Bach on a saxophone? What next? Of course J.S. Bach’s music is indestructible. But some arrangements turn out far better than others and manage to do justice to the original. The transition of music for a string instrument to wind does not seem obvious, especially when a saxophone is part of the equation, but Henk van Twillert pulls it off. The baritone saxophone proves itself to be an ideal replacement of the cello. It is not only a similarity in timbre but when played by this most skilful and imaginative Dutch saxophonist the instrument becomes totally adaptable to baroque music.
So should Bach be played on a saxophone? Listen to this release and you will know the answer. It may vary from ‘why not’ to ‘definitely’!

I wonder if Bach imagined that one day a there would come a woodwind with a timbre pleasant and soothing enough to replace the cello, and wrote his music with this idea in mind
I think it sound even better on the bass clarinet.
Yeah. Baritone sax is perfect to play cello parts, because its large range and timbre, very similar to cello. Henk is a very nice inspiration to me. I started playing baritone sax after listening to him. I already play Suite 1 on Alto, but Number 2 is perfect for baritone. Anyway, all of them are wondefull pieces played by him. Thank you very much, Mr Twillert!
JSB himself did a lot of transcription work all his life, so every true musician attempt (like this) he would support, I guess

Tan perfecta la música de Bach que se adapta y se escucha igual de excelsa en el instrumento en que se ejecute, quien llegue a criticar por "X" detalle es porque no conoce las limitaciones y tolerancias de ejecutar una obra de un instrumento a otro para el cual no fue escrita.
Una buona alternativa... eseguita anche molto bene...

rly nice pieces but a bit annoying you can hear the clicks of the instrument
Tried on my alto but need different key since it goes out of range.
The low a’s in the second suite can all be acceptably played an octave up. There are very few in this suite.
@@jacobbass6226 found the English horn version which plays same range.

Those are unavoidable on Sax. It’s part of the sound of the performance.
I would dislike such a thing as well, but in my opinion the Professor does a very, very good job at keeping those noises out of his performance; he plays with very soft fingers. This distraction is on the level of bow clicks and other noises made by e.g. Yo-Yo Ma in his recordings. I understand that it may still be too objectionable to you.
Bach is timeless for its musical genius and ability to transcend instruments... just not the sax apparently. Ive heard better Bach come out of dying cats. No offence to the player or the sax, I have much love for both just not as solo bach pieces I guess.
Phil Tanics I've heard other baris play this and it sounds beautiful and many of Bach's flute and violin pieces are in the alto repertoire. However, I agree that its pretty sloppy. I'm learning the 4th Suite on Bari so that's where I noticed most of the sloppiness. Part of that may be that he arranged it himself so it doesn't sound the same as the originals but I think it's mostly attributed to the player.
First off, how do you know nothing of bari. Any accredited Sax player should be able to make a nice sound off of the four main saxes. And second, what part of this is sloppy.
