  • For the last 30 years, Seth Godin has been turning on the lights for millions of people (myself included) through his blog, online courses, lectures, and 19 best-selling books. Yes- 19! If you’ve been following his work, you’ll know he’s one most brilliant marketing minds of our time. Now he’s out with his 20th book, The Practice: Shipping Creative Work.
    If you’ve been listening to this podcast for awhile, you’ll know I’m a huge believer in nurturing a creative practice. So often we sit around wondering why we are stuck, why we lack inspiration or are simply avoiding getting started. The secret? A steady, regular and brave practice that will keep you creating, even through the muck. It’s working through those bad ideas and mediocre creations, that get you to your greatest work.
    We cover a lot of ground in the episode and I’m excited for you to dig in. Some topics include:
    How all criticism isn’t the same, and most of it isn’t valid
    * The difference between skill vs talent
    * Attitude and mental mindset
    * Trusting yourself and learning to trust yourself over time
    * Finding your voice
    * and so much more
    Enjoy!

    Chase what a great video. Close to the 10 minute marker you asked Seth a very important question. It was where and why did we begin to not trust ourselves. It starts when we become ungrounded. Trusting ourselves is based on being connected to the Force. That is a place where anything can be created, understood, or found. But when we weekend this connection, or all together break the connection - then it is impossible to feel trust. Trust is not an experience that comes from self. It comes from this connection of Energy and it is grounded. It really is pretty simple... the Light turns on. It is well explained in the book, Ground and Harness HorsePower.

    Just discovered Chase Jarvis' TH-cam channel... very pleased I did! Great interview and I felt Chase's reflections and insights added real value, and the chemistry between them brought out the best in Seth... this was a real dialogue rather than a standard "interview". Many thanks. I'd like to comment on Chase's challenge to Seth that "aren't we all certainty-seeking beings?" I don't think 'knowing' that we have to face uncertainty is enough to actually face it. Just as knowing you have to "face the fear and do it anyway" doesn't make that easier to do either. I learned something that I'd like to share, that may help. My brother Mike is a British champion freediver, and there is nothing like immersion in the ocean to awaken your fear! Mike taught me something really simple that has become a life principle for me ever since: "you have to accumulate positive experiences." This is an emotional, feelings-based approach to facing fear rather than an intellectual one. Seth talked about "doing" a lot, and Chase kept coming back to "trusting yourself" as a theme. I think the practice of "trusting yourself" could be understood as "accumulating positive experiences." You can keep pushing your boundaries only as long as you subconscious doesn't stop you. And as neuroscientist Joe Dispenza says, "your subconscious lives in your body." When you learn to freedive, you will discover that you start turning back to the surface involuntarily. What happens, is that your mind moves from the present moment, into the future: and your fantasy of drowning, gasping for breath, grips your experience of the dive... and you start wanting to breathe. But Mike said something very simple: "if you FEEL good to continue, then you are okay to continue". In other words, put your attention on your body: breathe, relax, enjoy the moment. Is everything okay? Then your fear - born of survival instincts - is imaginary. This sounds simplistic, but in fact it's a deep truth that we "know" what to do by feeling it. In freediving, youcan't dive if you are tense... so you have to place attention in the feeling of the dive. Nassim Taleb once said in a talk he gave, that you know if your fear is real through a simple test: if you walk outside and can feel the sun on your back, and the fear goes away... then your fear is imagined not real." So the way you push yourself into the unknown, is step by step. Enjoy the process, by placing attention in your body and the present, rather than ONLY living in the head and rationalising with your intellect. Be mindfully aware and present. As you accumulate small positive experiences, you learn, "I can do this" and you go further. By extension, pushing too hard will give you a negative experience... and that process will just make you freeze... so take your time, and go step by step. That's how Mike learned to dive to well over 100 metres on one breath. But it's also how we do push boundaries, I think, in general.

      I like what you said. It feels like a "safer" way to get to where I'd like to go, so that I don't short circuit and just freeze up. I'm going to read this again to make sure I understand it correctly.

      @@johnoregan8911 I wouldn't even oppose generalities to fundamental truths, it would be unrealistic to judge a speaker for not providing those. However, I think one should expect practical advice or applicable concepts. The truth is that, most of self improvement is the same idea, repeated ad nauseum in every flavor, play of words, clever twist...Etc. I have listened to this whole interview and found not one single practicality. Did you?

  • @cowboyyoga
    @cowboyyoga 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In a practice we do not reconcile the part of self that are wounded. If we do that the practice will be bleed to the point of not functioning. Seth says that the practice is just typing, and okay in this case it is. But when we look at the whole system, or really just look at the whole energetic system - Isaac Asimov he just figured out, and not in his head did he figure this out, he figured out how to turn on the ground for the system. He made this grounding key to his practice and we know this because he dedicated from eight am to twelve noon everyday to sit and write. And the Force flows through us and more so because we are grounded. And because we keep all the wounded nonsense for another time outside of the practice. So in short... there is no writer's block, but there are lots of people who are ungrounded and don't know what it means to feel grounded.

    According to my five soul theory the leader the imposter and the artist are three different types of souls. It’s the way they’re born. The leader is a manager soul. The imposter is a worker soul. And the artist is what I call a musician soul. I guess my only difference of opinion with Seth is that I consider the leader to be a foreman, which is a compassionate but ambitious worker soul. But the person who organizes hires and fires and I think is the leader of the leaders is what I call a manager.
