I once encountered a man playing a hand-pan outside my favorite coffee shop. I wanted to jam, but all I had was my laptop and a speaker, so I joined in playing virtual synths with my computer keyboard. Then a guy who happened to be a drummer came and sat next to us and started playing drum lines on tabletops and his body, as well as mouthing some more electronic sounding drum fills, snapping and clapping on some backbeats, and overall creating a very solid groove with just his hands. Then a jazz student carrying his saxophone came and joined in too, and the hand pan guy started singing, at which point the rest of us started improvising backing vocals. So overall, with four guys we had
    -hand pan playing arps
-computer keyboard playing chords and bass
    -full stomp percussion suite
    -sax lead lines
    -improvised vocal melodies
    -improvised harmonies that sounded rehearsed
It was an ensemble with a totally unique sound, which had never happened ever before, and we played outside that coffee shop for an hour, amassing quite a lot of attention before going our separate ways never to meet again. One of my most memorable musical experiences.

I hear through the mixed Eastern and Western rhythms the curiosity of a traveler, and through the energetic dizi the joy you felt among the people you met. It strikes me that as different my impression of Taiwan is from yours, the unique sound of your composition gives me a glimpse of my homeland through your eyes, even though we've never met. And that realization moves me to tears.
