Ball Valve Packing Gland

  • Believe it or not, a ball valve packing gland does exist! Like its close cousins the gate valve and globe valve, you can pack a ball valve.
    Although it may not be obvious at first glance, removing the lever handle will expose the ball valve packing gland. By removing the packing gland nut, you'll be able to pack the valve in the same manner as the gate or globe valve!
    Regards & Happy Plumbing,
    Bob

    I had a plumber try to charge $750 for a valve replacement. Knowing that was BS, I found different plumber who told me to look up on youtube how to pack a valve. Thanks to the 2nd plumber and your video, I was able to fix this problem myself and at zero cost!
    Just an FYI to folks here, avoid companies that simply take down your info and route your request to a subcontracted plumber. You'll get a cookie cutter solution at a higher price. The second plumber I called picked up himself and was managed by a crew he personally hires. They'll take jobs that's worth their time but help you out if it's something trivial and can be done yourself.
    Thanks again

    Edit: mine did not have a locking washer. I was worried over nothing, ha! Also: I used a crescent wrench to not chew the nut up.
    I appreciate you! Just wanted to know if anything would jump out if I take the handle off - you warned me about the locking washer. Thank you. Up against a wall and taking the handle off will work much better (twisting on a threaded brass ball valve, handle rubbing against wall).

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos

      Replace it, if the stem disengages from the ball and it's not in synch with the handle time for a new valve.

      hi Bob, I also have a ball valve on my boiler that has started to drip water suddenly from the stem, I took off the handle to tighten up the packing nut and lo and behold there is no packing nut. There is only a thin nylon washer under the handle, whatlooks like a packing nut is round with no flats to put a wrench on. The boiler is fairly new and a high end model made by Bosch, the installers used the copper clamping system to assemble all the fittings. A slick setup but I don't have access to the tools needed to replace the fitting and I probably wouldn't try myself anyway. Have you ever seen a valve like that and am I missing something?

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's leaking thru the stem and you have no packing nut, I would just replace the valve. It most likely has an "O" ring inside that need to be replaced. You might have a hard time hunting the correct replacement down.

    So ive blown out my outside water and sprinklers out for winter .and problem im having is i leave my outside fracet open its all blown out and i have a small drip drip timy put my front fracet even though the ball valve is off to the outside would you say my ball valve nylon set is bad or has small debris .is it very common. I tryed to open shut a bunch i think it made it worst now it drips little more out front fracet even thou its shut off and blow out . Should i just have someone replace valve it looks like newer valve too i thought ball valves never go bad but .just would like your opinion

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The balls don't go bad, but if that nylon seat becomes compromised or debris gets between the ball and seat it'll pass water. You may be better served by having the valve replaced for long term reliability.
