That is an amazingly beautiful bowl. I am just beginning and am watching tons of videos and have only turned small items such as pens and bottle stoppers. I want to start trying bowls/platters eventually but will need a larger lathe to do so. As of now I am learning on a mini/desktop lathe. Great work and video, will look for more from you.
Great video. Just to let you know that the filters on your mask are really for vapors and not so much for dust. The correct filter for your mask are 3M 2097 P100 which are designed for particulates such as saw dust. The added benefit is that they are much lighter than the ones you are using and cheaper too. Also the 7500 series mask is much more comfortable. I know because I used the 6000 series with your filters for 2 years and then upgraded. (Montana wood Art).
My understanding is that the vapor filters also filter particulates. I like the extra level. Blocks dust and vapor. Some finishes are smelly... Since this video I have gone to a full face respirator and like it even more.
I've never seen anyone turn with a plowshare before. Finger proximity to that massive spinning chunk and that enormous scraper made me twitch and flinch a few times. When that beast flew off the lathe, I almost had to stop watching at that point.
I think the old wild angle lens I used to use made things look more dangerouse that they were. that and I think I have improved a bit in my turning ability. lol glad you stuck it out!
At first I thought you were turning a steamship round of beef using an old snowmobile ski for a scraper. Turned out pretty good. Medium rare, in fact. Look in to custom white balance. 🤓🤓🤓
Amazing piece. You turned a stand in for the 1950's movie "The Blob" into a beautiful piece. I am amazed at how you do it with those big ugly burls. Keep up the good work!!!!!
Why the different set up with the lath with the white board around it? I’m very new to wood turning so have lots of silly questions. Also what is the oil you pour on the piece? It turned out beautifully and what an amazing colour. I love this piece a lot.
the white board was an attempt to corral my shavings and to give a bright backdrop for vids. I had mixed results and have since scrapped it. now I just accept the shavings going every where and I have better lights. the oils is a fifty fifty mix of shellac and boiled linseed oil
I am going to guess that is specifically Ceanothus spinosus- somethimes called "red heart ceanothus." I do not know of other species with that beautiful red color. I came into several of those 30 years ago and also found it hard to work with. I recently passed out some to other woodworkers who are using it for tool handles, knife handles; a couple of brave souls are going to try to turn some of the larger chunks. I will advise them of this video!
I know it as California lilac but common names are what they are so three is that. Turning It is challenging but I feel that if you let the burl tell you what's in it, you can get something from it.
it is sold by laguna. its an option on the laguna Revo Lathe. You can buy it separately but you would need to fabricobble a way to attach it to your setup. It definitively helps. especially in the hollowing.
Zombie Woodturner Maybe DAENERYS TARGARYEN, Queen of Meereen, Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of her name, Mother of Dragons, Protector of the Realm, Khalessi of the great grass sea, breaker of chains, Queen of the andals, the rhoynar and the first men, The Unburnt, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms.......etc.........
yes sir. it is the perfect balance of a begginner wood turner and an angry possessed burl with something to prove. I have noticed since making that video that I am getting better and not tearing up my hands...
+Michael Hunter originally it was to try and direct dust and chips into a dust collector with almost no success. Lol. The side benefit is that the white back drop really helps lighting on videos..... Love the revo !!
I absolutely love your turned pieces! Thanks for sharing.
Thankyou K Beckmann! welcome to the channel!

Amazing. That thing was a big ugly monster. Now it looks like some valuable artifact that's been unearthed from an ancient civilization. Beautiful.
Thanks Ferrin! that is a great description. This was one of my early turns and still one of my favorite!
Simply stunning.
Thanks Alison! this old video is still my top viewed video! you went deep into the playlist to watch thins one! ha ha
Nice burl, good that you didn't get injured.
It is a fantastic bowl and the wood color is amazing. Wow.

That would have been a good piece to cast in some resin.
Great scraper, Great bowl. Very nice.
A very brave man with a big tool.
Amazing piece. You turned a stand in for the 1950's movie "The Blob" into a beautiful piece. I am amazed at how you do it with those big ugly burls. Keep up the good work!!!!!
Thanks Charlene! tune in next wednesday I have a small ugly burl turn... ;-)

a lot of work,great job!
Awesome bowl.

how do you turn such amazing bowls
That was impressive. Do you have the weight before and after of the wood and the bowl?
no. which I did tho. it was pretty heavy. ceonothus is a pretty dense hard wood.
It's a good thing your batteries didn't run out on your force field generator, or you could've ended up with a permanent burl tattoo on you forehead!
Always wear you PPE.
Beautiful...
Great work,well done mate.
Nice job mate..👍👍🇬🇧
Fantastic Video. thank you. I love that big light you attached to your Lathe. Can you tell me where you got it?
it is sold by laguna. its an option on the laguna Revo Lathe. You can buy it separately but you would need to fabricobble a way to attach it to your setup. It definitively helps. especially in the hollowing.
What kind of wood is that
ceonothus. (California Lilac)
So did you get a rush when that big sucker came out after you?
oh yeah!. there is some weight behind those darn things. I would really rather they didn't come at me.
And yes I'm talking about the scraper!!!
oh. I see what you did there. lol
Just wondering what kind of a price do you get from this bowl??
As I recall that one went for over $100.
That is the second biggest scraper I've ever seen! What's yours about 3 foot wide? Cheers
the BFS5000! its a powerful tool. no mere mortal can wield it. ;-)

Veri good
Wow that thumb looks really close to that spinning wood.
What kind of wood is that?
Ceonothus. Common name is California lilac
lovely
Wow !!!!!
Your hands at the end seem to indicate that the burl put up a good fight...
yes sir. it is the perfect balance of a begginner wood turner and an angry possessed burl with something to prove. I have noticed since making that video that I am getting better and not tearing up my hands...
I have a Revo 1836. I see you’ve added a shroud on the headstock. Is that for dust/chip control?
+Michael Hunter originally it was to try and direct dust and chips into a dust collector with almost no success. Lol. The side benefit is that the white back drop really helps lighting on videos..... Love the revo !!
cuidado el agarre es lo mas importante
I found a piece of burl that is about 3 ft. By 3 ft.
nice..... what you gonna do with it?
I’m very new to the hobby. I’ll prob just let it age for now until I have enough experience and equipment to turn it.
It’s white oak.
nice. spend some time staring at it. it will tell you what its meant to be if you listen..
l^)
Crude i would of hollow turned it.
crude.... huh. well brother to each his own I suppose.
Amazing. That thing was a big ugly monster. Now it looks like some valuable artifact that's been unearthed from an ancient civilization. Beautiful.
Thanks Ferrin. Welcome to the Channel. Yes Ceonothus almost never disappoints!
