- Back in 2002, I was given a task in school to do a documentary. I thought to myself that it would have been nice to have seen a music video for a record that played in the AM Radio KDAY 1580 Los Angeles, back in the early 80's. That record was called "Lesson 1 (The Pay-Off Mix)-1983" by Double Dee & Steinski. You see back then, there was a record label called "Tommy Boy Records" who held a promotional contest in New York. Entrants were asked to remix the single "Play That Beat, Mr. D.J." by G.L.O.B.E. and Whiz Kid. The goal was to pack it with sampled appropriations of different genres of music and snippets of other medias. Then faced with following jury members that included Afrika Bambaataa, Shep Pettibone, and "Jellybean" Benitez awarded "Lesson 1" the first prize. Given that I was passionate about this era, and still am, I decided to compose a video which contains sources of videos and sound bites with syncopated beats, that I thought I can bring the song from a vision to a video. However, it turned out like a music video, when in fact I wanted to tell a story. In any event, I had fun doing it. I'm hopeful you will enjoy it. Thanks for watching. Peace.
