@@wisdommanari6701 I don't think she is mad. I think she is unexperirienced and uneducated at that point. Viserys told her lies and half-truths for her whole life. She just knows one side of the story. She has the right intentions, but executes it in a totally wrong way.
Her act in Astapor doesn't mean she was mad. She was incredibly furious. She was a slave by her own. She obviously hated it. And I think that due her own horrible experience she couldn't handle seeing slaves anymore.
She also doesn't understand that the ones who own slaves etc. don't know differently. She needs to learn this stuff. So yeah I am not trying to justify her actions here, I am just stating that I don't think she is mad. Cersei is mad. She wouldn't mind slaughtering innocents. Dany doesn't want to kill innocents, but she doesn't realise that she very likely did...

Considering all the evidence lately that The Dragon Demands has gathered, I feel it's pretty much 100% confirmed that Dany isn't going to purposely reduce King's Landing to ash. In fact from the initial scripts and concept art it pretty much confirmed the dragon fire was going to spread and accidentally ignite a bunch of wildfire. And considering this is where a lot of book foreshadowing is pointing towards, I'm inclined to believe that someone will ignite the wildfire - accidentally or purposefully - and Dany will be blamed for it. Also considering the type of people D&D are, if "Mad Queen Daenerys" was going to happen in the books, they'd most likely say it to try to get blame off of themselves, and yet even Emilia never heard those words, in fact they completely tricked her so she didn't even know the full extent of Dany's "turn" until the night the episode premiered. Daenerys may get darker, but she will never be mad or purposely kill civilians for no reason.

I don’t think Daenerys is experiencing any paranoia in the second chapter to be afraid of becoming the dragon. I think she doesn’t understand it.
She has pride in the dragon and learning to harness that strength. Which is what she truly gains here, not power. Power isn’t the theme. It’s strength. Being a victim and finding strength. Therefore gaining power. Power you need to use to change those things you were forced to accept.

  • @rianbeegles3349

I agree that the show made the right decision to show Dany and Drogo's consummation to be explicitly rape. Like you said, in the books Dany's first time is more cohersion than violent, explicit rape, but everytime after that first time - up until Dany's dragon dream and decision to sexually take lead - was a violent rape. It's a huge part on why Dany was becoming suicidal, especially considering the pain she was put in from that, combined with the pain from the horse riding. I mean even consensual sex would probably be pure hell with saddle sores, so yeah, Dany was physically and mentally in horrible pain.

  • @NeferLioness
    @NeferLioness 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

You have to remember that to a horse culture, one way to break in and understand a horse is through touch and voice. Compared to how the culture normally treated conquered women , this was still a better way. Yes, it had to happen...but this was MUCH better than what Bolron did later. This is a marriage of cultures so it won't look like what we are used to. Notice how the relationship changes later. I think her taking down his hair shows his willingness to be vulnerable to HER which was probably NOT in their culture.

Lol, i love Dany and really dislike Sansa, but one parallel i saw between them is how they both learn from their abusers. People always talk about how Sansa learns from Cercei and Littlefinger, but as you said Danny also takes on a part of Drogo. And the way she is always so observant, picking up all the little clues and learns to read people is so spot on, typical for the behavior of children who live in unsafe / abusive environments.

I don't see how anyone can read the books and come to the conclusion that show!Dany's choices will be the same as book!Dany's. They are completely different characters. Not only that, but isn't it obvious that the person who will be triggered by bells into massacring a city is Jon Connington? I know this is jumping ahead to the fifth book, but that character is traumatized by bells due to his loss at the Battle of the Bells. He even notes that he would have won if he had burned the town and everyone in it. Since Jon Connington wasn't in the show and they probably wanted to keep that story point in the series, so they gave his trigger and actions to Dany.

Another interesting parallel how many times Does Jon Snow say he's is blood of the North, Blood of Winterfel or has the blood of the First men in his veins? A ton
Call me bias but the Dothraki aren't so different from the Westerosi. They fight among each other and scrabble for plunder and self enrichment. They are just honest and upfront about it.
Danny merging with the horse makes sense skin changers CAN gain strength from the creatures that they bond with.
Again Westerosi politics are the same you marry into a Family for Military or political gain. For their army, for access to their food, to help curb your taxes etc. What Vicerys did was no different than Hoster Selling his daughter to Ned and Jon Aryan. A maiden head in exchange for an Army.
Ned wanted to avenge his father and Brother. Vicerys wanted to avenge his Father and Brother. But yes Grey area Vicerys is a terrible person to Dany.
So I also disagree with the consummation of the marriage. Yeah Khal Drogo is an absolute monster but it seems like he genuinely wanted his first time to be with his ex to be a gentle or at least pleasant experience. Also Danny saying YES was her first "choice" in the books. It's the difference between walking into a death match willingly and being dragged there. That Choice makes all the difference.
Speaking of forcing a woman to consummate a marriage do we view all arranged marriages as such? Catelyn, Lisa, Selyse, Elia, they all had arranged marriages they all "had" to say yes, and there would have been consequences for not going through the consumption. Maybe not physical retribution but definitely political shenanigans. 🤔
Also Drogo definitely got himself killed and Mirri said she would save his life and heal him and she did that.

    • @sweeteuthiedoll
      @sweeteuthiedoll 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Thank you for bringing this up. Just because the Dothraki were “savages” Dany was viewed like a lamb to slaughter when Roslin Frey was friggin terrified at her bedding ceremony. All these girls are being forced into this. Not just here. They’re all political pawns being sacrificed for someone else’s gain. Which is why Cat thinks there’s nothing more unfortunate than an ugly woman. At least Dany gets to say yes at some point instead of continued crying like Roslin.

@@sweeteuthiedoll Criticizing Westerosi for doing arranged marriages is like criticizing Westerosi for riding horses instead of driving cars. This political system with marriage alliances is the best political system that anybody in their world has discovered. It's a consequence of power in their world being based on Blood Right. Is there a better way to distribute power than Blood Right? Certainly. But this world hasn't discovered it yet. The existence of dragons has made it really impossible to overthrow the Blood Right way of doing things. So they're stuck doing things this way, which is why marriages are arranged and compelled.

Comparing the Dothraki to the Mongols is an oversimplification ... and perhaps misses the mark altogether, since the Mongols were actually sophisticated and had top-down government, even a "Pax Mongolica" that spanned for miles and generations. I'm not saying there's no Mongol inspiration for the Dothraki, but I think they're based more on the nomadic steppe warriors who followed in the wake of the dissolution of Roman power in late antiquity and who, like the Dothraki, didn't really have cities or monuments and were more prone to fighting one another than to falling under the leadership of one man. The Dothraki are more or less the fantasy embodiment of real history's millenia-spanning tradition of horse-mounted archer/pastoralist/raider/warrior/nomads, a tradition that at one time included names such as the Huns, Khazars, Alans, Mongols, Turks, Tatars, Avars, Magyars, and of course the Scythians, who terrorized first the Romans and then later the Byzantines and other emerging European forces. The Parthians were kind of an offshoot of the Scythians, and we know that they're a big inspiration for Martin, since, according to legend, they pioneered the whole "kill a man with hubris by pouring molten gold onto his head" thing when they killed the Roman general Crassus in 53 BC.

To me being okay with it is Cersei handing that girl over to Qyburn. Accepting it is you have to for survival, Dany handing that girl over to be “interrogated” for information in Meereen after the attack.
Tactical as apposed to senseless approval of violence.

This vids are great! My wildest fantasy for Dany is to take control of Braavos and the Iron Bank so she can conquer Westeros through debt collection .. and ya’ll know IB doesn’t forgo no debts, oh (f)Aegon sitting on the throne? Don’t matter, you have 5 days to pay back the 6 million dragons or face the dragon’s mercy. Oh Cersei burns KL? Doesn’t matter, taking the rest of realm as collateral evict every single lord out of their castles. Oh Euron wants to play magic? Face the faceless man dude, good riddance! John wants to claim the throne? I dare you to come up with 6 million in 10 days - again, I have dragons. Lol Think about it rn the IB is a key to the realm.

many of arguments is based on presentism. Huge logical fallacy. judging a historical (obviously it's not history , but it does happening in a medieval type time) event with today's moral values with totally different social and political environment. I think u guys r being too harsh on Drogo. He is living in a harsh environment but still he is being gentle and kind(sort of). He truly want to love her(in his way). his behaviour with her is totally different from Normal dothraki culture. He did not force himself on her but lets face it marital rape was common during medieval times. also westorosi lords used to follow culture like lord's right(some still do like Boltons).

Loved the commentary on Dany and Drogo's relationship. Gworl the fandom would have you think they were on their Formation Tour in Essos like Jay-Z and Beyonce.
Also, Love the moderator-cohosts, would like to see them again one day.
Also, we talk about the feminine dynamic between Sansa and Arya, but I think Dany's storyline is a combination of those two types.

I think Dany's dreams are two opposing forces, one trying to get her to wake the dragon and one trying to prevent her from waking the dragon. I think R'hollar is trying to get to wake the dragon,,, and The Great Other is trying to prevent her from doing so, and I think her feeling icy breath on her neck as she runs towards the red door substantiates this.

Isn’t it kind of pathetic that you had to waste your time with an ignorant statement? Clearly I was joking hence all the “lol” and emojis.
Furthermore I don’t care if someone has differing opinions about Daenerys, just be logical in your reasoning and don’t discredit the facts that Daenerys fans are presenting because of what biased reason you have. What is pathetic is same repetitive arguments that flat-liners keep trying to beat. It’s a medieval society. Being brutal was acceptable. Foreshadowing is NOT character development. Daenerys was NEVER power hungry (especially in the books) because she’s always had power and we saw what she did with it; abolished slavery, liberated Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen, traveled North to save Jon and the fellowship and later aided in the war for Winterfell. People keep trying to make Daenerys something she never was/is.
Daenerys character was intentionally dismantled by two men who said they hated her character.

It's obvious that Dany and Drogo had real love. You can't even deny it to make your point, because you know it's true. If I may hazard a guess, you're conflicted about Dany and Drogo because admitting that their love was real in the middle and end feels like a justification for the rape in the beginning.
I propose that the ends don't necessarily justify the means. People are complex enough that this kind of thing can happen, and I think the author is brave to show reality in its complexity. A different author might dumb down our fiction to make it safer and easier to deal with.
I don't see any indication that Dany has Stockholm syndrome. We have a direct line into Dany's thoughts, and with Stockholm syndrome I think we would see Dany making excuses for Drogo and trying to justify Drogo's rough treatment of her, but she does nothing of the sort that I can remember.
I think we have to give Dany credit where it's due. With Doreah's help and with a whole lot of inner strength, it appears to me that Dany carved out her autonomy in the relationship. She showed Drogo that he would be happier with a companion and mate rather than just a mate.
Likewise, I think we have to give Drogo credit where it's due. Because whether he was aware of it or not, he did come to realize that he would rather have a companion. He passes power to Dany both sexually and politically. So he isn't exactly the heartless beast that he's sometimes made out to be.

I can't see Daenerys being anywhere near King's Landing while it burns. It might fall victim to Cersei preventing fAegon from entering, or Euron or Victarion getting involved with a Dragon. And these fights might happen while she rides north from Volantis to Pentos and Victarion/Tyrion go north to Pentos by the sea. Jon Connington or Cersei are mad enough to start a fire in the Red Keep's Sept, triggering Aery's pyre by error when they bury either Tommen or fAegon, but Daenerys... can't see that happen.
Dragonbone bow could fit the Sellsword-companies like the Windblown. - And riding with Brown Ben Plum and the Tattered Prince to Pentos - in that conquest she could have gathered three heads, Ben being of Aegon the Unworthy's bastard-line and the Tattered Prince saying he was a rogue - (I took that as being of a bastard-line by the Rogue Prince.)
I can't wait for seeing Edmure and Roslin hosting some Dothrakis at Riverrun before Daenerys battles the White Walkers on the Trident. - Roslin telling them that in their wedding one half of the wedding party killed the other half... I just hear a Dosh Khaleen say: "Oh, you had so many deaths at your wedding? That must have been a really wonderful feast!"

@@GrayArea well you make the disclaimer yourself, but that wasn't in the video. And what if I told you the story of a girl that was meant to marry a guy she liked at 17-18, he gets killed, she is forced to marry his brother, gets pregnant, has to leave everything behind and move to a different, strange culture, he leaves and when she finally presents him their son (at age 19!) he brings another woman's son along. I have two questions:
      1. Don't you emphasize with her at least up to this point?
      2. How "grown-up" should a girl of 19 react to this?
The scale of their stories sure is different (and that's not what I'm comparing, wouldn't blame Mirri for killing Drogo either), but you were specifically talking about empathy in relation to the behaviour towards a baby (born or unborn) and it seems we actually agree that both were terribly wrong in this But I couldn't tell or would want to imagine how I would react in there place and time.

I've read that some of those natives enslaved other tribes. I guess they didn't have one conqueror who stood out... or if they did, it's not widely known. Supposedly, horses were not native to the continent... and the indians incorporated horses into their culture late in the game... so maybe, yeah... maybe the Mongols only were the inspiration.

It's interesting that she claims responsibility for Drogo's death when it seems like Drogo discarded her healing methods very quickly. Perhaps she meant she killed him through ommitance. Like, she knew of effective treatments (like cauterizing maybe) but chose not to use them on Drogo.

But Rhego would have burned the world. Remember the Bloodriders were willing to kill her at a moments notice. Think about it if she saves Drogo she can then ingratiate herself with Danny and kill her child more easily. What happens seems to be a mess that she took advantage of not some meticulous plan.

Nah. It is the same eggs. Years after Elissa sails west, it’s recorded that the Sea Lord has dragons eggs for show in his palace but they suddenly disappear at some point. She stole three eggs. Then some time after a Sea Lord has three eggs, then they disappear and Illyrio has three eggs and give them to Dany? Dragon eggs are not easy to come by yet there are three eggs circling around the same area for about 100 years until Dany get’s them and there are no longer any dragon eggs in the story. That most mean that it’s the same three dragon eggs that changed hands throughout the years.

She hears about the "bells" as a sign of surrender from Tyrion, who had quite a history of bad decisions by that point of a show. The Red Keep did open the gates, the armies did not disperse. She waited and no one in power came out and surrender the King's Landing. She understandably lost her temper..
