I can't believe you analyzed this episode without doing a full plot analysis of Grande Encyclopédie Pratique de Mécanique et d'Electricité and explaining how it's the cornerstone of the RCU.
I loved this first level. I couldn't stop laughing. But I never noticed details like the "Will Hurt" book. I'm going to replay it. Great video! I look forward to the other two.
The three books in America's Favorite Writer's Best-Selling Thrill-ogy seem to be: - A man's life is ripped away. He's out to get justice and the whole city... Will Hurt - Death comes for everyone. That doesn't mean it's painless. Death Will Hurt - The only thing that hurts more than love is loving again. Love Will Hurt
I think one thing that got overlooked this episode is the extra layer of Sam Lake kind of satirically ripping on himself with all the 'hater' quotes. It's actually pretty hilarious.
Oh he does that all the time lol. In AW1 Sarah called out Alan for the abuse of metaphor to the absurd. This whole dlc was an excuse for the community to silence the haters. If you think about it that way at least lol
Haha thanks. Yeah now that we know how this all functions better these little stories are both self contained but can also influence the world in little ways. Mini battles in the war.
@GamingUniversityUoG There were moments during that chapter where I thought they might pull out some awful meme into the dialogue, to really accentuate the terrible fanfic theme, thankfully they didn't but they still encapsulated all the worst aspects of chronically online shippers. 😂 I wish I had played the waitress chapter as an intermission for the Lake House DLC, I'm only halfway through it and it terrifies me, I genuinely had nightmares about the painted slendermen coming out of the walls, so a humorous palate cleamser would have been nice. Alas, I have until Saturday to steele myself, that's when I finish the Lake House.
Additionally to diminishing Scratch's power, Alan also rewrites him as his twin in the episode, so the strong intrinsic link between them is still very much present (in an attempt to not break preestablished rules of the narrative), but introduces a wider margin of separation between him and Scratch.
I like to think it was Alan's way of testing the waters, pun intended, figuring out the way his writing creates the changes. Experiments with tone and genre etc 13 years is a long time between games so he must have been doing something lol
“I HAVE A SHOTGUN!” “Wait, is that a real shotgun?” There’s nothing between this Rose, Her Writer and her automatic 12 gauge. She’s the perfect Mary Sue LMAO.
@@GamingUniversityUoG I'll be honest, I actually liked the combat in Number One Fan more than the entirety of the main game. It felt like Alan Wake 1, where you had massive combat arenas. I love the lore of AW2 but I don't feel like they got the survival-horror combat pacing down perfectly until The Lake House, which was spot on.
My own kneejerk reaction to Rose's secret messages was that the phone-Alan (the one who tells playable-Alan that he gets out and doesn't) has been sending Rose the messages at some point, considering it seems to be Alan from some point of his own subjective future. But time is wonky, it could easily be a past Alan too that just forgot some other iteration of himself got out. Who knows. Regarding the phonecall, one other fun idea (that is not necessarily in line with the previous speculation) would be that he calls himself from "real world" with the Hotline. I get that it is supposedly only bound to the director, but who knows what the situation is with bounding in the future (since the board runs the process right?) where Oldest House is reachable again.
Lore wise I can argue it is the same symbolism as the Raidho Rune. The vehicle one travels on during life that carries us from A to B... But that would be full of Blarney and making stuff up lol
Wake, in an echo seen in either one of AW1's QR codes or Control's AWE (I forgot which), said that his story needed multiple starting places, multiple "springs" I believe he says (I could be misremembering though). I thought this could just be referring to the multiple pasts of the Poet and the Filmmaker, which counts as multiple starting places. But I've wondered if these multiple starting places/springs could have to do with the night springs episodes, in essence suggesting they are more important to his eventual escape than one might think (which is a point you are making here I think).
I still haven't seen anyone talk about the short story you can read in the forest during Number One Fan (the hamfisted Noir tale). I just started playing Max Payne so maybe it's another echo of that, but generally there's usually a reason that kind of thing is included. Or maybe we just don't know the significance yet.
You know this theory is pretty out there, but Alan does meet Rose and go "Wait.. what? I haven't been sending you messages." What if Rose's terrible fan fiction is what created this reality, not Alan? All that's really required for a work of art to have some massive impact in the dark place is a true belief in it, and she truly believes in her obsession. Alan's been shown not to be the only artist to have an impact there so... maybe she made herself the hero? I never really thought about it that way.
Oh no Alan for sure made this. In the intro it very specifically says it's a screenplay by Alan Wake. There are so many explanations for Alan's lack of memory on this. He could have lost it like he did with most of what happened the last 13 years, could have happened at some point in the future, could be someone else, could be another variant
Any chance the bullet is the new form of the bright presence? The idea of the bright presence being repurposed and made true by the clicker. Having both the dark presence and light presence is what makes Wake the archetypical writer (master of many worlds). Would love to hear your thoughts.
I have no clue to be honest. Haven't settled my thoughts in that yet. And the whole master of many worlds is a play on the final phase of the heroes journey. The master of two worlds.
@GamingUniversityUoG While I agree the master of two worlds is in reference to the hero's journey, I think the merging of dark and light is what allows him to transcend and become the master of many worlds similar to Door (albeit I would guess in a different form). I guess this is all speculative for now, but I imagine Wake has a newfound power (maybe greater control of the echoes). What the exact nature is won't be known or confirmed for some time however.
7:14 Was such an amazingly cinematic and perfect dodge! This episode and Rose's fic made me wonder about the subject of plurality and multiple personalities. It felt like Rose wanted Alan and his other, removed personality Scratch, to reintegrate themselves to become whole again. This is also how I've thought of Alan and Scratch in general and as you've also said, multiple aspects of him. "Not so much evil than a little bit of good as well." even if Scratch seems like a villain or like something undesirable it's still needed. Alan needs him back to be who he really is. That was my interpretation of it and I believe Rose would prefer Alan the way he genuinely is, even if he's an asshole, than the fictional perfect version. Fanfics are fun but we don't always really think that's the way reality should be. Just fun what ifs to "see" what would happen and enjoy it vicariously. I guess here I will add that I joke Rose is my spirit animal because I am also an obsessive fan (also AuDHD so... special interests and stuff), except I do it for fictional characters. (and can tell the difference between the real world and fiction). People like me get her, get that fantasy world we can create in our heads to escape to from the real world or just have fun and people like us will never be seen as "normal" by those who don't share our brain type. Not all fans are creepy and stalky, we just love things more intensely than most and unfortunately SOME do go to those extremes because they're just not ok mentally. Also related to your video about artistic inspiration. I've had my own multiverse in my mind with characters that could be borderline a D.I.D. thing, but I am fully aware of what part of me created them, what they represent from me, what specific traits they have from me, etc. From this POV I understand and LOVE what Sam is doing, shifters like Mr. Door and it also influences my own theories. So I do consider Mr. Scratch as one of those personalities of Alan that started developing as an individual and WANTS to be the ONE. The main one, primary one, take his place. I don't know what they'll do with them in the future, if maybe they'll go the way of Alan "integrating" every version into himself or maybe if those versions can have their own life because I'm honestly torn about Zane. I'm like the drunk lady from the plane the first time I saw him "That motherfucker back there is not real!" and don't trust him at all but also I ADORE the character and wouldn't like to hear he's fake or not real at all and kinda want him to be his own self and know more about him. Unless that's a... ahem... Simulacrum and the real one is still around somewhere and behaves the same thing.
About the Alice theory: There was a mention in Clay Steward's files that Barbara was known for her baking. One may ask what Alice has to do with it, but I proceed from the theory that Alice is the self of Barbara Jagger, just as Alan is Zane's. Anyway, I enjoyed this video. You are a real gem of the RCU community.
Number One Fan is so fun but also like what was Alan on? XD like I can see it being influenced by some of Rose’s fanfiction but like it was written by Alan. It does make me wonder what episodes Alan wrote in the original Night Springs series. We’ve read one of his screenplays due to the AWE DLC but I wonder what other episodes he wrote.
I have many doubts about who wears the deer as a mask. Does the deer represent Saga, Alan or Zane? At the end of the main story, a deer helps Saga progress, but Deerfest is always a prelude to tragedy, so another question arises: is the deer good or bad?
In this game the Deer is aligned with Saga for sure. But also for Bright falls as a whole. There is some details about Thomas Learmont being connected to a Hart. Male Deer. He was a 13th century poet who had some weird folklore told about him. Possibly an inspiration for Tom the Poet. I have a video on it if you're interested. Deer is just a symbol though. Not a good or bad thing. I fan guarantee that out of the 80 or so deerfests most of them had no issues at all. If not all of them with the exception of maybe 3
I'm shocked that Alan didn't add some kind of twist ending, I though story had to make narrative sense to work and it works well as story mocking a fanfic but as a Night Springs story it lacks a good twist ending. I suppose the best possible twist on that that would be the best outcome for Alan would be at the end we find the events of the episode was the waitress writing a fan fic and she and when she finishes starts over again, trapping her in her own loop.
It's interesting that for all the fanfiction, self-insert silliness "Number One Fan" has the bare bones of Return inside it. A female protagonist fighting to resuce The Writer will evolve into Saga Anderson investing Alan Wake. The Bad Boy evil twin of The Writer is clearly an early revision of Mr. Scratch from serial killer psychopath wearing Alan's face, to seprated aspect of Alan's psyche that needs reintegration. The Waitress's desire to reunite with her love is an echo of Alan's desire throughout the series to reunite with Alice. As for if Rose's fanfic inspire Alan, or if Alan was inspired by the fanfic; the answer, I think, is yes to both. The Dark Place being nonlinear means chicken and egg scenarios don't apply. You cannot separate inspiration from derivative. I think it's a rather good commentary on the idea that all stories are retellings of previous stories and of the messiness of inspiration vs copying.
Umm, Alan and Alice never meet face to face in any from in the dark place do they? I think the closest is scratch bleeding into the real world. What would happen if the two of them where in the same room in the dark place? My first though would Alan try to make it a heaven for them you know white fences and house full of children and would the dark place allow that? Maybe they end up torturing each other physically in a nightmare world like the Marmonts did. Maybe a bit of column A and column B. Like when Scratch took over Bright Falls at the end of Alen Wake 2 on the surface it wasn't an unpleasant place but feels dark when to talk to the people there and explore town.
No they have never met in the Dark Place as of right now. Alice sees him for sure. Leaving him messages. In a way she is speaking to him but it's a one way street.
Listening to Sam on the state of remedy interview recently I feel the overall story of the RCU may break free from the games, this may all be wrapped up in a movie or movies waaaaay down the line from what he's saying the story's only just getting going, it makes our years of speculation feel like abit of a waste of time now lol
The company who is getting rights to make films / TV shows is helping to bank roll future game projects. In exchange they are allowed to use some of the IPs. We don't have info if they will overlap with these characters or be stand alone narratives set in their RCU. Either way I wouldn't worry too much about it. Every bit of new information helps us speculate more
*3:40 "humor" I would use the words cringe tediousness but to each his own, I guess. Honestly, I expected a lot more from the DLC from this game and I was very disappointed.
Let's be real it is exactly what it is LMAO. But I accept it because this is legit a self insert fan fiction so narratively it makes sense the waitress is written this way
I genuinely do not like the new actress who plays Rose, I feel the character is a huge departure from the original, and regardless of how she's depicted in this DLC, she's still in love with Alan for some reason in the real world, even though in the first game, she just respected him and clearly didn't have a sexual desire for him, it's character assassination, and for some reason now she's southern, I hate it, I really hate her. There are two wolves inside you:
A slightly less handsome twin and a motorcycle
Motorcycle is handsome too 😁
Motorcycle be like rough rough
I'm feeding the motorcycle.

0:25 A new host? Wow, this channel is really opening Doors for you!
6:05 That's the real reason Scratch was pissed in the main game. Alan turned him into a Twilight character in Number One Fan.
I think one thing that got overlooked this episode is the extra layer of Sam Lake kind of satirically ripping on himself with all the 'hater' quotes. It's actually pretty hilarious.

"I have a shotgun!"
"Uhh, is that real?" - Scratch relieves himself
Poor dude lol
I absolutely adored this!
I love the idea of the story itself being the least important part!
Great job, Dean!
Haha thanks. Yeah now that we know how this all functions better these little stories are both self contained but can also influence the world in little ways. Mini battles in the war.
The waitress episode was really fun and ridiculous, very lighthearted for Remedy.
They do this kind of absurd comedy perfectly

100% It feels as though escape was secondary but trying to setup stuff for Return was more important
I like to think it was Alan's way of testing the waters, pun intended, figuring out the way his writing creates the changes. Experiments with tone and genre etc 13 years is a long time between games so he must have been doing something lol
Oh God, M. Night trapped in the dark place
WHAT A TWIST
There are two wolves inside us all. One is the Champion of Light. The other wolf: the Herald of Darkness
Now that tune is going to be in my head all day
“I HAVE A SHOTGUN!”
“Wait, is that a real shotgun?”
There’s nothing between this Rose, Her Writer and her automatic 12 gauge. She’s the perfect Mary Sue LMAO.
The fact that I played as Rose with a shotgun with a crap ton of ammo is just the cherry on top. Don’t know why the other guns are there.
Well in our own fan fics we have infinite ammo right? Running out would just be inconvenient for our power fantasy lol
@@GamingUniversityUoG I'll be honest, I actually liked the combat in Number One Fan more than the entirety of the main game. It felt like Alan Wake 1, where you had massive combat arenas.
