He dated a black man who didn't want to believe that he (the black man) was gay. But they both were beaten on that Boston sidewalk, presumably because people assumed that they were. In the poem, I think Sam struggles to accept his identity and to co-exist with others' preconceptions about him (evinced by repeated references to dogs) while he, at the same time, owns who he is.
This is unspeakably haunting/ beautiful.
