done.
Those colors are hard to beat, that's for sure:)
やはりNZはとても憧れです!いつも素晴らしい映像ありがとうござます!!
It is a gorgeous location. Like you we're missing New Zealand. Such gorgeous waters and trout. Hopefully next year! :)
Beautiful vidéo !
thank you
Good video thanks!!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful.
Thank you!
Magnificent fish
They really were. Such deep, rich dark colors.
Amazing video my friend 😍
Gorgeous locations always helps! :)
Awesome footage.😍
Thank you & glad you enjoy it! :)
Great video and fantastic fish, also some good skills as it wasn't always easy with all the plant and deep wading.
Hopefully I get to fish such a stream one day. I only have a very tiny creek to fish where a 12 incher is already a rare fish and most are well under 10 but with my 3 wt rod it is still fun. But with such fish it must be totally different
Those deeper springs (let alone the electric fences) can certainly eat you up if you let them!
Hopefully you find one that connects with you someday. But, rare fish regardless of size are something to be valued and going after them with a light rod like you do and experiencing the joy of that is equally of value:)
@@jensenflyfishing
Thanks yeah, catching a 12 incher in a tiny stream where most fish are like 6-8 inch is definitely exiting too, especially with a light rod and tippet and I do value it, many don't have trout opportunities at all.
Getting into the nature and catching some fish is the most important thing anyway, even if it is not a trophy.
But still one day catching a 20+ incher would be nice, maybe I can do a travel trip:).
But flyfishing is fun regardless, even going for panfish or small other fish can be fun if you are not in a trout region
@@dominikk8547 all of what you said - and the reality is that size is irrelevant if it means nothing to you anyway... and even moreso size is only relevant to the water we fish as a 10" golden trout in full color might be the real fish of a lifetime whereas a 15lb mouse eating NZ monster might leave you feeling empty in how you have to catch it (deep nymphing then hold on until it succumbs). It's all only relative to what we project and those other values are of highest importance :)
I love your videos. You guys are doing a great job with the visuals😍
That's really great to hear:) We've been so lucky to be able to capture some incredibly stunning waters with all the unique moments in nature that happen surrounding them too.
Wow! Love it~~^^
One of our favorites too! 😊
First shot of that brown cruzing was amazing.. Seeing you guys in that swampy water makes me ask.. How many leaches 😂
:) Those are gorgeous trout in that water. Leeches aren't the real issue in there tho... the 5 foot eels make you dissociative 8(

So glad you enjoyed it! Hope your season is great to you :)
Nice to see you back in NZ. Looked like an awesome day and some great fish 👍 It won’t be long now?
Ah, we have a mountain of footage to sort yet so this was a good one to edit for the mind's eye. We'll see how the vaccinations and subsequent debates in NZ go and what the borders do thereafter. Always hoping for the best!
Wow, what gorgeous water; you must feel privileged to fish such amazing water! I agree this is a truly special film and I love your passion, not only for each fish, but for the environment in total. Outta curiosity, on average how much time do you put in to get a minute of such stunning footage? I guessing a good bit...
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, 100%. The world has changed since we filmed this and it brings back so many great memories. We'll hopefully get there again one day and it was such an amazing experience to fly fish New Zealand 13 years running. We somehow made life work to be able to do it and we consider ourselves extremely fortunate. I would say that it took me about 14 hrs total to put this video together - so maybe 45 to 50 minutes per 1 edited, complete minute? That's about right on these videos. All told, on the timeline was 11hrs of footage to make 24 minutes. Heaps on the cutting floor. :)
I like fishing brother beautiful days
Love them! 😊🍻
This is Amazing. How on earth do you land those monsters on 7x tippet?!
carefully :)
