      The 14 mbp is an outstanding laptop, but I can understand wanting the 15 air. It’s very thin, and has a good amount of screen space. I think it will be very popular for college students/ people on the go who want a bigger display. Plus, the chip and battery life are still pretty incredible. It’s a shame they are still starting these laptops at 256gb ssd(especially with ssd’s being so affordable nowadays).
      Probably the best option would be to get the 256gb/16gb ram option and purchase an external SSD. If you get that with an education discount, its 1379 with a 150$ giftcard rebate. That’s a pretty compelling offer if you ask me.

    • @abc123fhdi
      @abc123fhdi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jayg339 kinda a pain to have to carry an external drive the point is to be thin and light and internal storage is faster, installing apps on the external drive can cause issues with it not appearing in launch pad, not sure how well that works and it will be slower. also the 14 pro has higher screen resolution and ppi so you can fit more on the screen at native resolution but then everything also appears a lot smaller, this is nice as it matches the old 15 pro resolution so still plenty of screen area and everything isn't super tiny. I got the edu discount and $150 gift card as well but went with bigger ssd, it's also discounted from regular price for the upgrade. Ordered it after it was available in store so I'm picking it up later this month rather than shipping it and also got trade in offer on my 2020 base M1 Air for $500

    It starts at $1300 but you’re going to bump up the hard drive at the very least. I think for a lot of people this will be close to the base MacBook Pro price. ($1800 for 15inch air - Vs a 14 inch pro at $2000).
    The marketing term for this is The Decoy Effect. This is going to move more MacBook Air customers into MacBook Pros.
    You really don’t get much for the bump in price to this 15inch MacBook Air. You get a TON with the small bump in price to the Pro.
    You’re celebrating a customer manipulation tactic.

    • @Adam-vx6to
      @Adam-vx6to ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Nah, you're overstating how many people can't get by without base specs. Base specs are fine for a LARGE amount of users.
      Calm down.

    • @emperormouse5487
      @emperormouse5487 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What you're forgetting is that is the price for a base model 14 inch Pro which a majority of people will also update the hard drive for. So in the end you are paying ~700$ more for Pro specs and losing an inch of screen. For most people, that 700$ isn't really justifiable especially when the base chips are already so powerful. The M1 chip (not the pro or max model, just base M1 chip) is like 5x times more powerful than my fully specced 15 in 2018 macbook pro. What on earth would I need a pro model for unless I plan to do gaming (which is currently futile on Mac OS) or development/media (which I don't). The only reason I got my Macbook Pro was because I needed the extra screen real estate which I can now get for a 1000$ cheaper than what I paid for my laptop.

    • @zero11010
      @zero11010 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think both of you are not considering an aspect of human nature. This relates to the decoy effect.
      People want more. People regularly get more than they need, and I mean that in every way.
      No one needs to drive a car with 1000hp and a 2 and a half second 0-60 time to go to the store to buy milk. But, here we are.
      The VAST majority of the population doesn’t even come close to utilizing what their computer is really capable of (not until years and years later when their machine isn’t performing as well).
      The average person doesn’t do much more than surf the web and check email. That average person is still buying a MacBook Pro a lot of the time (the majority of sales are not to people maxing out the performance of their computers).
      I was being generous when I only suggested upgrading the hard drive. That’s something a lot of people fill up. I imagine a lot of people are going to upgrade the real performance of their machine and don’t really need to.
      We aren’t talking about what YOU would do. We are talking about what the average person would do. YOU may go to a theater and only want a medium soda and only buy a medium soda. MOST people see the price of the medium and the price of the large, then think about how they like more, and then buy the large that they don’t really need, just because it feels like they’re getting more for their money.
      That is the decoy effect. I feel like each of you just separately asked me to explain it in more detail. It isn’t about if YOU fall for it.

External drives aren’t really an option. If you need to be mobile external stuff that could have instead been internal is a real drag.

      @andyH_England ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The display on the Air is as good as the MB Pro in most regards, especially for SDR viewing which is what most of us will do on an ultrabook. HDR is nice but I barely use it and I run my Macs in power saving mode unless I need the performance so 120Hz will be disabled. The advantages of the MB Pro 14 are not as obvious as people make out. The speakers are a bit better but any extra performance is moot if you are happy with the Air as an alternative. I would definitely get the MB Air 15 as it has a larger display than the MB Pro 14 and that is the USP of the Air 15-inch and why most people will buy it. So those saying buy the 14 are missing the point.

    The screen, ports on both side, speakers make the extra worth the money and again you shouldn’t suggest they would cost more. Ports are nothing, even just puts one of the 2 on the otherside. One side makes it’s a mess.

This is the best option for most people use ICloud for storage so everything is accessible on all devices. People get way too hung up on over specking for what they actually do. Sure if you are a heavy content creator or actually need more storage or ram get it or move up to a pro but for the consumer base this is targeting it would be a waste of money. The base model is more than enough for most people who are using this for office apps, web browsing and checking emails. And it handles most photo editing and 4k video editing fine. Maybe instead of general bashing of base models give some examples. Maybe the base model isn’t for you. Of course if you are editing 8k video or need the extra storage or ram then a base model won’t cut it but for the average user they are fine. So the only real reason to get a MBA is the cheap entry point. But from a TCO point of view and user point of view you're still better with the pro and it will outlast the MBA and still have a better resale in 3 years.
      And I had an MBA and returned it..

On average I use less than 3-4 tabs anyway and usually close them all out when finished. Just habit from windows days. As far as ssd speed. I really don’t notice any difference between my pro and air but then again I’m not a power user. As far as I Cloud i pay like $1.00 a month for 1TB which is plenty for me I have yet to close to being out of disk space but i also don’t download a lot of useless apps or games. If you need that then go for the pro and yes before I would pay extra to upgrade a mba I would definitely consider the pro I f I needed that but I don’t. However the portability is another consideration. So a upgraded mba may be better for some. All Im saying is the base mba is fine for the majority of users doing everyday task. If you need more certainly get more but to outright bash the base models as garbage just because they don’t suit your particular needs or wants and discourage others who would be perfectly happy with a base model is a little lame. I still have a 2019 intel mba that runs great. No way near the performance and battery life of M1 or M2 but still handles office work web browsing with ease. • @xalvarez07
      @xalvarez07 ปีที่แล้ว

      @RoastBeefSandwich yes if you already have it like I do, then you don't need it. Most people right now, yes, don't need it. But if you're spending 1000s of dollars in 2023, then it's much better to upgrade the laptop you're buying now and not need the space instead of needing the space and not being able to upgrade it. But yes, from a pure hardware perspective the M1 8gb 256gb is ideal for 95% of people. But financially and future proof friendly it's better to upgrade it now if you plan to buy new.

    Base model only has 8GB of Ram. You can’t get it upgraded to 16GBs unless you order it directly from Apple. It means Best Buy, Amazon and other online shops will only have 8GB version. At least 8GB on Mac OS is equivalent to having 16GB of Ram in Windows.

    • @Jasterrrr
      @Jasterrrr ปีที่แล้ว +3

      8GB on Mac OS is NOT equivalent to having 16GB of Ram in Windows. The exact behavior depends on the workload, and some systems use RAM more aggressively than others by design and they rely on using swap/pagefiles more. If you primarily use your computer for web browsing, watching videos, writing docs, and similar lighter loads, you'll be more than fine with 8GB on Windows as well. This is my experience, not an assumption btw.
      Also, if your Windows PC has 8GB of RAM but has a fast disk just like Macbooks have, that helps a lot in situations where you exceed your RAM capacity and OS is forced to use disk cache/swap/pagefiles more.

      You have to run a heavy load for 10 minutes straight before it throttles, and it still runs well when throttled - it doesn't reduce the performance by a big amount.
