  • I’ve needed some time to find the right words in light of these horrific terrorist attacks in Israel. I typically find what I’m trying to convey comes out best through the music that provides me with comfort, hope, and a way forward. I urge you to read Neranenah’s official statement as it iterates how we are all feeling right now in these unimaginable moments. I hope that you can take solace and find peace in this rendition of David Broza’s song “Yihye Tov,” which translates to “It Will Be Good" and was written on the cusp of the 1977 peace negotiations with Egypt. Its lyrics about the hope for peace remain just as important today.
I first heard this song during the summer of 2005 while on a high school trip to Israel. I had purchased this album in Tel Aviv, shortly before our stay in the town of Eilat was elongated last minute to avoid bombings nearby. I remember everything about discovering this song made me feel sad yet also hopeful, and I often become overwhelmed with the same feelings whenever I revisit it. Today, I'm even sadder than I was when I first heard this song, yet I cannot help but still feel hope for better days ahead.
It's in times like these that I'm drawn to the piano, feeling deeply what Leonard Bernstein wrote: "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." I often see firsthand the magical capacity music has to bring polarized people together, and it's times like this that I'm grateful for the existence of music, the arts, and my role as a musician.
I don't have any answers, solutions or news to offer, but music is light and in times like these we need light. It's my honor to bring that light as best as I can to those who need it most.
