First song I ever heard by Nickel Creek; I just caught a piece of it over the loud speaker in a book store. I immediately bought the album and it/they have been among my favorite artists every since. Smoothie Song is the best running tune on the planet:) I saw Nickel Creek in Tucson just after When in Rome came out, saw Punch Brothers in Montana, and so many of their/his music are mine and my kids' enduring favorites! If you haven't yet, check out Chris' album with Yo Yo Mah, Edgar Meyer, and Stuart Duncan "the Goat Rodeo Sessions"; it is one of my other all time favorites.
Whatever type of mandolin Thile is playing in this video he needs to play more often. I also would love to hear him play guitar. I mean that as no disrespect to Sean Watkins who I consider - as his sister Sara(h) - a virtuoso.
This is actually a bouzouki, which along with the different size and timbre than a mandolin, has slightly different tuning. By the way, when Nickel Creek started out Sean played mandolin and Chris played guitar, but they soon decided to switch, and the rest is history. :)
My greatest wish is to see Chris pick up the electric guitar and record an absolutely ridiculous alt/bluegrass album. He's got the voice for it, and the few heavier originals and covers he's done are amazing.
@@JabezGill Deceiver is a great album. Several cuts explore the rock and roll potential of the mandolin, a rich field for exploration. On the album, Chris plays all the instruments (10 or 12 of them) and does all the vocals. I believe he won a Grammy for producing it. Definitely a must for all you Thile-philes out there.
@Tucker Slack Hi Tucker! I am no expert so I could be wrong, but from my understanding the lines are blurry between an octave mandolin and a bouzouki - I do know on this piece he is tuned to GDAD which tends to be more of a bouzouki tuning, and on the album This Side he refers to it as a bouzouki. On the other hand the actual instrument he is playing could very well be an oddly tuned octave mando.
They only make the entire show visible twice. On the day of airing (Saturday's) and on Sunday it is re-aired. You can hear the whole show anytime at Prairie Home Companions home page.
A year ago I didn't know who Chris Thile was, now he's converted me into a freaking bluegrass fanatic
That's how it happens. :/ All downhill from here, I'm afraid. He's just too good.
Oh my god same! I used to say I hated bluegrass/country but now all i'm listening to is Nickel Creek & The Goat Rodeo Sessions!!
I bought a mandolin because of him about 20 years ago.
Also, if you haven't... check out Billy Strings.

Loved them on prairie home companion
I consider this to be Nickel Creek's "Brubeck piece" because of the time changes, especially in the chorus.
I hear a lot of Mahavishnu Orchestra in it. Great stuff.
I've not heard this song before now...love it.
Just AWESOME! You guys are so amazing and fun to watch. Love this driving piece...rich and full and complex!
Absolutely outstanding

Huge Fan, I hope they will continue to fill our hears with music!
Exceptional.
I won’t ever be convinced that Chris is actually from this planet. I just won’t.
Love this song, it's addictive too!

Josh Hana Have you ever checked out his album “Deceiver” (ca. 2004) ?

I bought a new mando because this song singlehandedly got me back into bluegrass. Now I gotta buy a bouzouki 🙄
I'm picking my jaw off the floor
Anyone know what octave mando Chris is playing here?
Too bad they didn't have Robert Trujillo from Metallica guest star on bass for this performance like in the music video!
Anyone know where I can see the fulll show?

Sean's winces when that low D rings out of tune. Feel for him.
If Chris Theile could stop those psychotic movements... 😅
