      At least they realized after awhile that the jobbers in the nWo needed their own theme in order to let the crowd know that none of the stars would be in the match.
      But that guitar riff still gives me PTSD flashbacks to bad WCW matches that would always end with the nWo jobbers interfering in every nWo match, resulting in a disqualification and no one getting over.

    It still baffles me when you consider how far guys like Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero would come when they left wcw, and the fact that guys like them were overlooked is mind blowing, especially when I see that happening in wwe today

    • @standardofexcellence
      @standardofexcellence 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      It's like when a pro sports team drafts a bunch of new early first round players but because they don't like inexperience they don't play them but play all veterans (has beens or status quo in wcw' s case) thus not ever consistently sustaining success

    • @handsolo1209
      @handsolo1209 5 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      It's not mind blowing at all. WCW had a roster of huge stars all at the same time. Hogan is the biggest star in pro wrestling history. Savage was a huge star. Sting was WCW's icon. DDP had moved up to the main event rapidly. Goldberg was a phenomenon. Hall & Nash were huge for a couple of years. Scott Steiner was just becoming a main player. Jericho & Eddie were very talented and got lost in the shuffle. In another time they would have been used much better. None of the others like Benoit, Malenko etc were anything other than mid card guys and WWF found to their cost when they hired The Radicalz that people tuned out when they were used on top. Just because a mark like Meltzer cums in his pants for a fake fight it doesn't mean jack shit when 90% of your paying customers switch channels when these guys are on TV. Very few people (Jericho, Austin & Eddie) can genuinely feel that they had a glass ceiling in WCW. Most of them were on a glass platform that elevated them way beyond where they would have been without big stars bringing in the viewers.
      Please name all of these guys who were overlooked in WCW. Take Eddie & Jericho out of it and name anybody.

    • @CarterHayes77
      @CarterHayes77 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      RetroAlchemist18 2000 not really baffling the main event card back than had a ton of older talent (hogan, macho, flair, piper, sting, Nash, hall, Luger etc) on big money, with big egos and they weren’t going to let some younger, smaller guys take their spots. smaller guys with different wrestling styles being in the main event picture was only starting to change in the late 90s there was a big shift once the early 00s happened. even when Guerrero joined wwe, Vince said he was small, was reluctant to give him the championship. Ultimately it was the right decision.

    • @kpllc4209
      @kpllc4209 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Overlooked! Jericho, Benoit, Guerrero and even Malenko were pushed from the start they became household names in WCW. Everyone had a role, the big stars were to get people to watch, and the guys previously mentioned were there to keep them watching. At this time main events were for the veterans and major angles, the matches sucked but story were ok and the undercard was always the real show.

    • @speedy932key4
      @speedy932key4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      KP LLC i think the reason I saw it as overlooked is mainly because Chris Jericho had to sign with the WWF to eventually become wcw champion. When you have these wrestlers who can always deliver great performances, but you still put more time into guys like hulk hogan, Kevin Nash and others, it just strikes me as odd. That's why I fucking hate the fact that Brock lesnar is universal champion, when there are so many wrestlers that are more deserving in my opinion, like Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre and Finn balor

    I think the souled out concept would be better in 1998 or later this year when there was a conflict in the nwo especially after the Wolfpac split as a way to settle their differences inside of the family the same way the mafia does like the sopranos

    • @andresgc770
      @andresgc770 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I was thinking the same thing, but didn't the Wolfpac start in like mid 1998? So Souled Out 1999 would've been the first one since the split (unless they changed the month of Souled Out to June or later).
      Still, I 100% agree with you that an nWo vs nWo PPV could've worked. Though they would've had to make the Wolfpac bigger, since there were only like 6 of them, while the Black & White faction had like 60 members...

      I think the only way it works is if you keep the nwo small -- like, nash, hall, hulk, bischoff, dibiase as the "bankroller" and maybe like one other guy. this first ppv is them auditioning wrestlers to be on their show/to be the last guy who officially joins the group instead of just being approved of by them. the show should have some kind of genuine differences in style compared to the wcw branded stuff, and the nwo/wcw brand could battle/invade from time-to-time. I think it still has a really limited shelf-life, but you could probably get more out of it than what they actually did. You could still do a nwo/wolfpac split here if you wanted i guess.
      they just got so caught up in making the nwo seem "cool" that they forgot to think about the fact that the nwo are a faction on a wrestling show.

    Jericho and Chono had a match at Nitro which led to this match at PPV.
    Hugh Morrus (replacing Konnan) taking on Bubba was logic because Bubba was a Dungeon member before becoming a nWo member.
    Mongo had a briefcase because it was given him by the Horsemen when he turned on Kevin Green at GAB'96. The story with Debra was that she liked Jeff Jarrett and wanted to help him with Mongo being angry about it, but Debra talked him into helping Jarrett.
    Eddie won the US belt in a tournament final at Starrcade'96 against DDP and was then attacked by the nWo, Syxx stole the belt.

Eddie beat DDP at Starrcade but the NWO stole the replacement U.S. belt that kinda looked like the Cruiserweight title. I only bring it up because I've been binge watching WCW PPVs starting at Bash at the Beach 96. Well Zane, since you have plans to review Starrcade 1997 in the near future, you're also gonna have to review the 1997 Hulk Hogan film Assault on Devil's Island, which was directed by Jon Cassar, and co-executive produced by Eric Bischoff and Michael Berk (of Baywatch and Thunder in Paradise fame).
    Why? Well, in the weeks leading up to that film's premiere, Bischoff encouraged viewers of Monday Nitro to watch the film by staging the long-awaited contract signing between Hogan and Sting for Starrcade during the commercial breaks.
    As a result of this, Assault on Devil's Island actually did pretty well on its first showing, drawing a 4.2 rating against the WWF's retrospective on the first ten years of Survivor Series (which drew a 2.8).
    One week later on Nitro, Bischoff crowed about the rating, claiming that TNT executives had promised to make a 23-episode television show, if the film drew over a 4.0 rating which it did. But, they didn't make a series, though they did make a sequel entitled Assault on Death Mountain (which you should also review some other time in the future), airing on TNT two years later.

    I sometimes feel like I’m the only one that actually likes the concept of nWo Souled Out. (Not how the PPV turned out, just the concept.) I mean, we’ve seen the storyline time and again about how villains try to conquer literally everything and fail miserably. Hell, even Vince McMahon couldn’t successfully banish Stone Cold from WWF and he didn’t even try to run an entire PPV dedicated to his Corporation faction or something (although he did win a Royal Rumble...).
    This PPV actually threw itself into the “Evil won!” gimmick. I liked how everything was under villain control: arena design, production control, ring introductions, referees, etc. I feel like Souled Out could’ve been done right, but instead we got what we got.
