How to fit a ballofix stop valve.Isolating valve

  • These cheap and cheerful valves are handy for fitting on any supply pipe , to say, a tap, toilet cistern and an outside tap. Once fitted, it is easy to turn off an outside tap for winter or fix a dripping tap without turning your main stopcock off, or going into a loft to turn off the hot or cold from a storage tank.
Make sure you get the right ones, you can buy your Ballafix valves here with my Amazon link on my website at the cheapest price. Al www.dereton33.c...

Good video, thanks. Even the cheapest tube cutter is far superior to a hacksaw; much easier and quicker to use (you don't have to hold the tube with one hand while sawing with the other) and makes a perfectly straight and clean cut. Prices start at £2.99 and unless you intend to take up plumbing as a trade, that's all you need.

Thank you for this video. When you turned the water off using the new valve you turned the spindle anticlockwise 90 degrees. Would it be wrong to turn the spindle clockwise 90 degrees to turn off the water? Very helpful clip as I'm about to fit this to the sink in my ground floor cloakroom.
The direction of water flow from what I'd seen on various places is from bottom to up to the taps, is there any reason the isolation valve shouldn't be fitted when the water flow is from top of the pipe to bottom before it gets to the taps?
Reason is that the section of the pipe that feeds to my toilet tank is along the skirting board, making it vulnerable to getting stepped on and breaking causing a leak, so need to fit an isolation valve before this section, e.g. where the flow is from the ceiling downward pipe. before it splits with a T junction to toilet tank and taps for the sink.

Wish I'd watched this before fitting mine to bath tap inlet pupes! Forgot the Boss white sealant and although they seemed watertight at first, 4 mths later there is a tiny leak in one that has SOAKED through outside wall.. unfortunately I'd tiled in the pipes so did not spot it til very late in the dat! Argh!! Stupid error.(Had to smash up 4 massive travertine tiles to get to it!!)
Can I ask if you'd recommend copper over rubber pipes for less leakiness/longevity? (I have rubber ones)
Also, getting the nut and olive off the rubber pipe was incredibly hard! Hacksawed it off in the end... have new olive. Just want to ensure THIS time they are 100% watertight, and that all brickwork is completely dry before retiling!

Hi Dereton, I want to fit an isolation valve to a toilet cistern, however there is only about 12 inches of straight pipe. I am guessing there is little to no play in the copper pipes if cut, definitely no up and down movement, maybe a little sideways movement. What valve would you recommend ? Should I use flexible tails? Are there deep bore valves available to slide onto the other end ?.....many thanks.

Are these valves designed to work only in the fully open or fully closed position - IE can they be used to merely reduce the flow of water if there's too much pressure? the problem I have is that since getting a combi system installed I cannot get the pressure right - there's too much pressure at the bathroom sink, operation is noisy and the mixer tap is stiff to operate. If you turn the pressure down to an acceptable level using the main stop valve then the water is just a trickle the rest of the house.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  6 ปีที่แล้ว

They work well in slowing that speed of water down.

Ever had one of these not close off? One on my toilet doesn't work .The water still flows. And I think the installer knew because the valve is fitted such that the screw is facing the wall - need a stubby screw driver to turn it blind.
So I need to replace it. How hard is that and will the olives be okay.
    Cheers.

throw in some silicone grease around the ball in the valve and give it a few turns back and forth
and it'll work like new again. that's what i do when my ball valve accessories don't budge and silicone grease
can be used with potable water lines.

No boss white or PTFA needed on new compression fittings, ever.

Cumbriahandyman I have to disagree with that one. I have fitted many a brand new compression fitting without boss white and they have leaked, undone them applied some boss white and all good.

You should advise users to get a pipe slice, rather than use a hacksaw because the pipe slice leaves the pipe ends nice a clean and ready to put in the tap. Using a hacksaw then requires the user to clean the pipe up which can be a right pain if it is in an awkward position, and they might use the wrong tool for the job which might distort the end of the pipe, leading to a nightmare

I have to assume most DIY people have the minimum amount of tools at there disposal.

I hate boss white he does not do diversity. Also why are you out of breath? Try settling yourself before recording... it's not a good listen.
