I am age 71 and have been a watch collector for years. At this point of my life I’m downsizing. I am now giving watches away to my kids and 5 grandchildren however, when I saw this watch, I wanted to own one . My father was a Navy surgeon, on Guam and Okinawa during World War II . Unfortunately when he was shipped home once the war ended , his Seachest was stolen enroute so he lost everything including his military watch. I considered a vintage original but decided to get this modern recreation for trouble free operation. I bought it on Amazon for $204 as a 71st birthday present technically from my wife, even though I picked it out 😊. I love it. I also like that 10% of the funds from sales are given by Bulova to teach watchmaking to US military vets and that It’s made in Japan and has a Japanese movement. It is an example of how things have changed for the better in our world from enemies to now great friends, America, and Japan ! 🇯🇵 🇺🇸
I have admired the look of the Bulova Hack for some time. It looks like the first watch I was given as a child. I wish Bulova made a version that was manual wind only. The case could then be thinner and it would be closer to the original design specification.
The price is a reflection of the brand....when you look at value this falls into the heart over head category for me....like you I do love a good field watch, my favourite are cwc....this is a good watch but with a couple of minor tweeks it could be amazing, of course with Bulova tweeks will equal a price hike and you'll still be left with the same value quandary....all that said, I'd be happy to have one as part of my collection....🏴⌚🏴⌚
I love mine, I have the gunmetal case model which I got new for $180 USD. Like you, I can’t really explain why I love it so much, but looking at it genuinely brings a smile to my face. It’s reliable, quite legible to read and just lots of fun.
i just bought a great field watch from Watchdives . its the San Martin SN020 ltd edition, numbered dial . its a homage to the Serica field watch but its automatic with San Martin build quality . It is a perfect everyday field watch with some charm and great build quality.
So if it wasn't over-priced and it wasn't a bargain, doesn't that mean it was correctly priced, especially for a watch that can trace back to actual WW2 military watches? To me, Bulova's line of lower cost, vintage inspired military watches is roughly equivalent to the "Basic" line of flinger watches from Laco. In both cases, the watches aren't the absolute cheapest available, but they are reasonably priced and from companies with history that dates period from which their watches take inspiration.
It is a wonderful watch and I was very happy to find a Bulova that spoke to me. I have wanted to experience the brand for some time and this was my first from them.
People might malign the specs, but it makes the watch more accurate to the time period. How would you rate the quality control? (Dust in the dial etc.)
Baltany Khaki field has a brilliant sapphire crystal, screw in crown with 100m WR, and user-friendly NH35 and discrete date wheel. Better dimensions too.
I had the same attraction to the Bulova hack initially too. Here are three watches I've come across since that have made me lose interest in the Bulova almost completely: Draken - Aoraki Douglas - Outrider Boldr- Venture
No, you shouldn't. I have one. I LOVE the face, and I really really wanted to love the watch, but its just too freaking tall to be a useful field/tool watch. It doesn't slip under shirt/uniform wrists at all. If you're in a hands-on occupation, it will bang into things and catch on things because its so tall. Maybe if it were a pure mech it would work, but as it stands, its just way too tall on the wrist to be a functional field watch.
Hi! I purchased this watch and an extra band. I have been looking all over the internet and I have no idea how to replace the strap. I see no spring bar to open nor any pins, would you be able to give me some advice? Thanks!
You are watching James,.. My name is James, You're watching me..! 🤙👍🏽 I love your signature entry into your TH-cam channel..! Quite inviting... Tell us something about your Ring..are your fingers bigger than usual 😁😉!
Great looking watch but the thickness puts me off. Shame as i really liked the version with the red 13 to 24. That view of it looking down your arm made me think its not for me. Good review highlighting a (for me) negative.
@@WATCHingJames I hear you friend, there’s no excuse for such weak water resistance in 2023 at that price point though NON. When I was looking for a field watch I happened across the Bulova and it looked to be exactly what I was looking for then I saw the 3 bar WR rating and pulled my finger off the button. Damn shame. Bulova could easily upgrade the WR rating for literally mere pennies to say 100 meters WR with little to no price increase. Why they don’t do this and why they didn’t do this in the first place is anyone’s guess. Not doing so has cost them a lot of sales in my opinion.
I bought it from Bulova’s website. I don’t care what anyone says do not buy items such as this watch from Amazon with Amazon you don’t truly know what you’re getting. I am an Amazon FBA seller and you will be surprised at how creative people are getting with counterfeits. And the Amazon workers who work at the warehouses for $16 an hour are not going to care to verify its authenticity they don’t get paid enough. Spend a little more and get it from the original manufacturer. Buy once cry once that’s my motto.
Too small for me. I like my field watches larger for my ageing eye. Having said that, generally, Bulova doesn't do it for me. This is probably the best Bulova I've seen.
...... it is an excellent watch but the image on the back is seriously crap , despite the heartwarming back story ..... an amateur graphic to say the least , distorted figures and a pathetic composition ...... I have both the 98A255 and the ivory dial 96A246 and adore them ..... and as a disclaimer I've have been a visual artist and watch collector for forty plus years so have some skin in the game ......

That is fantastic to hear.

I agree. This style suits manual wind only and would be helpful to slim it down a bit.
The First Bulova that I found that I really like. This one has something special about it.
I like how the 13-24 numerals are large enough to actually read.
I do like that they have done on the dial. It looks great

I think you hit the mail in the head there. This is a heart watch for me. Does not tick all the boxes but i still love it.

Don’t know why Bulova and Hamilton have field watches with specs that I think fall short…in particular the water resistance.
I would think it would be reasonable easy to make them 100m w/r. But I guess they are not concerned about that.

You can’t go wrong with a San Martin.
good review. not into these type of watches at the moment. but my taste seems to be changing. will revisit the video if it does. cheers
Mine too. It is funny how different my collection looks now to how it looked 3 years ago.
Classic dial, handset, and crystal. This one definitely talks to me in the field watch department!
It has a really good look and feel to it.
I have this watch and at $200 it is a bargain. Very good looking and has a true military feel about it
It has such a great feel to it. Definitely a great one to have in the collection

Well it is a well-known brand, very good review James.
I am glad that I eventually bought this one.
People might malign the specs, but it makes the watch more accurate to the time period. How would you rate the quality control? (Dust in the dial etc.)
I was very happy with it.
No issues that I came across. Even under macro.
Great review, James 👌
Thanks Frank. It is a great watch.
I love it as well and I have the same confusion over it lol. Just wish Bulova made their own movements.
This with their 9000 series would be epic.
I have one, great watch but only 30 metres of water resistance is a bit low.
It has a great feel to it. A really nice one to have in the collection
Baltany Khaki field has a brilliant sapphire crystal, screw in crown with 100m WR, and user-friendly NH35 and discrete date wheel. Better dimensions too.
I will definitely have to try a couple from Baltany.
Good review, I have a Bulova Hack as well. Just subscribed.
Thank you for your support. The Hack is such a great watch. It has a great feel about it.
@@WATCHingJames Yes it does and I can't figure out why.
I had the same attraction to the Bulova hack initially too. Here are three watches I've come across since that have made me lose interest in the Bulova almost completely:

I really like the look of the Draken too.

It has the standard spring bars. I swapped mine out to another strap.
The strap might just be a little tight
@ thanks!
If it had acrylic instead of mineral I’d say yes but mineral is a nonstarter
Thanks for WATCHing

Does this have anti-reflective coating James ? That's why i haven't gone with the Hamiltons so far.
Yes it does. But it did not feel like there was a lot of it.
@@WATCHingJames Thank you James ♥
Is it easy to swap out the strap if you don't like what it comes with?
Very easy.
bulova use to be so great
I have struggled to find models from theirs that I like.
But now suddenly have three
This Hack, the parking meter and my favourite the computron.
@@WATCHingJames i have their accutron 2
If you have issue with this watch, look at Timex Expedition North, better material, respectable movement, bargain price.
I have a particular Timex on my wish list. I just have to find it now
Good Lord thats a tempting price for a field watch from one ofthe original Dozen.. and maybe it won't steam up on a hot day like a Hammie😂
None of those issues thankfully 😊
Lovely looking watch this Bulova, terrible spec though for the price. I mean three bar water resistance….. for a field watch in 2023 come on now!
I know. I have the same feelings about. But it does have a charm to it that helps make up for that.

There are a few things that would make this one a next level watch. But as it is it is still very nice.
@@WATCHingJames definitely!
