2 Ways to Wear a Sarong - Sri Lankan Style

  • Sri, whose family is from Sri Lanka, shares 2 ways to tie a sarong - Sri Lankan style!
The methods of draping a sarong vary by country. This video explains how to drape it the way men do in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, we call the sarong "sarama", which means "sheath" (women in Sri Lanka do not wear sarongs - they wear a seamless wrap called a "redda").
A real sarong always has a seam. It is different from the Indian "lungi" which is seamless like a redda or dhoti.
Sarongs are wonderful to wear while travelling in South Asia as it helps reduce pickpocketing and bug bites (including those pesky mosquitoes!). It also keeps you protected from the heat of the sun while allowing for amazing air circulation which keeps you cool. We loved wearing them while travelling around, and even use them around the house.
You can also wear the sarong as a pajama. You can even use it to carry laundry in by tying up the ends!
You do not have to use underwear if you are wearing the sarong as loungewear around the house, but men usually do when going out and for functions. Also, if you wear a t-shirt, wear it outside of the sarong (in the video, the t-shirt is tucked in only to show the folds of the sarong).
When wearing the sarong for a function, it is customary to wear a shirt with collar and sleeves.

*This is quite interesting because this is exactly how it's worn in Somalia, even keeping the shirt un-tucked. Especially the second style that he mentions, that he saw in a fashion show, that's the older and more comment style here. While the first style that he shows is more common in Yemen.*
The only thing is, it's considered immodest for a man to walk around with shorts here.

@@cultureclasstravel6716 considering Somalis and Siri lankans have history between them, so its not wierd that we pick up something from eachother.

Today is the first time, I wear a (self made) sarong at home. Looks a bit weird here in germany but it feels very comfortable! A specially now with the upcoming heat wave!

I tie the second way... Then inside the knot I put a small plastic card, i.e. old telephone card or so... Then the tie is very strong...

Genial video. Yo compré uno en Sri Lanka hace 5 años y todos los veranos lo uso para estar en casa. Lastima que aquí en España no se lleve por la calle, ya que es tremendamente cómodo. Un saludo

Hi! Amazing video!! I’m from Brazil and I’m a fashion student. My undergraduate final project is about clothes in Sri Lanka between 1920 and 1930. Can you help me? Sinhalese people use it different from Tamil people? That’s a special way to wear it in 1920’s? A butler that worked in a tea farm house would use it how? Thank you very much!

The only thing is, it's considered immodest for a man to walk around with shorts here.
Also men quite often use a belt with it if they want to be sure that it's secure for the whole day without a worry.
While young boys gather it up between the front legs and then tuck it behind their back through their legs when playing sports making a sort of shorts out of it.
The twist knot that is common in India is not seen here and is considered improper (here) as it will cause creases and will lead to an ironing nightmare.

Hello there everyone!!! My dad REALLY wants one of these but he wants one exactly like the one in the video (connected in a loop, instead of just a long sheet of cloth). Is there a word to differentiate the different types of sarongs?
