The phrase "draw a bath" comes from the days when we didnt have plumbing and had to draw out the water from the well.

    • @wingedjellifish11235
      @wingedjellifish11235 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +46

Yes, and that use of the word "draw" is related to its broader meaning of "causing (a thing) to move via pulling." It shares an etymological origin with "drag," in fact!

@@unstaybul I... Hadn't given much thought to the exact semantics of the word draw! I'd need to elicit a bunch of felicity judgements from different people to be really confident, but based on my own native speaker intuition, I'd say no? I can draw water out of a glass using an eyedropper, gravity draws water to the lowest local elevation, and I could draw water across a tabletop by dragging my finger through a spill. But if I were pushing the spill with a rag or pouring water out of a glass, I wouldn't consider it an acceptable word to describe that action with. So for me at least, I think the use of "draw" comes with restrictions on the method/manner by which one causes the water to flow, but if you use it differently, please let me know!

For our wedding we did a Doctor Who theme without it being overt. We used drinking glasses etched with the Tardis as the vases for the table centerpieces along with different quotes from Dr Who about relationships. An ice cream bucket is a plastic gallon-size bucket. They have a plastic lid and a plastic handle and can be cleaned completely. Most truckers (even without medical conditions) usually use soda pop or water bottles and throw them in the trash; using the bucket, particularly if he is washing it out between uses, is just a more sustainable option.
Now, if he's going home and washing out the bucket in the same sinkful of water with the dishes you eat on, maybe there is a conversation that needs to occur about that...
    But either way, yeah...

I try to hold it as long as i can, 1 hr to maybe an hour & a half a most (pee) or i have to go there and then (poop). Anymore i get excruciating pain.
If i can , i go at the side of the road but if i've held it in too long and in agony , it won't just go whoosh and done. It take 5 or so minutes and changing sitting positions for my body to relax to let me relieve myself.

When I heard "Ice cream bucket" I imagined the gallon sized plastic buckets that you can get in American grocery stores. My parents always got those because being a family of 5, we could eat a lot of ice cream in the summer. We always kept the buckets for various uses. some for cleaning around the house (holding soapy water) some were used in the garden to protect plants on frosty nights, some became sand box toys, some became storage for things. they were really handy and sturdy. I would hope that he'd give the bucket a wash after emptying it when he had to use it, but if it's one of those plastic buckets with a lid then it's not that bad of a thing to use in emergencies IMO. Also in America it's illegal to pee on the side of the road. If you get caught you would be charged with indecent exposure, so it is more common to pull over and pee in the car into some sort of container in emergencies.

No red at a wedding is a pretty recent thing, red as a colour supposedly signalling promiscuity is a very new idea. People claim it's a historical thing, and it even has made its way even into reenactment "Victorians wouldn't wear red! That's for slnts!" except Queen Victoria wore red in a portrait.
Many wedding rules that people claim are very old turn out to be very recent. No white was not a rule because most brides did not wear white (or white only, white wedding dresses existed, because white dresses in general existed, brides simply wore their best clothes, which could be any colour) for a very long time.
So red as a guest is only rude because some people made up a rule about it very recently. That's not to say that those people won't find it rude, but the reason (she slept with the groom) is complete nonsense. It's also not a common thing in most places. I only heard about it from a few people from the US.
I learned that black is more offensive because it implies mourning the wedding instead of celebrating it, but that's a fairly recent thing too.

As a guest to a wedding, I tend to just raid my closet a few days before. 4 weeks is MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME to pick another outfit.

It'd be great if everyone had the ability to just be comfortable in their body and left unbothered when they choose to dress (or not dress) a certain way, within reason of course.

Swedish perspective here. I live in a suburb that's fused with a by Swedish measures larger city. If you're on the motorway there's no place to stop unless you leave the main road. As I understood it, the problem arises when traffic is backed up and when that happens, the back road clog up with people trying to get around it. Even trying to get off the main road can take 20 minutes but you also can't really know in advance how long it's going to take.

I feel bad for the guy who needs to pee alot. A "icecream bucket" does not sound great. You can buy things like pocket toilets (basically a folding bottle you can pee in) , travel/camping toilet, you can even just buy sealable sick bags that can hold alot and be disposed of safely :)
I have alot of health issues and have looked into emergency toilet needs alot. The best seems to be a sickbag type thing , they can be slid into your pocket or your glove compartment or under your seat or whatever until you need them and then you can seal it safely so nothing gets out and then you can bin it once your at the other end.
I hope they don't feel ashamed or anything ♡
Also a kids travel potty could be useful. I definitely think they need to find a more hygienic way to do this but the fact they had something even if it was a icecream tub shows that they obviously can't "just hold it in" and it's something they are trying to handle.

The Wedding One: My rule of thumb is “if it doesn’t go out on the invites, it’s too late.” I know the bride didn’t choose her own dress by then, but (I mean in the kindest way) that’s her fault, not the people who may have already purchased clothing. If I was the bride in that situation, I might still ASK people not to wear the same color too, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with asking. BUT if someone already bought/planned a similar dress, I would accept that as the consequence of making such a last-minute request and harbor no hard feelings! The cousin is weird/the main drama in this story, but objectively, the couple can’t expect perfect wedding etiquette from the guests when they aren’t displaying their own as the “hosts”. It’s not about tradition, it’s about being considerate of people’s time and money. Asking is fine, but I would add a caveat to the request for the people who may have already chosen red. The other alternative is not being upset if anyone shows up in something not up to dress code because they didn’t have time/money to go purchase something else. When I’m a guest, I choose my outfit a month or 2 ahead of time at minimum, usually as soon as I get the invite and see what season it will be! I don’t own many dresses, most of the ones I do have were purchased for weddings specifically, so it’s not true that everyone just has alternatives sitting around in their closet. And while there may be time, that does not mean there is money. “just go buy another one” is not considerate of people’s various financial status’. I think if they wanted to be strict on this rule, they should’ve taken responsibility for that desire and figured out the dress much earlier; pre-invites.

Like I'm assuming op is talking about those big ice cream buckets that are usually meant for parties which are water proof, resealable, and are generally meant to be reused like any other similar duty containers like trash cans or sand castle buckets. Also it's been washed meaning it doesn't even have any pee in it. She's acting like a toddler herself like that bucket is somehow permanently contaminated and thereby contaminating everything else around it because at some point it had pee in it. The "it's not in the exactly one space it should be therefore it's wrong and bad" is far more toddler behavior than someone recognizing and accommodating a need that not everyone else has in a safe and healthy way. Also the whole why don't you just hold it is actually terrible advice for anyone as holding it in too long is the number one cause of UTIs and you can get so so sick doing that. I trained myself to eat excessively spicy food (Indian, Thai mostly) but I got sick of my flat mates eating my food so I made sure it’ll hurt them and it stopped 😂 I eat really hot curry with ice cold water everyone looks at me like an alien, I’m thirsty not trying to dull the burn thank you 😂

38:31 it's a public decency thing. If you just pee on the side of the road and someone reports it, it is public indecency or at worse public nudity. But if he pees in a bucket in the privacy of his car, he is 1) less likely to be reported and 2) have a reasonable case if he is reported. I've been on my share of long drives with no bathrooms and we used a tin can or Gatorade bottles.

The Vicks story gives me VERY vivid images of that one weird Red Bull-drinking uncle who your parents suddenly stopped inviting to Christmas dinner. I can only read it in the voice of an old biker man screaming it in the middle of a family barbecue 👁👁

If I had been invited to a wedding (or any other party) and I have an outfit sorted out, I would be pissed if they would suddenly inform last minute change of the dress code. Considering that the outfit I have, would now be a no-no and I wouldn't have anything suitable at home. I don't like shopping clothes and don't like using a lot of money to clothes I might not wear again. So if I'd be forced to get a new outfit, I wouldn't be happy about it.
If planning to have a dress code in a party, should state that in the invitation.

I agree. 4 weeks is short notice for a wedding dress code, which is something that should be communicated on the invitation. I understand that the bride only decided recently, but then I don’t think she should expect others to not wear a certain colour that is not public knowledge not to wear (ie not wear white or black). We cannot assume that everyone will have multiple outfits for special occasions.
Having said that, I also think the cousin is being overly dramatic. She could have communicated in a calm manner that not being able to wear the dress she planned to wear is an issue.

My guess for "drawing a bath" is that it probably comes from "drawing water from a well" for the bath (when you had to hand fill a tub with buckets of water)? IDK where "drawing water from a well came from unless that's a shortened form of "withdraw"
So I don't actually know and don't quote me but I'm hypothesizing that it went
withdraw water from the well -> draw water from the well -> draw water (from the well) for a bath -> draw a bath

You need to get those big plastic viks vapo deffuser. They saved me when we lived in a place w black mold and were constantly sick. Its easier than trying to shower with it and more potant than putting it in a bowl and you can sleep or so other things while it does its thing.

The instructions on Vicks Vapor bath say to use two rounded caps full in a bath, so she definitely could have used too much by accident if she just poured it in.

I agree with you and Roly about the red wedding attire. They are NOT the drama. I don’t understand so many people saying otherwise. It appears to be a ‘nice attire’ function but not formal at all, so how difficult would it be to substitute the cousin’s chosen outfit for any nice business attire. A nice pant suit? The wedding couple are NTA for sure.

Peeing on the side of the road: I am not sure, but if he gets out to pee, he may be at risk of a public indecency ticket. Also, my drives on roads that go through fields it’s going 80mph with no shoulders on the road. I would not want to pull over myself 😅
