In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm relasing my Behind the Score Episode 26 that originally was recorded and posted to my Patreon a few months ago. In that episode, I took a deep dive into A Song For All Seasons from Renaissance. And, since I had the opportunity to see them in concert last night, I thought it an appropriate time to share this exclusive video here on TH-cam. I hope you enjoy!

John Camp's bass lines are sensational. Squire would be proud of them. The whole composition is phenomenal and Renaissance should have been much more successful than it was.

Seeing Renaissance live in Chicago back in the late 70s (with AL DiMeola opening), was one of the most transcendent experiences I've ever had. And when Annie held that note at the end of "Ashes are Burinng" the crowd erupted! It seemed to go on forever. What a voice! What a band!

In the early to mid 70’s, I was heavy into all kinds of music. My dad hated a lot of the music I was listening to. He was into country and he turned me onto many great country musicians. Roy Clark, Chet Atkins among many others. I was also into Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc…. When I discovered Renaissance, he came up to my room and asked who it was I was listening to and he said he loved this woman’s voice.

I was lucky enough to see Renaissance several times in the late 70s, including the tour for this album. I got backstage on one occasion, and was gifted Terry's drumsticks, John Tour's t-shirt, and a kiss on the cheek from Annie. Joyous music-making then and now ❤️

"Past or future, here or there/Shelter comes in words from you, so talk to me/I hear your voice, it comforts me/In morning dreams I take your hand, you walk with me" - that section STILL sends amazing shivers down my spine every time I hear it.

I used to listen to this on the floor of my parent's living room, with the speakers pushed up against my ears. It is even more beautiful now. They never wasted their, or our, time with less than excellent music. They were one of the standard-bearers of that time, which explains why so much of the music was of the first water. Hi Doug. So glad you have gotten into Renaissance.I was a big fan of ELP in high school and college, but when I found these folks, they quickly went to he head of the class. I have become a big fan of John Tout, and it breaks my heart that he's no longer with us. I would love to see you do a study of all the classical music he worked into their arangements, i.e. Debussy's Sunken Cathedral in At the Harbour. Both John and his sister loved to play classical music, especially together. When she passed away, he stopped playing for a number of years. So sad.

Finally I found what I was looking for a long time. A "reactor" with a sound knowledge of music theory. I love music theory, I studied it myself and I love deep analyses of music. Thank you so much for sharing this and showing more people the fascination of the theoretical part of music, with which you learn the language of music and understand it on a much deeper level.
I have a suggestion for a reaction of a very interesting song: A perfect circle - imagine. It´s a John Lennon Cover and it brings the song to a whole new level and point of view. With a very interesting and emotional intense use of minor and major. The pictures in the video are very intense too, so you should think about if you want to use the video with only the cover of the cd. The video with the pictures intensifies the music on the one hand but on the other it is marked for only people over 18 years I think. A comparison between the original song by Lennon related to the different statement of both songs, how you interpret it and how they reach that would be very interesting.

When I heard the little ads for Novella on commercial radio when It was released I just had to have it in my collection. Although prior to that I had heard a few tracks by the band I hadn't really appreciated the skill of these superb performers. Jon Camp's bass always amazes me in that it seems to talk rather eloquently not just as a definition of the rhythm. As is often the case I doubt very much there will be any music or for that matter performers who could repeat what Renaissance did in the 70's. It was and remains unique and beautiful music. I actually saw them live once at what was then Hammersmith Odeon where the support band were The Tom Robinson Band, very much from the punk era which was an extremely odd combination. I sat in the front row right in front of the PA to the left side, my first gig! Just the band, no orchestra and a half empty Odeon.

Check out the song Mystic and The Muse from their last album (with the 'new' lineup). Also, Touching Once from Novella, especially Live at Albert Hall.
Also, I may have mentioned this before in the comments but if you like this sort of orchestra meets pop/rock style, Ilayaraja's work in film music is well worth your while. Especially, if you like SFAS, then Sundari Kannal Oru Seithi or, more apt, Sattru Munbu (performed by the Budapest Symphonic Orchestra). This sort of orchestral rock was rare in, well, rock/pop of the 60s and onwards but our film music was full of orchestra and that's what Renaissance's more orchestral compositions would bring to my mind.

First time hearing this one. Reminds me very much of early Kansas. Almost A jazz chord progression. Very staccato, with passing from on instrument to another.

Brilliant again, Doug, hearing your analysis of one of my absolute favourite pieces, from one of my top-three favourite bands of all time. I had SO hoped you would review this piece! Now, if you can get to Can You Hear Me or Ashes Are Burning or Northern Lights, having already reviewed Song of Scheherazade, that's my top-five and I'll be an even more happy chappie! Again, thank you!

For some reason this song reminds me of a Rennaissance Fair in Ca.

As someone who's a lover of music more generally, and a fan of Renaissance specifically, it's absolutely fascinating to see you reading the score along with the music - you obviously extract a level of meaning way beyond us non-musicians.
I know this is a bit out of the mainstream for the music you cover on this channel, but would there be any chance of you casting an eye on something modern classical - Philip Glass's Akhnaten, especially "Hymn" or the "Funeral of Amenhotep"?

Annie is my favorite female Vocalist so had have all her albums with Renaissance. Saw them many times in concert including the SFAS tour. Fantastic song.

At times the orchestrations have an Alan Parsons quality to them. But this was a transitional album, the last with an orchestra and the last with one of these epics. The instrumental arsenal has been expanded to include synths and electric guitars. So I guess you could say both Alan Parsons and ELO were influencing their sound during this period.

Love Renaissance, and saw them once in the U.K. many years ago. If not already looked at, then the Ashes Are Burning album is amazing, especially Annie’s stellar vocal in the title track. Actually got into the band’s music, as when doing accountancy training my manager was an older relative of Annie Haslam, and often talked about her and the band!

    Wonderful, Doug!
In this case, the pitched percussion at the beginning is xylophone, not marimba.

Glad to see you do more Rennaissance. This was great though; this is one I wish you had used the keyboard to help high light the chord structures as you explained them.

I often think this album is overshadowed by the hits and subsequent shift away from the classic sound. Love this and Day of The Dreamer. Fascinating seeing how complex this is yet Annie just soars through it.

Being a 40-year-lover of Renaissace, while professionally working around the world, I never found a complete band (all genuises in their part of the whole), never found any other that matches in grandiosity as Renaissance, it is a shame on most superficialy-built others. More 2 comments: Being deligheted w the band, I go in touch w Bettty Tatcher, the genius Buddhist Corsican monk- like who receives the least credit. Unfortunatly she passed away w cancer before she reveled her mistical secrets in some of her lyrics (the double meaning), like this one which is both the cyclical seasonality which Earth goes thru but also the process of the creation of the Universe (or our Earth).
Betty was disapointed for the little credit she receives for what makes Renaissance even more unic because there is spirituality in many songs (like full Album Ashes are Burning, which the doble meaning has the phases of dying in moving to the "beyond" and phases of spiritual Enlightnement.
The richness of their lyrics different of the majority that 90% is superficial bullshit love affair (that is what sells, emotion and love). Well I could go one for pages as a result of 40 years dissecting every one of their songs. I got to the point that I advised my family that when I die they burry me with all Renaissance albuns for the great pleasure the y give to me through the stages of my life.

I know this don't make much sense, but the part which begins at 2:25 reminds me so much of the game Zelda: Link to the past, the first time that Link goes to the dark world as a bunny

Hi Doug, I have always been a huge Renaissance fan and I own there entire library. I love to watch you explore there music and a Song for All Seasons is certainly a great choice. I don't know if you have listened to their 1972 release Prologue. Another fabulous album in its entirety. That being said, I would love to see you do a reaction to Rajah Khan from that album. It is a piece that seems to me to be exploring and experimenting with taking a different musical style and having fun doing it in a very "prog" way. As always, Annie's vocals are amazing on the piece.

Hi Doug. I'm Bernd from Germany. I love your rock reviews. You recently reviewed the Deep Purple album "Machine Head" in its entirety. And found good. ;) I suggest you review the previous album "Fireball" from 1971. It's musically more diverse. The song "Fireball" is basically the first speed metal song, "No one came" is the first song with chanting, so the first "rap metal" song. Actually all the songs are worth mentioning and unique. For me it's the best album by the legendary Deep Purple Mark II formation. I think you will like it. It's one of the most underrated music albums in the world. Every song on it is fantastic and different from all the others.

I saw 3 shows 1983-1984, sat at the edge of the stage at Annie's feet (she performed barefooted). Awesome shows! I'd sure be interested in your reactions to "Rajah Khan" (Prologue) and "Can you hear me?" (Novella). If you react to their live stuff, the BBC Sight and Sound live show is awesome, as id "Ashes are burning" from Live at Carnegie Hall.. Annie is even more impressive live. Such a stage presence!
