We had a momma cat who was the bane of my existence. She REFUSED to be trapped. 5 years we were trying to catch her and we tried all baits, even our tried and trusted KFC extra-tasty crispy chicken. One morning I was getting ready for clinic and happened to walk out on the porch where she was asleep in the chair. I threw that blanket over her, grabbed her, and got her in a carrier. I was so happy and to catch her on surgery day was the best. After she was healed and released, she was such a different girl. Still didn't want to be an inside kitty but no longer wandered and wanted some social interaction. She lived another 5 years outside before she passed from old age.
i had a cat and we named her mama cat because she had like 5 litters each year 9 or 10 kittens and all the kittens got good homes but the animal shelter said that she was feral but she wasn't but they put her down anyways
I personally don't like having my cats nuteured because I feel like it's taking the right away from them to have kids. I know it's stupid but still I feel bad. My dad's making my 9 month old kitten get spayed 😢
A Kids View there are so many animals in shelters that are overcrowded, the only humane thing to do is to bring down the population so we can care for the animals that are already alive. Spaying/neutering is the best way to be a responsible pet owner.
Fun Fact: TNR is especially important in Scotland to preserve the Scottish Wild Cat as a species and prevent it from breeding with feral or community cats.

My cat was a stray/community cat. A friend of mine asked me to take her because the housing complex wouldn’t allow them to feed the cats anymore. He already had reached his limit of pets he could have. I couldn’t stand by and watch her get euthanized if she was still there by winter ( which is what was going to happen). So we took her in. Best decision I ever made! She is the best kitty ever!! I love her to pieces❤️🐾🐈

I work for a hospital which is in a semi rural area, so we get a lot if cats which are attracted by the rodents. They would end up getting pregnant and having multiplr litters. For a while the administration was capturing the cats and setting them free off campus.... only to have that empty space fill up with other strays and ferals. The administration met with the Kitty Counsel, a group of nurses who set up feeding for the cats and came to an agreement: TNR. Now we have a colony of spayed/neutered cats roaming the hospital, and no kittens in years!
When I was little, my dad and I got one of those traps and we were able to sterilize 6 cats. We ended up adopting one. We named him Riley and he is completely jet-black.
You are an earth angel to cats everywhere. Now I know what to do with a stray and her kittens living in my barn. They will all be getting fixed, dewormed etc. We will feed them and they can live outside live on a farm by the woods) catching mice as well. God Bless You
Fun fact: a new law in South Australia was introduced this year so that people have to desex and microchip their pet cats and dogs to help prevent so many animals ending up in shelters each year. :)
@@Hazelcloudy yes but there are a number of "illegal" TNR groups looking after their feral puds. I know a man and his neighbour in a fb group who on their rural properties have over 50 feral cats living there. he has 20 in the house and more in the fields lol
I have “community cats”, they have name tags so they are someone’s pet. My dad built a cat house with a heating pad for the winter. They are two males and two kittens out there. And I wish that they can just stay inside where it’s safe and warm. Especially the cute kittens.
Many cats with nametags are indoor/outdoor cats so they have access to warmth and safety. Still, your dad is a great guy, taking care of those who do not.
I recently rescued 6 small kittens that I found next to a dumpster. Your videos really helped me out when I was figuring out how to properly raise them.
As well as the risk of pyometra specifically, which is a risk people don’t realize is real, increases every single time a cat goes into heat (which is as often as every 4 weeks in sunny months!), and shows very few symptoms until it is already life threatening. Pyometra is terrifying, a condition where pus builds in the uterus and poisons other organs in the body until they shut down, and can show no symptoms at all in some cats, but is always, always fatal without treatment. Treatment is just... spaying. They just remove the uterus. Spaying a cat removes the risk from ever existing in the first place as well (except in rare cases of stump pyometra if not all of the reproductive system is removed and some tissue remains). Easiest fix in the world to something so, so tragic, but there isn’t a lot of education on this risk, or a lot of resources for people who are financially struggling, and think that pregnancy is the only risk of an intact cat.
I'm having this problem in my area. I did the TNR, and with the help of a loving awesome Veterinarian, his equally amazingly awesome loving assistant and a cat rescue organisation, we were able to spay/ neuter and find homes for a lot of the kittens. I adopted a lot too. Most of my cats came from that colony, including a paralyzed kitten. I only had a couple of cats to go. The mama cat and two others. When I finally was able to trap her, she got out. I went back so many times, but she avoided the trap. Then unforeseen circumstances happened, and my car died, the vet assistant got ill. So I wasn't able to feed them, let alone trap them. When I was finally able to go back, there was at least 15 cats or more when there was only three. The pizza place where they're at is a dumping ground for cats. People dump cats there and it's really hard to keep up. Those people make me sick, and most of the ignorant people in my town and the surrounding towns don't know what spay and neuter is or how to properly take care of their furry family member. It's so very frustrating, but I'm not giving up.
Thank you for all you do. It’s so sad about Butter. I know you did all you could. At least he had someone taking care of him and trying to keep him warm when he passed. Some small comfort for him is a small comfort for us.
I live in an apartment right in front of a forest full of cats. There have been people going in there seeing the cats, feeding them, and possibly trying to capture some to save or to adopt. Sadly, on the right of the forest, many trees were cut down because of complaints. Not sure what complaints, but it ended up having trees removed. The good part is that it wasn't at the entrance of the forest, which if you go behind the apartment I live in you will see a hole kind of thing made of branches and stuff where you enter. There also used to be a man who locals called "a hobo" Staying there slightly deep into the forest in a tent. Now there are very few cats on the forest. There are definitely still 'community' cats roaming around the streets. I know, I've seen many during the morning when I went to school. Sadly I am only 12 and cannot afford all the necessities to catch and save these cats. I kind of even wish that I could call *Hope for Paws*, but my parents wouldn't let me anyways. Plus, I don't know if they could come to Texas. ♡
One of my cats was a stray, I used to feed her and when she got pregnant I brought her inside to have her kittens, I decided to officially adopt her after that and I even kept one of the kittens as well, the other two were happily adopted by my cousins, luckily they’re all safe and thriving ☺️ I’m so thankful that they’re in my life
I've been participating in the the TNR program in my city. We've got tons of ferals. Luna is lovely 😍 our kitties are buck wild. Once Ina while I find a tame one. I want to keep them all. We've got a huge old man who I call Grandpa. He's so sweet ❤️

My favorite part of TNR is the R. I love seeing healthy ear tipped cats run out of the trap back to their homes. Thank you Hannah for making this video and for reducing all the future kittens in this neighborhood by making sure they are never born to suffer like Butter.
When I was 9 I went outside at my cousins house. 2 feral cats were outside. No one could pet them. But I went up to one and pet it. It didn’t bite me, it rubbed up against me. Later the other one did the same. I have no idea what gender they were or if they were neutered but I think they were a boy and a girl. I loved them so much and hey were my first experience with cats. I will always love them and I hope they are still alive today. 9 months ago I finally got a beautiful kitty of my own at an animal shelter. She was ten months old and already neutered. That has inspired me to foster kittens when I grow up and after watching this video, I have decided I want to be like you and save the lives of kittens however I can. Thank you for inspiring me!

I had 2 cats similiar to Luna, they weren't spayed but they were my cats, thought they didn't want to get in the house for more than a entire day. They were in my garden and I was 10 day away from their neuter operation when they disappeared... it's been a year and a half and I'd like to see them in the future. I live in a town of farmers and alot of farmers in my town don't like cats. I rescued my dear cat from a farmers trap and she was left there for days and they took the trap away months later so they were planning on leaving it without checking. I also rescued 3 kittens someone abandoned with a note and some milk, next to a dangerous river, a highway, and in the middle of the desert. I also watched a small kitten pass away because her mother wouldn't let me help her. Anyway my reason for all this is I ENJOY you bringing awareness to all that you do and helping me with so many of cats.
I love this! Gonna share it for sure :) In our area can be hard to deal with cats/kittens like this as there is no TNR clinic within an hour's drive of the town and no dedicated team of people to trap and transport the cats, although one of the 3 local rescues are currently trying to set this system up even if it means going to the city. The local vets don't make it easy - you have to do the full vaccination (over a 3 week period), deworm, deflea and there is no discount involved so even if there are people who would like to help they aren't willing to go $400-$600 in per cat who they would also have to house for that time and so it just doesn't get done. The local vets have also scolded people for saying they would return a cat to their community where they're fed/sheltered and refuse to ear-tip. It is really frustrating and I just don't understand!! I have worked with a TNR organisation in the past in another city and it was great! For $60 per cat they for Rabies vaccinated, sterilised and ear tipped. As long as they had somewhere to go for a day to recover anyone could trap and get it done. We're behind the times in this small town and something has to change!!

I have a pretty crucial question. If one were to do TNR, how do you know the feral cat has not recently given birth to a litter of kittens, and is going scavenging/hunting? If you were to take her away would she be able to find her litter again, and would they be ok? (If they were old enough for her to leave them for a bit anyway) thank you for your pure heart and the inspiration and influence you give to others, and all the good advice you have. 💜

I rescued my kitten from the streets when she was under 2 weeks old, she was super shy and jumped at every little noise. She also had ringworm, fleas and she was underfed, but with love and the right care, she is now living a healthy, happy life!
I absolutely love what you do, and am inspired. One day when I have a vehicle and am able to do the kind of work you do I'll feel so fulfilled. Thank you. You're making so many little kitties lived so much better.
Kitten Lady, what do you do when the people that feed the cats decide that the cats they’re feeding are “theirs” and don’t want an outsider to take a cat from the colony? I had a person that was feeding a colony that I met through a local vet. I explained that I was looking for a young cat that was receptive to being homed. This person got extremely protective of the cats and told me that she’d be the one deciding if I got a cat and which one. Needless to say, I said, thanks but no thanks, I’ll find one on my own. A couple of weeks later a friend informed me that there was a litter where he worked, bring a trap, as they’re wild. She was wild, and it’s taken a while to get her to trust me. Now I can’t go anywhere in the house without her following me around.
Maybe she just wanted to make sure the cat was going to a good home. Not everyone wants a cat to give it a good home. There are a lot of sickos out there abusing cats using them as bait or in crush videos.
@@TheGrkgal+ If I were wanting to harm a/the cat, I could have easily just trapped one from the colony when I first saw them, I didn't. The SPCA is a few miles away and appears to place the cats they have. I had one from them that was a special needs cat that cost me more than a lot of new cars. This person would rather these cats be feral, than being a house cat. I have a friend that does cat rescue a few states away. He runs into this personality with numerous cat colony feeders. It's a control thing.
Gunga Dinn I am a colony feeder. I have to say that although I would be thrilled if someone wanted to adopt one of my colony cats, I also would be very careful of which cat and would want to be sure that the person understood what they were getting into. These cats are our pets just as much as any indoor pets. We love them and want the best for them. And we know their personalities. That being said, there is a way to have a conversation with someone interested in giving a cat a home. I always explain that how the cat behaves with me is not how it will be have with them. That building trusts will likely take years with an adult colony cat and that they will likely never be a typical house cat if rehomed as an adult. I have found homes for 3 of my small colony. They were not the three that were most social with me. But they were the ones that I could tell from experience would have the best chance of thriving in a home. George, the most social with me and a gorgeous cat that many people would want based on looks, was actually the most feral of the colony. I would have felt unsafe placing him in a home. When he showed signs of wanting to transition to inside, we offered him a home with us. But we are very feral experienced and know how to handle him. He loves me so much. But he has still bitten or scratched me multiple times out of fear. Vet care requires sedation and there are limited treatment option due to him not being able to be handled. This would be too much to ask your average cat person to take on. So while yes, some colony caretakers are controlling, object to rehoming, and sometimes even tnr, they are not the norm. Most of us just have to balance what the person wants with what is in the cat's best interest. We are their voice. Of course, if you had come to me and I did not have an appropriate match for you, I would have just helped you find one elsewhere. 🙂
I'd also like to point out that even though you may have a colony cat's best interests at heart, trying to conform them to an indoor life with people can be extremely traumatizing. I'm glad that your cat was able to be socialized and now enjoys life with you, but imagine all those terrified days she had to go through before that happened? Most cats living on the street are perfectly content, especially if they have a caretaker. Hannah even did a video on this very topic, and I would suggest watching it.
Gunga Dinn if you want to adopt a cat I highly suggest the SPCA because you will actually be saving a life, since they euthanize a TON of cats each year. Colony cats are already being taken care of, but cats in an open intake shelter like the SPCA have their days literally numbered. By adopting a cat from a shelter, you allow the SPCA to find/save one more cat to put up for adoption, that would’ve otherwise been euthanized due to space issues.
I am so thankful this program and all you do to save cats. I have a feral kitten that I tried to catch in a cat carrier. She was in the carrier, but she escaped because I wasn't fast enough to get the latch closed. I had been working weeks to socialize her feeding her every day. She loves to be petted, and rubs against our legs, rolls over and plays. I will try again tomorrow night, as Thurs is TNR days in our town. I may have to get a trap and try again. Thanks for your tips. I have already fallen in love with this precious kitty about 6 months old.
💗This week my mom and I trapped 3 feral kittens, and there is one more in the litter. They were at a restaurant in my town and we know the owners. The kittsns are around 8 weeks old so we have them in our care and we have the momma scheduled to be spayed
I have two TNR cats that showed up. A female about 6 years ago and an orange male last year. They are inside/outside cats, they are in at night and get to go out in the morning. Once I feed them in the evening they stay in, no free feeding, a little breakfast and nothing until their main meal in the early evening. I have another little tuxedo TNR kitten that started hanging around, maybe 6 months old. I'm worming him and then will try to introduce him to the others and see if he can fit in. Winter is coming on and he will not survive out there. Keep up the good work, keep up the education and show people why and how to help. Best, Roy
You're doing such a great thing here! There needs to be more people like you doing this. I only came across your channel a few weeks ago, and I've watched quite a few of your videos now. I live in a pretty crappy neighborhood in the UK, where there are so many stray cats. It's really upsetting to see them with no home and nobody to care for them. I regularly feed the cats in my area, but I want to do more for them now, especially since watching your videos and seeing the amazing work you do for cats and kittens. I'm definitely going to try trapping and neutering the stray cats I've been feeding after seeing this. 🐱🥫🐈
Kittens born on the streets have a high mortality rate, especially during the winter, not enough people to take them in while they're young and able to be socialized ... TNR (trap, neuter, release) the parents is the most humane solution, and I'm glad for cat rescuers who help do this.
I have a TNR cat, she showed up with fresh color in one ear and stitches in the other. I had never seen her before and she acted like a pet. It was weird because the usual apartment outdoor cats kick out any strays and she acted like a pet. She was already liter box trained and wanted inside. The local shelter that does TNR for my area said she wasn't registered as a pet so I gave her a good home.
Nothing wrong with that. That is exactly why Luna was left in her neighborhood. Cats get adopted off the street all the time. Congratulations on your new family member.

I wish we had someone like you around here. There are no programs here to help with low/no cost TNR. I have a friend who does it but only in another county. So I'm stuck with a large and ever growing colony I am trying to feed along with my own 18 cats and being unemployed, it is a difficult task. I can only do so much but getting the queen of the colony fixed would be a huge help. She has another 3 babies out there now and I have 2 on my chest right now from one of her female kittens that also needs to be fixed. It's just overwhelming. Having a huge heart for these babies is a burden and a blessing. I need help for these cats!

This is an older video but I've just found it. I've trapped 21 cats in my neighborhood since March. Most of them have come from two females, both of whom I've managed to TNR. And all of them still come to my front porch to eat just about every night. They're all getting back to a healthy weight and it's good to see. I learned a few things though! I didn't know about putting the food at the front of the trap, and I've just been using tuna in water. I'm scheduled at the Humane Society for another few cats next week so I'm going to put these techniques to use.
@@aprillynne7828 I usually trap them the night before to make sure they don't have any food before their surgery. That's what the Humane Society recommended. Since I put food out around 6pm, that means it's about 5 to 6pm the night before. I use a Wyze camera and a battery pack to monitor the trap, and once I've caught one, I bring it inside and keep them in my spare bedroom overnight. The trap is covered with a large towel to minimize disruptions for the cat. A few times when I don't catch any at night, however, I've tried again at 6am or so the morning of, so they only end up in the trap for an hour or so before I take them to the Humane Society or a local vet that morning for a 730 to 8am drop-off. I have found that once I pick them up in the afternoon after surgery, they're still fairly groggy, and I can transfer them to a larger cat carrier that is more comfortable for them (and clean). The trap usually ends up getting soiled the day of. Then I keep them overnight again to monitor their post-surgical status, give them a nice can of Fancy Feast, and release them the next morning if they have recovered well. Knock on wood, none have ever had any recovery issues. I'm up to 35 cats trapped so far, and I'm going to try to do a few new ones who have showed up in my neighborhood after the 1st.
@@brassmule You are amazing. I just had an epic fail on my first attempt at TNR. My feral is actually pretty close to me. He hisses and bites, so I respect his fear, but I’ve made a home for him inside my home. He comes and goes via a cat door and his area is caged off. I set the trap and he went right in. But I freaked out cause I just couldn’t stand the thought of him being in there for 13 hours. I was so worried about if he would go in, I didn’t consider if he did. I released him and he ran out the cat door. Hoping he comes back tonight. It’s so rainy out. 😞 Shot in the dark, but I’m going to put the trap out at 5:30am and see if he will go back in. I’m really feeling bummed. Super sad. I failed him. I hope I can get it right. I hope he gives me another chance. I’ve done so much work and research and I just messed it up. Ugh. So happy to hear your story! How do you handle them being locked up so long. I just can’t handle that part! My feral is a big boy, too. Thank you so much for sharing. My daughter called the local emergency vet and they said it would be okay to do but not much longer than what he would have been in there. I just decided I couldn’t emotionally stand it. 😭 He deserves better. 🙏🏼❤️
@@aprillynne7828 Yes, the first feral I trapped fought hard to get out initially, and it hit me pretty hard. I decided that I knew the cat would be safe, even if the cat didn't know that, and what I was doing for it was for its own good. Fewer ferals is better for everyone, in the end. Most of them were fine - some of the meanest looking tom cats barely made a peep the entire time. A couple did try their best the entire time to claw their way out. But I knew they were safe. It sounds like you've spooked yours big time. I wouldn't try to trap him again for a while. A couple of mine would never go near the traps but I was eventually able to gain their trust enough to snatch and grab them. They all eventually forgave me! Give your guy a week or more of normal activity with no trap, if you can, before you try again, and maybe remove food the morning of so he's extra hungry. You're doing the right thing, and a little short term suffering for him in a safe environment will be worth it in the end.
I take care of a cat colony in my neighborhood. the cats are owned by one of the people in my neighborhood and I can't spay / neuter them unfortunately. I did however name one of the kittens that were born this year Butter after the kitten that died in you video. Safe to say he's doing great and is on his way to being socialized! 😊
We have a mother kitten and two baby kittens underneath our cabin at Nature's getaway RV Park in Pennsylvania we're trying to trap them and hopefully get them to an animal rescue and get them a good family hoping to get them somewhere cheap to fix them and get everything done thank you so much this helps a lot and thank you for helping all those cats and kittens
Really need this video There's a local kitty that me and my friends are trying to save we know what to do when we get her (we will take her to a local vet for a check-up, the vet often finds good homes for homeless cats, she even adopted one herself) but the catching is really hard since she's roaming around school etc. Her name's Tosia she's a brown tabby around 4-5 months old. Her owners kicked her out of their house around a month ago and moved to a different city. So far we're trying to feed her to build trust and we dont want her to starve in the winter. We have a team of 5 people (2 are backup) and 3 of us have cats
We also have another problem :/ Me and another friend got really sick this Thursday (it's Saturday now) and the other one went to school There's this kid that also noticed Tosia (a few days later than us) and he decided that he will catch her HIMSELF without anything to transport the poor cat in, he told my friend about that, she didn't tell him anything about our plans but he threatened her that if we "mess" with his plan he'll call the shelter to catch Tosia (yeah... that's just a greaaat idea around Christmas season, suuure) (he once called animal control on the same friend he was talking to when she was taking care of her mother's friend's dog because ""the dog didn't have any grass") and he said that he found a family for her (We really don't trust him). I only learned about this when she came home from school, the guy chased Tosia and she ran away (now we may not find her and we know that we can't feed her near school). When i'll be back i'm going to talk with him
Yo UPDATE we've got her, Tosia is safe! we just have to find a house for her! She came to us herself, she's a brave little kitty. She used to be scared of us a week ago, she lets us pet her now
Yeah, i'm really happy that she isn't going to be afraid of that kid She didn't trust us at all at first. She's staying at my friends house till we find the right home (the same friend who had the cat transporter), she's doing pretty well with the friend's two other cats.
My friend thinks it's cruel to spay/neuter animals, I tried to tell her that it's actually better for them and that way too many kittens and puppies are living on the streets (even bunnies) and she yelled at me for getting my three indoor/outdoor cats spayed....thank you for doing this ♥️
There was actually a feral Mom cat that has had 2 litters in a large bush around my backyard, I got one litter of 4 kittens a home, and actually took one myself, we got mama to cat house on the kings and we're trying to find the dad. Sadly, the last litter was only one kitten, and I was only 11, but I had fed mama cat when she had her first litter, so I did the same with the second one, feeding mama close to her kitten, to make sure she wasn't far from her kitten. The kitten was vocal and growing so I thought she was ok, but it was so soon after her first litter, I should've known there would've been some genetic problems, and I didn't wanna put mama and her kitten through the stressful process of getting them to a shelter while the kitten was so young. But out of the blue one day, when I went out to check on them secretly, and silently as I could, I noticed how silent it was outside, and when I checked, the kitten was lifeless on thed ground, it looked as if he/she passed in her/his sleep, but I sobbed about it for so long. The situation was taken care of, but I can't deal with the fact that a kitten died and it was all my fault. Sorry to be such a Debby downer, but I wanted to help emphasize the importance of TNR as well. Please spay and neuter your pets. And any other feral you might find. -🐾
Please don't blame yourself for the kitten's death. It may not have been able to live for internal problems that it had before birth. I had a litter of two kittens from my own house cat, that nursed well and looked wonderfully healthy - and one morning I found them both dead, with no sign of why. My vet, who was very good, told me that it was known to happen, like SIDS, but no one had found out the cause yet. Please give yourself credit for doing the best you knew at the time, and accept my congratulations for seeing that the mother cat was taken care of.

And good for you to be checking on the kittens and mother, and even taking them to the vet to make sure it wasn't anything severe. the world is lucky to have such caring people like you in the world.
This is so valuable. I hope your video and all other videos out there encourage people to give it a try. Just feeding feral/stray cats is not ideal. It may make you feel good, and it may help cats in the short term, but we're not solving any problems doing that. We have to go the extra mile and do TNRs.
When I moved into my new house , a group of stray kittens about a year old had been hanging around already with no human interaction before and one of them, a black cat with green eyes, immediately came up to me and demanded to be pet and she now comes inside every day and just falls asleep on someone's lap. Most of the other kittens keep their distance except for one who I call Oliver, who was very skittish at first and is still skittish refusing to let me pet him but he loves to talk to me a lot and peek into my house when I open the door but won't come in. I live in a remote place and there barley any people.
Here in Australia i don’t see meny stray dogs and cats and I have never seen a cat Conley in my area but I still like watching these videos just in case! If I ever do find a cat Conley I will definitely do TNR on them.

Just so you know, new laws have been introduced this year (in SA only I think) where all pet cats and dogs must be desexed in an attempt to lower the rate of animals ending up in shelters. I think it's pretty cool and will help to lower the number of cats getting killed in shelters, too, which is pretty great :)
The legality of TNR in Australia is questionable. Our feral cat problem is monumental and the cats cause irreversible damage to the already threatened native wildlife. I have volunteered at a native animal rescue and cat shelter, and neither organisation is legally allowed to release cats (or foxes) back into the wild. If you want to help Australian cats, the best thing you can do is volunteer and donate to shelters, and foster cats while permanent homes are found for them. Some organisations like SAFE focus on rehabilitating "community" cats and/or ferals, which 100% saves lives!

We had a momma cat who was the bane of my existence. She REFUSED to be trapped. 5 years we were trying to catch her and we tried all baits, even our tried and trusted KFC extra-tasty crispy chicken. One morning I was getting ready for clinic and happened to walk out on the porch where she was asleep in the chair. I threw that blanket over her, grabbed her, and got her in a carrier. I was so happy and to catch her on surgery day was the best. After she was healed and released, she was such a different girl. Still didn't want to be an inside kitty but no longer wandered and wanted some social interaction. She lived another 5 years outside before she passed from old age.
i had a cat and we named her mama cat because she had like 5 litters each year 9 or 10 kittens and all the kittens got good homes but the animal shelter said that she was feral but she wasn't but they put her down anyways

A Kids View there are so many animals in shelters that are overcrowded, the only humane thing to do is to bring down the population so we can care for the animals that are already alive. Spaying/neutering is the best way to be a responsible pet owner.

My cat was a stray/community cat. A friend of mine asked me to take her because the housing complex wouldn’t allow them to feed the cats anymore. He already had reached his limit of pets he could have. I couldn’t stand by and watch her get euthanized if she was still there by winter ( which is what was going to happen). So we took her in. Best decision I ever made! She is the best kitty ever!! I love her to pieces❤️🐾🐈

I work for a hospital which is in a semi rural area, so we get a lot if cats which are attracted by the rodents. They would end up getting pregnant and having multiplr litters. For a while the administration was capturing the cats and setting them free off campus.... only to have that empty space fill up with other strays and ferals. The administration met with the Kitty Counsel, a group of nurses who set up feeding for the cats and came to an agreement: TNR. Now we have a colony of spayed/neutered cats roaming the hospital, and no kittens in years!

I have “community cats”, they have name tags so they are someone’s pet. My dad built a cat house with a heating pad for the winter. They are two males and two kittens out there. And I wish that they can just stay inside where it’s safe and warm. Especially the cute kittens.

And by sterilizing the cats, you're reducing their risk of cancer, by removing certain parts that are subscebtible to it.
As well as the risk of pyometra specifically, which is a risk people don’t realize is real, increases every single time a cat goes into heat (which is as often as every 4 weeks in sunny months!), and shows very few symptoms until it is already life threatening. Pyometra is terrifying, a condition where pus builds in the uterus and poisons other organs in the body until they shut down, and can show no symptoms at all in some cats, but is always, always fatal without treatment. Treatment is just... spaying. They just remove the uterus. Spaying a cat removes the risk from ever existing in the first place as well (except in rare cases of stump pyometra if not all of the reproductive system is removed and some tissue remains). Easiest fix in the world to something so, so tragic, but there isn’t a lot of education on this risk, or a lot of resources for people who are financially struggling, and think that pregnancy is the only risk of an intact cat.

I'm having this problem in my area. I did the TNR, and with the help of a loving awesome Veterinarian, his equally amazingly awesome loving assistant and a cat rescue organisation, we were able to spay/ neuter and find homes for a lot of the kittens. I adopted a lot too. Most of my cats came from that colony, including a paralyzed kitten. I only had a couple of cats to go. The mama cat and two others. When I finally was able to trap her, she got out. I went back so many times, but she avoided the trap. Then unforeseen circumstances happened, and my car died, the vet assistant got ill. So I wasn't able to feed them, let alone trap them. When I was finally able to go back, there was at least 15 cats or more when there was only three. The pizza place where they're at is a dumping ground for cats. People dump cats there and it's really hard to keep up. Those people make me sick, and most of the ignorant people in my town and the surrounding towns don't know what spay and neuter is or how to properly take care of their furry family member. It's so very frustrating, but I'm not giving up.

Yeah, I hope Hannah pops around to say hi every now and again.
I live in an apartment right in front of a forest full of cats. There have been people going in there seeing the cats, feeding them, and possibly trying to capture some to save or to adopt. Sadly, on the right of the forest, many trees were cut down because of complaints. Not sure what complaints, but it ended up having trees removed. The good part is that it wasn't at the entrance of the forest, which if you go behind the apartment I live in you will see a hole kind of thing made of branches and stuff where you enter. There also used to be a man who locals called "a hobo" Staying there slightly deep into the forest in a tent.
Now there are very few cats on the forest. There are definitely still 'community' cats roaming around the streets. I know, I've seen many during the morning when I went to school. Sadly I am only 12 and cannot afford all the necessities to catch and save these cats. I kind of even wish that I could call *Hope for Paws*, but my parents wouldn't let me anyways. Plus, I don't know if they could come to Texas.

One of my cats was a stray, I used to feed her and when she got pregnant I brought her inside to have her kittens, I decided to officially adopt her after that and I even kept one of the kittens as well, the other two were happily adopted by my cousins, luckily they’re all safe and thriving ☺️ I’m so thankful that they’re in my life
I've been participating in the the TNR program in my city. We've got tons of ferals. Luna is lovely 😍 our kitties are buck wild. Once Ina while I find a tame one. I want to keep them all. We've got a huge old man who I call Grandpa. He's so sweet ❤️

When I was 9 I went outside at my cousins house. 2 feral cats were outside. No one could pet them. But I went up to one and pet it. It didn’t bite me, it rubbed up against me. Later the other one did the same. I have no idea what gender they were or if they were neutered but I think they were a boy and a girl. I loved them so much and hey were my first experience with cats. I will always love them and I hope they are still alive today. 9 months ago I finally got a beautiful kitty of my own at an animal shelter. She was ten months old and already neutered. That has inspired me to foster kittens when I grow up and after watching this video, I have decided I want to be like you and save the lives of kittens however I can. Thank you for inspiring me!

I live in a town of farmers and alot of farmers in my town don't like cats.
I rescued my dear cat from a farmers trap and she was left there for days and they took the trap away months later so they were planning on leaving it without checking.
I also rescued 3 kittens someone abandoned with a note and some milk, next to a dangerous river, a highway, and in the middle of the desert.
I also watched a small kitten pass away because her mother wouldn't let me help her.
Anyway my reason for all this is I ENJOY you bringing awareness to all that you do and helping me with so many of cats.

In our area can be hard to deal with cats/kittens like this as there is no TNR clinic within an hour's drive of the town and no dedicated team of people to trap and transport the cats, although one of the 3 local rescues are currently trying to set this system up even if it means going to the city. The local vets don't make it easy - you have to do the full vaccination (over a 3 week period), deworm, deflea and there is no discount involved so even if there are people who would like to help they aren't willing to go $400-$600 in per cat who they would also have to house for that time and so it just doesn't get done. The local vets have also scolded people for saying they would return a cat to their community where they're fed/sheltered and refuse to ear-tip. It is really frustrating and I just don't understand!! I have worked with a TNR organisation in the past in another city and it was great! For $60 per cat they for Rabies vaccinated, sterilised and ear tipped. As long as they had somewhere to go for a day to recover anyone could trap and get it done. We're behind the times in this small town and something has to change!!

I have a pretty crucial question. If one were to do TNR, how do you know the feral cat has not recently given birth to a litter of kittens, and is going scavenging/hunting? If you were to take her away would she be able to find her litter again, and would they be ok? I rescued my kitten from the streets when she was under 2 weeks old, she was super shy and jumped at every little noise. She also had ringworm, fleas and she was underfed, but with love and the right care, she is now living a healthy, happy life!

Kitten Lady, what do you do when the people that feed the cats decide that the cats they’re feeding are “theirs” and don’t want an outsider to take a cat from the colony?
I had a person that was feeding a colony that I met through a local vet. I explained that I was looking for a young cat that was receptive to being homed. This person got extremely protective of the cats and told me that she’d be the one deciding if I got a cat and which one. Needless to say, I said, thanks but no thanks, I’ll find one on my own.
A couple of weeks later a friend informed me that there was a litter where he worked, bring a trap, as they’re wild. She was wild, and it’s taken a while to get her to trust me. Now I can’t go anywhere in the house without her following me around.
Maybe she just wanted to make sure the cat was going to a good home. Not everyone wants a cat to give it a good home. There are a lot of sickos out there abusing cats using them as bait or in crush videos.

If I were wanting to harm a/the cat, I could have easily just trapped one from the colony when I first saw them, I didn't.
The SPCA is a few miles away and appears to place the cats they have. I had one from them that was a special needs cat that cost me more than a lot of new cars.
This person would rather these cats be feral, than being a house cat.
I have a friend that does cat rescue a few states away. He runs into this personality with numerous cat colony feeders. It's a control thing.
Gunga Dinn I am a colony feeder. I have to say that although I would be thrilled if someone wanted to adopt one of my colony cats, I also would be very careful of which cat and would want to be sure that the person understood what they were getting into.
These cats are our pets just as much as any indoor pets. We love them and want the best for them. And we know their personalities.
That being said, there is a way to have a conversation with someone interested in giving a cat a home. I always explain that how the cat behaves with me is not how it will be have with them. That building trusts will likely take years with an adult colony cat and that they will likely never be a typical house cat if rehomed as an adult.
I have found homes for 3 of my small colony. They were not the three that were most social with me. But they were the ones that I could tell from experience would have the best chance of thriving in a home.
George, the most social with me and a gorgeous cat that many people would want based on looks, was actually the most feral of the colony. I would have felt unsafe placing him in a home. When he showed signs of wanting to transition to inside, we offered him a home with us. But we are very feral experienced and know how to handle him.
He loves me so much. But he has still bitten or scratched me multiple times out of fear. Vet care requires sedation and there are limited treatment option due to him not being able to be handled. This would be too much to ask your average cat person to take on.
So while yes, some colony caretakers are controlling, object to rehoming, and sometimes even tnr, they are not the norm. Most of us just have to balance what the person wants with what is in the cat's best interest. We are their voice.
Of course, if you had come to me and I did not have an appropriate match for you, I would have just helped you find one elsewhere. 🙂
I'd also like to point out that even though you may have a colony cat's best interests at heart, trying to conform them to an indoor life with people can be extremely traumatizing. I'm glad that your cat was able to be socialized and now enjoys life with you, but imagine all those terrified days she had to go through before that happened? Most cats living on the street are perfectly content, especially if they have a caretaker. Hannah even did a video on this very topic, and I would suggest watching it.
Gunga Dinn if you want to adopt a cat I highly suggest the SPCA because you will actually be saving a life, since they euthanize a TON of cats each year. Colony cats are already being taken care of, but cats in an open intake shelter like the SPCA have their days literally numbered. By adopting a cat from a shelter, you allow the SPCA to find/save one more cat to put up for adoption, that would’ve otherwise been euthanized due to space issues.

I am so thankful this program and all you do to save cats. I have a feral kitten that I tried to catch in a cat carrier. She was in the carrier, but she escaped because I wasn't fast enough to get the latch closed. I had been working weeks to socialize her feeding her every day. She loves to be petted, and rubs against our legs, rolls over and plays. I will try again tomorrow night, as Thurs is TNR days in our town. I may have to get a trap and try again. Thanks for your tips. I have already fallen in love with this precious kitty about 6 months old.
💗This week my mom and I trapped 3 feral kittens, and there is one more in the litter. They were at a restaurant in my town and we know the owners. The kittsns are around 8 weeks old so we have them in our care and we have the momma scheduled to be spayed

I have two TNR cats that showed up. A female about 6 years ago and an orange male last year. They are inside/outside cats, they are in at night and get to go out in the morning. Once I feed them in the evening they stay in, no free feeding, a little breakfast and nothing until their main meal in the early evening. I have another little tuxedo TNR kitten that started hanging around, maybe 6 months old. I'm worming him and then will try to introduce him to the others and see if he can fit in. Winter is coming on and he will not survive out there. Keep up the good work, keep up the education and show people why and how to help.

You're doing such a great thing here! There needs to be more people like you doing this. I only came across your channel a few weeks ago, and I've watched quite a few of your videos now. I live in a pretty crappy neighborhood in the UK, where there are so many stray cats. It's really upsetting to see them with no home and nobody to care for them. I regularly feed the cats in my area, but I want to do more for them now, especially since watching your videos and seeing the amazing work you do for cats and kittens. I'm definitely going to try trapping and neutering the stray cats I've been feeding after seeing this. 🐱🥫🐈

Kittens born on the streets have a high mortality rate, especially during the winter, not enough people to take them in while they're young and able to be socialized ...
TNR (trap, neuter, release) the parents is the most humane solution, and I'm glad for cat rescuers who help do this.
I have a TNR cat, she showed up with fresh color in one ear and stitches in the other. I had never seen her before and she acted like a pet. It was weird because the usual apartment outdoor cats kick out any strays and she acted like a pet. She was already liter box trained and wanted inside. The local shelter that does TNR for my area said she wasn't registered as a pet so I gave her a good home.
Nothing wrong with that. That is exactly why Luna was left in her neighborhood. Cats get adopted off the street all the time.

We have two community cats we care for mama and her daughter sassybutt both who went through tnr. Trust me it's good advice to get them fixed.

I wish we had someone like you around here. There are no programs here to help with low/no cost TNR. I have a friend who does it but only in another county. So I'm stuck with a large and ever growing colony I am trying to feed along with my own 18 cats and being unemployed, it is a difficult task. I can only do so much but getting the queen of the colony fixed would be a huge help. She has another 3 babies out there now and I have 2 on my chest right now from one of her female kittens that also needs to be fixed. It's just overwhelming. Having a huge heart for these babies is a burden and a blessing. I need help for these cats!

This is an older video but I've just found it. I've trapped 21 cats in my neighborhood since March. Most of them have come from two females, both of whom I've managed to TNR. And all of them still come to my front porch to eat just about every night. They're all getting back to a healthy weight and it's good to see.
I learned a few things though! I didn't know about putting the food at the front of the trap, and I've just been using tuna in water. I'm scheduled at the Humane Society for another few cats next week so I'm going to put these techniques to use.
How long do you have the cat trapped before their appointment?
@@aprillynne7828 I usually trap them the night before to make sure they don't have any food before their surgery. That's what the Humane Society recommended. Since I put food out around 6pm, that means it's about 5 to 6pm the night before. I use a Wyze camera and a battery pack to monitor the trap, and once I've caught one, I bring it inside and keep them in my spare bedroom overnight. The trap is covered with a large towel to minimize disruptions for the cat.
A few times when I don't catch any at night, however, I've tried again at 6am or so the morning of, so they only end up in the trap for an hour or so before I take them to the Humane Society or a local vet that morning for a 730 to 8am drop-off.
I have found that once I pick them up in the afternoon after surgery, they're still fairly groggy, and I can transfer them to a larger cat carrier that is more comfortable for them (and clean). The trap usually ends up getting soiled the day of. Then I keep them overnight again to monitor their post-surgical status, give them a nice can of Fancy Feast, and release them the next morning if they have recovered well. Knock on wood, none have ever had any recovery issues.
I'm up to 35 cats trapped so far, and I'm going to try to do a few new ones who have showed up in my neighborhood after the 1st.
@@brassmule You are amazing. I just had an epic fail on my first attempt at TNR. My feral is actually pretty close to me. He hisses and bites, so I respect his fear, but I’ve made a home for him inside my home. He comes and goes via a cat door and his area is caged off. I set the trap and he went right in. But I freaked out cause I just couldn’t stand the thought of him being in there for 13 hours. I was so worried about if he would go in, I didn’t consider if he did. I released him and he ran out the cat door. Hoping he comes back tonight. It’s so rainy out. 😞 Shot in the dark, but I’m going to put the trap out at 5:30am and see if he will go back in. I’m really feeling bummed. Super sad. I failed him. I hope I can get it right. I hope he gives me another chance. I’ve done so much work and research and I just messed it up. Ugh. So happy to hear your story! How do you handle them being locked up so long. I just can’t handle that part! My feral is a big boy, too. Thank you so much for sharing. My daughter called the local emergency vet and they said it would be okay to do but not much longer than what he would have been in there. I just decided I couldn’t emotionally stand it. 😭 He deserves better. 🙏🏼❤️
@@aprillynne7828 Yes, the first feral I trapped fought hard to get out initially, and it hit me pretty hard. I decided that I knew the cat would be safe, even if the cat didn't know that, and what I was doing for it was for its own good. Fewer ferals is better for everyone, in the end.
Most of them were fine - some of the meanest looking tom cats barely made a peep the entire time. A couple did try their best the entire time to claw their way out. But I knew they were safe.
It sounds like you've spooked yours big time. I wouldn't try to trap him again for a while. A couple of mine would never go near the traps but I was eventually able to gain their trust enough to snatch and grab them. They all eventually forgave me! Give your guy a week or more of normal activity with no trap, if you can, before you try again, and maybe remove food the morning of so he's extra hungry. You're doing the right thing, and a little short term suffering for him in a safe environment will be worth it in the end.
I take care of a cat colony in my neighborhood. the cats are owned by one of the people in my neighborhood and I can't spay / neuter them unfortunately. I did however name one of the kittens that were born this year Butter after the kitten that died in you video. Safe to say he's doing great and is on his way to being socialized! 😊

We have a mother kitten and two baby kittens underneath our cabin at Nature's getaway RV Park in Pennsylvania we're trying to trap them and hopefully get them to an animal rescue and get them a good family hoping to get them somewhere cheap to fix them and get everything done thank you so much this helps a lot and thank you for helping all those cats and kittens

There's a local kitty that me and my friends are trying to save we know what to do when we get her (we will take her to a local vet for a check-up, the vet often finds good homes for homeless cats, she even adopted one herself)
but the catching is really hard since she's roaming around school etc. Her name's Tosia she's a brown tabby around 4-5 months old. Her owners kicked her out of their house around a month ago and moved to a different city.
So far we're trying to feed her to build trust and we dont want her to starve in the winter.
We have a team of 5 people (2 are backup) and 3 of us have cats

Me and another friend got really sick this Thursday (it's Saturday now) and the other one went to school
There's this kid that also noticed Tosia (a few days later than us) and he decided that he will catch her HIMSELF without anything to transport the poor cat in, he told my friend about that, she didn't tell him anything about our plans but he threatened her that if we "mess" with his plan he'll call the shelter to catch Tosia (yeah... that's just a greaaat idea around Christmas season, suuure) (he once called animal control on the same friend he was talking to when she was taking care of her mother's friend's dog because ""the dog didn't have any grass") and he said that he found a family for her (We really don't trust him). I only learned about this when she came home from school, the guy chased Tosia and she ran away (now we may not find her and we know that we can't feed her near school). When i'll be back i'm going to talk with him
I suggest you trap the kid and get him neutered.

She didn't trust us at all at first. She's staying at my friends house till we find the right home (the same friend who had the cat transporter), she's doing pretty well with the friend's two other cats.
My friend thinks it's cruel to spay/neuter animals, I tried to tell her that it's actually better for them and that way too many kittens and puppies are living on the streets (even bunnies) and she yelled at me for getting my three indoor/outdoor cats spayed....thank you for doing this ♥️

There was actually a feral Mom cat that has had 2 litters in a large bush around my backyard, I got one litter of 4 kittens a home, and actually took one myself, we got mama to cat house on the kings and we're trying to find the dad. Sadly, the last litter was only one kitten, and I was only 11, but I had fed mama cat when she had her first litter, so I did the same with the second one, feeding mama close to her kitten, to make sure she wasn't far from her kitten. The kitten was vocal and growing so I thought she was ok, but it was so soon after her first litter, I should've known there would've been some genetic problems, and I didn't wanna put mama and her kitten through the stressful process of getting them to a shelter while the kitten was so young. But out of the blue one day, when I went out to check on them secretly, and silently as I could, I noticed how silent it was outside, and when I checked, the kitten was lifeless on thed ground, it looked as if he/she passed in her/his sleep, but I sobbed about it for so long. The situation was taken care of, but I can't deal with the fact that a kitten died and it was all my fault. Sorry to be such a Debby downer, but I wanted to help emphasize the importance of TNR as well. Please spay and neuter your pets. And any other feral you might find.

Please don't blame yourself for the kitten's death. It may not have been able to live for internal problems that it had before birth. I had a litter of two kittens from my own house cat, that nursed well and looked wonderfully healthy - and one morning I found them both dead, with no sign of why. My vet, who was very good, told me that it was known to happen, like SIDS, but no one had found out the cause yet.
Please give yourself credit for doing the best you knew at the time, and accept my congratulations for seeing that the mother cat was taken care of.
I'm so sorry that the kittens passed, my condolences to you and the mother cat. And thank you, it's always my pleasure to help cats that need help. And good for you to be checking on the kittens and mother, and even taking them to the vet to make sure it wasn't anything severe. the world is lucky to have such caring people like you in the world.
This is so valuable. I hope your video and all other videos out there encourage people to give it a try. Just feeding feral/stray cats is not ideal. It may make you feel good, and it may help cats in the short term, but we're not solving any problems doing that. We have to go the extra mile and do TNRs.

When I moved into my new house , a group of stray kittens about a year old had been hanging around already with no human interaction before and one of them, a black cat with green eyes, immediately came up to me and demanded to be pet and she now comes inside every day and just falls asleep on someone's lap. Most of the other kittens keep their distance except for one who I call Oliver, who was very skittish at first and is still skittish refusing to let me pet him but he loves to talk to me a lot and peek into my house when I open the door but won't come in. I live in a remote place and there barley any people.
Here in Australia i don’t see meny stray dogs and cats and I have never seen a cat Conley in my area but I still like watching these videos just in case! If I ever do find a cat Conley I will definitely do TNR on them.

Just so you know, new laws have been introduced this year (in SA only I think) where all pet cats and dogs must be desexed in an attempt to lower the rate of animals ending up in shelters. I think it's pretty cool and will help to lower the number of cats getting killed in shelters, too, which is pretty great :)
The legality of TNR in Australia is questionable. Our feral cat problem is monumental and the cats cause irreversible damage to the already threatened native wildlife. I have volunteered at a native animal rescue and cat shelter, and neither organisation is legally allowed to release cats (or foxes) back into the wild.
If you want to help Australian cats, the best thing you can do is volunteer and donate to shelters, and foster cats while permanent homes are found for them. Some organisations like SAFE focus on rehabilitating "community" cats and/or ferals, which 100% saves lives!

Omg. I love you. I started watching your videos yesterday, and I've already subscribed. You're truly inspiring. I live in New York City, and across from my building are about 5 stray cats. I've seen kittens, and near my mom's house, were kittens in the bushes. It's sad and you're absolutely right about the TNR service. You've taught me a lot.
My sister's cat was a kitten saved by tnr! They got his litter and his parents and he is just the cutest fluffball ever. Sucks that some kittens don't get saved :( you're very cool and strong for doing what you do 💜
