Dangerous places all over Australia. Hackham, Elizabeth, Morphett Vale in Adelaide. Most of shitney is a dump. Bayswater in Perth. I'm sure Brisbane has shitholes too. Mind you Frankston is fine by me, been through there many many times from the age of 18 and never had any issues.

My office was near Flinders Street, and I'd go in by train daily. Haven't been on a train since Friday March 13. Or to the Office. Barely been outside my postcode.
@Cletus Jonson Still at home. I went into the city at the end of November just so I could. Walked around, took some photos, saw the Myer Chrismtas windows. 11th Jan we can take 50% back into the office, so will be doing a mix of on site and home work for a while yet.
The day they filmed the replacement buses on the Cranbourne/Pakenham line I actually lost my job and it was just the kick in the guts I needed that I said screw it and cried on the platform. Honestly kinda funny to see this in retrospect

My next door neighbour was one of those people who jumped in front of a train. I was actually heading to work at the time, and if I'd taken my normal route, rather than trying to avoid traffic, I would have seen it happen. She didn't make it. The reality is every time someone is struck by a train, there's probably a family who will be missing someone coming home at night. If you feel depressed or suicidal, reach out. Get help. There is someone out there who cares about you. Look up mental health lines, call a family member, a neighbour, a friend, someone, anyone! Just don't make that choice to take your own life. Don't do something permanent that you can't back out of.
very true. Suicide creates more problems than solves them. I lost quite a few friends to suicide. Identifying the remains of a human vs a V/Line to spare the poor mother was not pleasant.

I was a bit surprised they announced the cause (of fatal one). They often don't, particularly if a person on foot, & only do after it's been confirmed it wasn't fatal, Announcement is often like: delays on (whatever line) and police are attending

Not sure why this was in my recommended... but as a born and bred Melburnian, and a lifetime user of trains, as well as having met friends under the clocks from 1979 and right up to 2021, I found this really interesting... and reminiscent of many wonderful journeys as well as numerous cancellations, bus replacements, and even meeting people who ultimately became great friends and the odd lover... Melbourne trains ROCK!

In 2020... even though it was COVID-19 times, it was still very busy, thank you to the People who work at Flinders for their dedication for getting people like me and my colleagues through on the trains. Especially during the peak hour and the city loop.

I agree. I've lived in inner Melbourne since 95 and it's really lost its charm with all the new apartment complexes and boom in population. I miss all the cheap cafes, bookshops, pubs and galleries. But my house is now worth $$$$ so I'm glad about that!
This made me strangely nostalgic. I haven’t used metro trains regularly in a few years, and I hated it when I was a daily commuter, but seeing this and even noticing some familiar faces of the staff was like seeing an old friend. An old friend that was kind of a dick most of the time but you still love them because they’ve been in your life so long.

Great video . The train driver is so right. To me the old Tait trains were noisy, felt as though they were going to fall off the tracks occasionally but boy they sat a lot of people. I shudder at the thought of standing near the open doors on a hot day, almost hanging out.
Amazing pre covid days. I use to live in Broadmeadows and Watsonia and used the Met often. Would travel to rual Victoria as well on the V-line so this is interesting to watch. Thankyou.

Melbourne is Cooler the people are amazing here they generally live with less worry sometimes they do not worry at all.Even City people as well. Thats what I love about here the most. I have worked as a night shift taxi driver for 4 years and I call them the best 4years of my life . Sorry I compared to Sydney only because I haven't been anywhere alse that much.
Hilarious intro! Actually worked for two of the railroads featured in the intro - LIRR and NJT. Arguably two of the busiest in the U.S. Where one minor hiccup can cause major backups, inconveniences to so many.
The station is badly in need of a renovation. The narrow entrances/exits to the platforms were meant to be redone ages ago and there's big areas abandoned that could be used to take stress off of the main platforms
Town Hall station in Sydney would have to be up there in the busiest per square metre/platform etc considering its size Only 6 platforms, across two levels but during peak it's one of the most densely packed stations in Australia

Lol so strange hearing Flinders Street called one of the world’s busiest stations. Every time I travel to the northern hemisphere I’m reminded we have rush hour fucking lucky, and ponder whether Thanos had a point about the snap lol. Don’t get me wrong, it’s busy.. but it’s like sane busy. So many stations in Europe, America, Asia it’s like they’re trying to evacuate the city before the zombies arrive every single day
They have the biggest most spacious interior space too. It is simply the best we got. Sad X'Trapolis 2.0 is an evolution of the smaller X'Trapolis 100. Siemens 2.0 would of been the luxury approach.
I wonder when this was filmed? I lived in Melbourne most of the last four years and the Pakenham/Cranbourne line was my local - unfortunately we've had line works on and off for all that time and train-replacement busses so "This would have been the first week back on trains since December" means almost nothing.
This was interesting and things have certainly changed from my days working for VicRail, The PTC, The Met, and VLine, in the 80's and 90's. Back then we said they needed a 3rd line on the Pakenham line instead of the Frankston line. Why it hasn't been installed is beyond me.
I stop at flinders a few times a week, never concidered that it was all that chaotic. It doesn't feel any busier than Celtral Station or Southern Cross.
I must say as an Aussie, we treat people decently and commuters act responsibly. That’s why Melbourne has been voted most liveable city so many times. I speak as an ex Londoner and ex Melbournian, now living in Brisvegas

Melbourne Metro Trains: the infrastructure direly needs replacing in some parts, sometimes Train Replacement Busses are regular part of the service, some services might be late or even cancelled, and extra trains will definitely improve service. However, to all the staff members, from the control room, the customer service, drivers, cleaning staff on train and at the maintenance depot, to the track maintenance staff members, I would like to say good on you and thank you for all your hard work.
Flinders is not even busy and yet it is pretty inefficient. A real busy station is something like the Osaka-Umeda station or Shinjuku station in Tokyo.
I miss Melbourne. Ionly live in adelaide because my elderly mother is here. Melbourne has it all. great jobs, great rental properties, great events, great transport, awesome food, music, art, sports, universities, parks and gardens. No other city south of the equator comes close to it!
They work for Victoria Police therefore they are Victoria Police members, they are PSO's, who have the same powers as police when it comes to crimes at train stations and other surroundings. They carry firearms and undergo exact same firearm training and defence training as police, but only study at the Academy for 13 weeks, they are very important to the public, as they are great to have at train stations, then police resources are not taken up, and PSO's are trained in dealing with passengers etc. They are important.

They are PSO (Protective Services Officers).; They don't do an alcohol breath test, Drive police cars, or attend to the crime scene. all they do is try to keep the peace at the railway station or bus terminal and I don't think They carry firearms, maybe a taser.
@@podgee7507 PSO's area of operation beyond stations & what that can do and arrest in relation to was expanded. (PSO's stand outside Parliament & other government & related buildings, and have powers) While initially PSO's duty was just at stations & immediate area, it's much more now. They can also be first response to a crime scene until senior police get there. They do drive police cars but they're unmarked (yes, not as patrols but they are police cars). They do carry firearms. They can arrest persons for breaking any law. They can do breath tests, but just don't have necessary items on site. I know, as read changes & as a mate is a PSO. PSO's on duty, also travel on trains now. If you want to find out how far their powers extend now & see their gun touch one on the shoulder, from behind! :P. Yes they don't have as much power as usual Police, but they are part of the Victoria Police force, and they do they're training at same places. When at city stations when in groups there's often to see 1 'police' marked vest & a couple 'protective service officer' marked vests. In that situation the PSO's have many powers during an incident given to them by that Police officer.
using the werribee line everyday it isnt that bad and keep in mind werribe is one of the worst lines ever, delays are at max 10-20 mins and replacement buses happen twice a year

I live in the US but I have family who work in Melbourne. I have been on this train many times and through Flinders Station on the way to Melbourne Museum, where I volunteer. I do remember the unfortunate suicide that happened on the Hurstbridge and I was one of those affected when we had to get off of the train and board busses to Heidelberg. Oh my, what a mess that was. I feel sorry for the unfortunate person who chose to take her life.
Hi Don, yeah that happens in every city here in Australia. I was living in Adelaide in 1995 when a friend who was going to school one morning was sitting in the car with his dad waiting for a train to pass by when a schoolgirl listening to her ipod didn't see the train coming, crossed the train tracks and was sliced in half. I feel sorry for people who live in underpriviledged cities like Adelaide & sydney who take their lives this way, which is understandable as who would want to live in dirty boring places like those! Go Melbourne, Go the Vics!
safly, the incident response people become desensitised. Ive been on active duty, then worked as a village cop- saw plenty of maimed bodies. I was actually in traffic when someone either ignored the gates or was deaf or drug affected (I never found out) and ten cars behind I saw the red mist of the impact. A lot of great people did their best to hide the remains till more copd could come. Very nasty. Poor van man who got front row seat + human debtis was treated for shock, lorry driver opposite had seen it all before. Tragic. The worst is telling the family.
I travelled regularly from 1970 till 1988, the old red and blue trains were great during the summer, doors open, windows down, enter the silver hot boxes, auto door close and windows that would partially open, great to travel in on a 40 degree day. Not

FYI - Shinjuku Station is actually the "world's busiest railway station" with an average of 3.5 million passing through its doors every day (compared to Flinder Street station of approx 110,000 per day) :)

The station is badly in need of a renovation. The narrow entrances/exits to the platforms were meant to be redone ages ago and there's big areas abandoned that could be used to take stress off of the main platforms
They are doing it now, at least the underpasses.

Only 6 platforms, across two levels but during peak it's one of the most densely packed stations in Australia

Lol so strange hearing Flinders Street called one of the world’s busiest stations. Every time I travel to the northern hemisphere I’m reminded we have rush hour fucking lucky, and ponder whether Thanos had a point about the snap lol.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s busy.. but it’s like sane busy. So many stations in Europe, America, Asia it’s like they’re trying to evacuate the city before the zombies arrive every single day

I wonder when this was filmed? I lived in Melbourne most of the last four years and the Pakenham/Cranbourne line was my local - unfortunately we've had line works on and off for all that time and train-replacement busses so "This would have been the first week back on trains since December" means almost nothing.

This was interesting and things have certainly changed from my days working for VicRail, The PTC, The Met, and VLine, in the 80's and 90's.
Back then we said they needed a 3rd line on the Pakenham line instead of the Frankston line. Why it hasn't been installed is beyond me.
Lack of space on the rail corridor after Huntingdale and Oakleigh, and runs through some of the most expensive real estate in Melbourne.

I stop at flinders a few times a week, never concidered that it was all that chaotic. It doesn't feel any busier than Celtral Station or Southern Cross.

*I live in Sydney and Sydney trains are all double decker meaning it can take twice as much so congestion in stations doesn’t occur as easy as Melbourne*

Melbourne Metro Trains: the infrastructure direly needs replacing in some parts, sometimes Train Replacement Busses are regular part of the service, some services might be late or even cancelled, and extra trains will definitely improve service.
However, to all the staff members, from the control room, the customer service, drivers, cleaning staff on train and at the maintenance depot, to the track maintenance staff members, I would like to say good on you and thank you for all your hard work.
Flinders is not even busy and yet it is pretty inefficient. A real busy station is something like the Osaka-Umeda station or Shinjuku station in Tokyo.

They work for Victoria Police therefore they are Victoria Police members, they are PSO's, who have the same powers as police when it comes to crimes at train stations and other surroundings. They carry firearms and undergo exact same firearm training and defence training as police, but only study at the Academy for 13 weeks, they are very important to the public, as they are great to have at train stations, then police resources are not taken up, and PSO's are trained in dealing with passengers etc. They are important.

They are PSO (Protective Services Officers).; They don't do an alcohol breath test, Drive police cars, or attend to the crime scene. all they do is try to keep the peace at the railway station or bus terminal and I don't think They carry firearms, maybe a taser.
@@podgee7507 PSO's area of operation beyond stations & what that can do and arrest in relation to was expanded. (PSO's stand outside Parliament & other government & related buildings, and have powers)
While initially PSO's duty was just at stations & immediate area, it's much more now. They can also be first response to a crime scene until senior police get there. They do drive police cars but they're unmarked (yes, not as patrols but they are police cars). They do carry firearms. They can arrest persons for breaking any law. They can do breath tests, but just don't have necessary items on site. I know, as read changes & as a mate is a PSO. PSO's on duty, also travel on trains now.
If you want to find out how far their powers extend now & see their gun touch one on the shoulder, from behind! :P. Yes they don't have as much power as usual Police, but they are part of the Victoria Police force, and they do they're training at same places. When at city stations when in groups there's often to see 1 'police' marked vest & a couple 'protective service officer' marked vests. In that situation the PSO's have many powers during an incident given to them by that Police officer.

Having used both Sydney and Melbourne trains I would definitely say Melbourne has fewer interruptions. I think these were just caught on bad days.
using the werribee line everyday it isnt that bad and keep in mind werribe is one of the worst lines ever, delays are at max 10-20 mins and replacement buses happen twice a year

I live in the US but I have family who work in Melbourne. I have been on this train many times and through Flinders Station on the way to Melbourne Museum, where I volunteer. I do remember the unfortunate suicide that happened on the Hurstbridge and I was one of those affected when we had to get off of the train and board busses to Heidelberg. Oh my, what a mess that was. I feel sorry for the unfortunate person who chose to take her life.
Hi Don, yeah that happens in every city here in Australia. I was living in Adelaide in 1995 when a friend who was going to school one morning was sitting in the car with his dad waiting for a train to pass by when a schoolgirl listening to her ipod didn't see the train coming, crossed the train tracks and was sliced in half. I feel sorry for people who live in underpriviledged cities like Adelaide & sydney who take their lives this way, which is understandable as who would want to live in dirty boring places like those! Go Melbourne, Go the Vics!
safly, the incident response people become desensitised. Ive been on active duty, then worked as a village cop- saw plenty of maimed bodies. I was actually in traffic when someone either ignored the gates or was deaf or drug affected (I never found out) and ten cars behind I saw the red mist of the impact. A lot of great people did their best to hide the remains till more copd could come. Very nasty. Poor van man who got front row seat + human debtis was treated for shock, lorry driver opposite had seen it all before. Tragic. The worst is telling the family.

100% agreed. Red rattlers and Harris trains were great. The Comengs (1983) were great too. Dont like these newer trains, they are ugly!
I swear I thought Sydney was more busy? I went to flinders st station and it was Lowkey empty. Central station is always busy no matter the time of day. I’m confused
its really work hour dependent and covid fucked it, going to the city at 7-8 in the morning on weekdays most trains are full people packed
Central Station in Sydney is definitely busy but this is for a UK audience so they can make up any old stuff they like.

FYI - Shinjuku Station is actually the "world's busiest railway station" with an average of 3.5 million passing through its doors every day (compared to Flinder Street station of approx 110,000 per day) :)
