      Ahhh, the old issues of shooting out of order! The Scene in the woods between Eddie and Chrissy was one of the last shots done (They had already filmed her death) So they didn't even have the option of changing it. They saved Steve (who was supposed to die in season one) but spotted his potential as a character early enough to change his fate.

    Your genuine surprise as Joyce read the words "Hop is Alive" was delightful. Most of us had this long since ruined. We suspected it with the "not the American" line, but a season 4 trailer confirmed it. You got to enjoy the surprise.

      It seemed obvious to me that she was playing D&D with a group of other middle schoolers for the last year, while the boys moved on to a group with other high schoolers.
      And level 14 is quite a high level. She had to be playing quite a lot. Assuming she started at level 1 with her other group. It's 880,000 XP earned to get that high in AD&D. That's many sessions, probably multiple full campaigns.

    And back in the age of VCR tapes, she returned the tap unwound, at a specific point - that’s how Steve could tell. At video rental places, it’s where the phrase “be kind, please rewind” came from. The employees have to rewind the tapes to the beginning in a VCR before they can put them back on the shelf. • @chrisd7047

      @@soulscyther666 No idea how old you are, obviously, but in the '80s there was very much still a feel of "kids will be kids, let the pecking order determine itself," hands-off approach to adult supervision. When GenXers say we were allowed to roam free, we aren't kidding. When a bunch of kids are allowed to run around with little to no supervision most of the time, it ends up in a Lord of the Flies hellscape pretty regularly. Look up the documentary on Action Park sometime. Is the depiction here a little over the top? Sure, a little, in much the same vein as the depictions of bullying in The Karate Kid are over the top. But they are more accurate than they are inaccurate, and if you're the victim of the bullying, it feels exactly like how it's depicted. There is a reason why rage metal and thrash metal and, eventually, grunge music took root in the '80s. It's a miracle any of us survived.

    I've personally seen this type of bullying. Bullying used to be super violent when I was younger and the older people in my family who grew up in the 70s and 80s also experienced this type of violent bullying behavior as well. Staff and teachers would ignore, brush off, or even participate in the bullying! During the late 90s and 2000s is when we started anti-bullying campaigns, concerts against bullying, and how to identify bullying and how to interfere. We also started to pass laws that held schools and parents responsible. Nowadays it's mostly cyberbullying and less physical. I find it interesting when ppl react to movies and shows with horrific bullies and ppl say is over the top, but in real life and certain places and especially during this period, this was a normal part of life. You were told to suck it up or stand up and get used to it cuz it's life. Glad it's not like this anymore, cuz kids passed away left and right because of it.

      Yeah, some people (i.e. younger Millennials and GenZ) don't understand what it was like for GenX and older Millennials. Teachers and staff would definitely ignore problems and sometimes even be bullies themselves. For guys, getting into fights was common and it was expected that you'd handle it yourself, toughen up, and "act like a man." I don't know how often situations got violent for girls; probably more often than I'd think, but still less often than it did for guys. Regardless, there was very little empathy shown to kids in school as being bullied was almost considered a "right of passage," despite how ridiculous that might sound to some.

You learned that life was tough and unfair, you learned to deal with it, or stand up for yourself. meanwhile the bullies, they either ended up getting their asses kicked or learning NOT to act that way. Look at things as time has gone on, not only does it still exist but it' worse now, cyberbullying is just as bad, if not worse except the bullies can hide behind a screen like cowards and the target can't do anything about it, moreover if they stand up for themselves THEY get in trouble, now everyone is weak and soft and the problem didn't actually go away. Nah. If a video tape was paused at the same place over and over again it would slightly degrade the quality at that spot. I know because it's how I used to know where my brother did it...and yes there were normally boobs present LOL.

    • @someonesane
      @someonesane ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@rexwilliams7643 - lol, dang… That’s a lot of rewatching. Still… degradation would only provide proof of multiple viewings of that particular scene. Unless she was the only person who ever rented the video we’d have no way of knowing the degradation occurred specifically because of her. We know, for a fact, that the video was paused there, because Steve said as much. We really can’t say for sure it was Vickie who left it stopped there, however. Being a high school student, it’s unlikely she lives alone (we know one other detail, but for Natalie’s sake I won’t go there, because I don’t want to spoil anything for her, is case she reads this). That being the case however, we can only assume that she, or someone who had access to the video while she had it rented out, was the one who left it stopped at that moment of the movie.

    Man I am always so confused with the mainstream/initial perception of Lucas's choices by most people in this season. Not to mention the complete lack of faith in him! Why would anyone think that he would give up any person, let alone someone directly linked with his friends, to Jason and his frothing at the mouth trigger happy rage?! What in the last 3 seasons would even remotely suggest that? Especially when, in the very same episode, he looks utterly horrified by how the band members got brutalized. And his motives from the beginning of the season go a whole lot deeper, and darker I might add, than some shallow pursuit of popularity. I'm not hating on Natalie or anything like that, I love her and her compassion and empathy even when someone might be pissing her off. That is one of the biggest draws of her channel to me. This has just been a consistent response across the board to Lucas this season as far as I can see and I just ... my boy deserves better man.

      @Goomyx1492 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @NaritaZaraki ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@Goomyx1492 RIGHT?! Caleb really isn't playing that scene ambiguously. His intentions (and his fear) are on his face. I think the misreading comes from the fact that, if you've internalized his story thus far in the season as him pursuing popularity because he doesn't want to be a "loser", then you're already filling-in your expectations for how his arc is gonna go from the established tropes and cliches of the "pursues shallow popularity at the expense of his real friends and crosses a line that really hurts them and must then reevaluate and learn a lesson of humility and the importance of your loser real friends over popularity and works to earn forgiveness". I think some people really were subconsciously expecting him to commit the next beat in that arc. To do something that really screws over his friends since that first argument with Dustin and Mike about his game. It's like knowing the choreography and anticipating the next move. And that expectation, until proven explicitly unfounded, dominates how they read him.
      Sorry this got really ramble-y! ^_^ I just love this boy and I've been half fascinated half frustrated with how he has been perceived in S4.

      I never for a second thought he was going to betray his real friends. He joined the freak hunting party in order to keep track of the basketball team and make sure they didn't go too far with anything. And once he realized they were probably going to go too far, he took his first opportunity to warn his real friends, and arranged for the basketball team to go on a wild goose chase at Hopper's cabin. He was the inside man, simple as. Was obvious to me from the start.

Even down to what you described as fake niceties we do lol. Except people didn't stop to stare at you while you get picked on. They just kept on walking like it's a normal thing. Just like when people ignore the homeless. I'm speaking from experience here since I was the one who got some of the bad treatment. The other thing that was getting sorta normal was the fights that would break out due to jealousy. We didn't have gang fights or racial fights. Oh and there was always that one kid who would pick on anyone for no particular reason except that they were bored. So I feel you Natalie. It also bothers me to see others being mistreated.

  • @moonfisher
    @moonfisher ปีที่แล้ว +9

    You bring up a few times how ridiculous it is that El’s bullying keeps happening in front of such large, complicit groups. I think that was a directorial choice to show how it feels to get bullied at that age rather than a realistic depiction. As a person who would be just a couple years younger than El and grew up in California, I gotta say kids were really ugly to each other in the ‘80s sometimes. And though it would only be a handful of bullies, adolescents developmentally always feels like EVERYONE is watching them and judging them. Poor El.

    One thing you missed Natalie. In season 3 they showed that the Soviets had a machine in the USSR originally. Then they made one in the secret underground facility in Hawkins. Both of those machines opened portals, and the portals were linked to each other (They never explicitly say so on screen, but it's easy to put that together from what few clues are given out). So when Hopper jumped off the catwalk at the end of season 3, he ended up traveling through the portal in Hawkins to the one in the Soviet Union. *That's* how Hopper got there.

      Wait what? The portal’s aren’t linked, the Russian portal never even successfully opened. In season 3 episode 6 Alexei says that they couldn’t open the portal until they came to Hawkins because it was where the gate was opened before. It makes no sense to me why the portals would go from Hawkins to Russia because the whole point was to open a doorway into the upside down.
      I think Hopper just jumped down below the blast and then got picked up by the Russians who were evacuating from the Hawkins base.

    • @tasnica2438

      @@tasnica2438 They explain it as bribes and a ton of smuggling. But that doesn't explain everything in enough detail. It also fails to explain how they're getting away with having so many people in their facility, very few who speak English without an accent, all wearing Soviet uniforms. Back in the 80's you couldn't get away with that without getting called out for it (if not having the FBI/police called on you). Big plot hole if the machines didn't have connecting portals allowing travel directly to and from Hawkins.

    Also, about the D&D Campaign delay request reaction, you've clearly never played D&D before (one of the most common issues with playing a D&D is groups having difficulties in coordinating their schedules, especially for campaigns, which are often played via multiple sessions.
