    • @laurigiepmans
      @laurigiepmans 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      The mom takes care of the babies while they need care. That is always better then hand feeding. When kittens grow up they also will separate from the mom in the wild. The point is you keep the mom around long anough to take care of them and when the kittens are old enough to take care of themselfs, then you can separate. And now the mom is spayed so she wont have to go truh this again 😊

    • @MGsubbie
      @MGsubbie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +152

      @@henryettoit897 It's not animal cruelty, not even close. For starters, we as humans domesticated cats, so we have an obligation to take care of them. Leaving a feral mother and kittens outside just means you are increasing the cat population that can breed. Which means even more feral mothers and kittens in turn. They lead harsh lives, kittens born in the wild have much worse survival odds too. Shelters overflow with more animals than people want, so they get euthanized.
      What she does is ensure a good life with a loving family for all the cats, while making sure there aren't even more unwanted cats born.

      Eric- The mama cats perspective is she got caught, put in a strange place with scary two-legged critters who are always messing with her babies, then one day she gets put in a box, poked with a sharp thing and falls asleep. When she wakes up, she's still in a box, goes for a ride in a scary loud moving thing, and gets let out of the box back at her home territory. Whether she realizes the tomcats don't bother her anymore-no one knows. Given that I've seen two neutered tomcats fighting over a spayed female (all had been breeding before) at my parent's farm, they might even go through the motions, just without any kittens resulting.

    • @theincarnationofboredom207
      @theincarnationofboredom207 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True, my unspayed female cat would go up to our male cat and chirp to him, and he'd (cautiously) get into a mating position even though he's neutered, he seemed really unsure of what to do though which was always really funny to watch.

    • @ILuvAyeAye
      @ILuvAyeAye ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elainabaugher7841 I know this is old, but in case anyone is thinking similarly: The kittens are separated from their mom at the same age the kittens would be wandering off to find their own territory in the wild. Of course, every cat is an individual, and can react differently, but most mama cats do not stay in contact with their kittens forever.
      Cats are not like humans - if a mother cat and her son are kept in close quarters (like the same home) and not sterilized, it's common for them to inbreed and have kittens together. Mother cats just don't typically have an understanding of raising kittens long term the way human mothers do. At some point, their child is just another cat, and they tend to fight and have sex like they would with any other cat.

      joueruu You always should return feral cats to their colonies, which is the most humane thing for the cat. Feral cats cannot live in homes. It is very rare that an adult, feral cat can be tamed to live indoors, in a forever home. The kittens can learn to trust humans at their young age - and be tamed. It is the best life for them to get forever homes - and NOT be returned to the streets. The feral mom also has strong bonds with her kitty friends (and some enemies too, I'm sure) on the streets. This is the most humane option for all the animals.

      "Should" be is your opinion. I fully support the trap and release protocol. in our community many of the feral cats eat dry and wet store bought cat food that many kind hearted volunteers pay for and bring to them every single day. We have had issues with off leash dogs in our area that have been killing the wildlife though and other small dogs.

      not every feral cat can become a pet and I am sure cat advocates who are putting so much effort into spaying and neutering have the experience to make the decision if a feral cat is able to become tame or not. If not it would be like forcing a lynx to be a house pet. Not a good idea if all they know and have developed skills for is to be wild. sort of like when a baby duck can become imprinted on a human and think that is mom, a cat can become "imprinted" as a domestic animal or a wild one and those hard wired environmental factors sometimes can not be changed no matter the efforts. It would be more to pacify the humans than to think of the well being of the animals. Again why I said earlier it was COMPASSIONATE of them to let the feral cats back to the safety of what they know rather than stepping in and forcing a wild animal to live as a pet.

    Wow, Hannah, glad you got the mom. We had a feral mom at our old office who was constantly getting into the attic and having kittens. We could not, no matter what we tried, trap the mother. We even tried putting a kitten directly in the trap. Nothing worked, nothing. Eventually the landlord came in and sealed up where she was getting in - it did nothing for the mother and her kittens except to cut them off from people who were trying to help her.

    Hannah, once the kittens have been captured with the mom, do you have the mom tested for FeLv and FIV? If so and you get a positive test result, ethically do you release back into the location found or are they euthanized?
    15 or so years ago I found a very lovable male cat. Scooped him up and took to my vet to be tested, as I had other cats, and no one comes into the house without being tested. He tested positive for FIV.
    My thoughts ran from, do I euthanize him, take him back to where I found him, find a place that will take special needs cats, or find a way to keep him? I boarded him for 2weeks while I built him a room in my shed, fully insulated with a window to the world.
    While I wouldn't set out to home a FIV positive cat, I learned a lot about FIV in the 12 years I had him. My vet was a feline only practitioner and allowed me to keep antibiotics at home for the occasions when he exhibited gingivitis. A little teeth brushing and peroxide with the antibiotics kept him with all his teeth and healthy with minimal trips to the vet.

    • @SBlackmare
      @SBlackmare 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Gunga Dinn
      You can keep FIV+ cats with other cats provided they get along. (See Cole & Marmalade for a typical example.) FIV isn't a good reason for euthanasia any more.
      FeLV+ cats cannot seem to give birth to live kittens, but I'm sure there are exceptions out there. When we see multiple stillbirths it's a red flag - in my area the culprit was often FeLV.
      I've taken in FeLV+ cats so they can't spread it and to give the cats a normal life and peaceful death. The vet I work with has several, the oldest being around 10. Mine have lasted several years beyond diagnosis, so I no longer think of them as temporary!

    • @gungadinn
      @gungadinn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      SBlackmare+
      My issue was with the two male cats I already had. Both were very possessive of me and would not accept a full grown cat in THEIR house.
      I had two college girls that lived a few doors away, left their cat behind. He was such a sweet cat, that I took him in. The boys after a few months indoctrination would gang up on him biting his butt. I re homed him with my parents.
      I see way too many special needs cats in my local animal shelter. Most are FIV positive males. I've only seen 1 female cat with FIV.
      After having a FIV kitty, provided I had the space, I wouldn't be adverse to a foundling with FIV. FeLv, because of the contagious nature of the disease, I can't or won't do.

      My grandmother has 8 cats, 5 of which have FIV. well no, one is them is only a carrier. She had four kittens, one of which died due to the condition unfortunately. all of her kittens got it. I'm not sure how the oldest cat got it, but it might of been because the mother and him didn't exactly get along too well in the beginning and she might of infected him, but I'm unsure.

      TheKoriCode. Snap test run about $15-25 a pop. They have to be snap tested before they can be adopted out. Usually they just test mom. If it comes back positive then kittens are tested after they are old enough to not need moms milk.

His name is Sinclair of course! Then last fall we found a friendly mama kitty visiting our outside food dish for the neighborhood kitties and she let us bring her in and help her birth and care for her kittens. We homed those kittens and got her spayed she is now our little Biscuit! definitelynotabby still no. Cats most definately do not live in colonies under any situation, Warrior cats is a fictional story.

      @@blobbertmcblob4888 are you stupid. Who TF brought up a kids book. Feral cats live in packs like wolves and lions. You can even see the other cats in the colony in the video when they were trapping the momma cat. I hope this was sarcasm.

    once I have the place I would love to foster kittens. Wish I could now but my dorm room isn't really suitable yet. But I'm having plans of moving into an appartement in the next year. And that would be better :)

      Marias Project Similar situation here. We aren’t aloud by our landlord to foster any animals. ( me and my sister wanted to foster puppies a couple years ago) but to no luck. And which is a good thing most of the feral cats where I live are spayed and neutered!

      It's mentally and emotionally exhausting. Its worth it in the long run but it can break you heart when you lose one, and it will happen eventually. Most kittens have parasites too passed on from mom so deworm deworm deworm!

    When I found 4 kittens alone I looked every where and I even waited for the mom for a couple of hours but she was no where to be found. So now I have 2 kittens and my cousin has 2 kittens
