    This is the best socket rail idea I have ever seen. I'm currently making a 332 peice tool set with this same system. I am painting the metric rails black, sae rails red, and specialty rails (torx, hex, etc) silver so they are easier to spot. As an auto body technician this idea is going to make my work alot more efficient. Thank you for the idea and video!!!

    Great idea- thank you for sharing. I used inexpensive laminate "flooring" boards from the local depot store combined with your idea (99cent socket holders) to accomplish the same style of organizers. Now my sockets "stand up" in my tool drawer for easy visibility. Again thank you for taking the time to share!

    I saw this video a while and actually bought some more of those strips to do this, then I forgot about it. I am going to have to get it done. I love how organized they are.

    Thanks for sharing this. I used your idea and it is working out great. I had some extra cheap laminate floor boards lying around- and screwed two columns of tracks so that I could have the taller sockets and short sockets on the same board. Works out better when I'm putting these sockets a tool bag - going on the road.

    I've been looking for this video for a while, just to say thank you for the idea.
    I found it a couple of years ago, when I bought a bigger tool chest, and was looking for a better way to organize my sockets. I wound up building somewhere around 20 of these for my top drawer of my chest (72" US General) and my sockets are now neatly organized, and easy to find. The wood now has greasy fingerprints here and there.
    It's amazing how effective the cheap 99 cent rails are when you fasten them to a piece of wood. They're flimsy by themselves, but this is nice.
    Thanks again, it's been pretty nice, and I've got less than $4.00 each in them.

    Thanks for the idea! I have piles and piles of sockets. I formed an idea while watching:
    Tack a drawer-lock type rod on the left, so you can slide the left edge of the rail under it. Cut slits on the right to slide another rod in. Now the rails are held down, so you can just rip the socket out without flinging the rail all over. And the slide-out side allows you to still remove the rails.

    Right now my sockets are all loose in the drawer. This is such an easy solution and will really help my disorganized mess. The one thing I would suggest like another comment made is to label their sizes in front of the rack. Not being nit picky or anything, it is just that I spend a lot of time picking up my sockets and trying to see if I have the right size. It happens when you get old like me...

  • @MarzNet256
    @MarzNet256 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That burp is the best intro ever. Real nice socket rails. I need to make a couple for some mixed drive size sockets. FYI: It's 1 x 2 stock which is actually 3/4 x 1-1/2. The wood is cut to the larger dimensions, kiln dried which causes some warpage, then milled down to the to final dimensions to make it straighter and squarer. Really old lumber is the actual original dimension.

    My dad used to do this, without the handle and it comes in handy to keep tools organized, keep tools clean and organized and you wont spend 20, 30 minutes looking for a specific socket lol

  • @pjm329

    There is a lot of space between sockets in those drawers. I have that many sockets in one drawer. I've been using craftsman plastic socket rails and they work very well. I also carry them in the field and have yet to break one, even loaded with half inch deep sockets.

  • @keithnoneya
    @keithnoneya 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Like it, varnish those rails and use a fine pitch sharpi and mark the spots. You'll never guess which one you're missing again.
    Very nice vid and tool set up. Now go get em dirty! Best Wishes n Blessings Keith

    • @BlackKnight6667
      @BlackKnight6667 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As he mentioned the ability to reposition them as a benifit, marking the spots would not be a smart thing to do. Putting a finish on it I agree with, At least to prevent grease and other oils from getting on and soaked in where you could not get it out..

    What is really good about this design is you can add extra socket holders for sockets that you have multiples of the same size.

  • @Lapeerphoto
    @Lapeerphoto 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am redoing part of my tools. This is a good idea. I have several metal holders with the plastic handles (that you mention), but I don't like them because they seem flimsy getting sockets on and off. Mounting them like this would totally fix that!
    I want mine Color-Coded by Dive-Size, and SAE or Metric, for quick access.
    Thanks for sharing your project. It's given me an option. Cheers!

    They are expensive , but I recently tried the Torin socket rails from Lowes. I am crazy about them. They have a magnetic strip on the reverse side so that the whole set of sockets can be taken to where you are workint. The sockets lock on the rail very positively and they come off with just a gentle counterclockwise twist. The rails cost about 17 dollars each but I can see a lifetime of use and I love the way they work.

    A 2x4 is a 2x4 when it is rough sawed out of the log. After it is kiln dried it is milled down to its final smooth size of 1 1/2 x 3 1/2.

  • @utoopuser
    @utoopuser 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    miller highlife? mmmmm good choice of beer! very good idea thanks for posting. btw the reason they call it a 2x4 is because the 1.5 x 3.5 pc of wood started out as a rough 2x4 inch pc of wood stock, then ran through the planer to make smooth. they cut a net 2" x 4" out of a log... peace

    They look great. I, too, didn't care for those commercial units with the handle that tips upward; they look they're about to fall over. They're not wide enough to be stable, and I just didn't care for their appearance. I made several like yours, but without the handle, using some scrap marine plywood that I got at work. I attached the thin socket rails to them with drywall screws, and I was good to go. I don't use my sockets that much, so it was mostly a means to organize them in my toolbox. I 've noticed it's a real pain to remove them from the clips when I do need to use them, so I'm not sure I did myself much of a favor. Later on, I purchased some Mechanic's Time Saver socket holders (deep or shallow plastic bodies with a magnetic strip underneath to hold the sockets in place) and like those a lot. Obviously, they're not cheap at around $18 to $20 each, but I found them to be more convenient. Something else to consider about storage is how deep (tall) the drawer is that you're using. Deep sockets can be a problem in a shallow drawer, and seemingly no manufacturer makes durable socket trays that lay down at a 30 degree angle. The only way to get them is to buy full sets of sockets off a tool truck, and the trays are usually flexible plastic (i.e., throwaway). Their main purpose is to entice you to buy the set and additional holders. If they offered durable socket trays that laid down to display your sockets by size (similar to the manner in which wrench trays do), they'd be flying off the shelves. The only problem I see is that some socket brands are wider than others, but they could be sized by brand to allow for that.

      A good mechanic keeps his tools and shop squeaky clean and organized. Otherwise you spend half your time searching for tools and parts. Shit gets lost and parts get mixed up in a messy shop. The worst part is you get grit on critical part surfaces such as cam lobes, crank journals, etc. Grease on brake rotors, and so on.

    • @tynanroyhiggins
      @tynanroyhiggins 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +John Long a clean shop is a quiet shop..... I am OCD and keep a meticulous work area and a thoroughly organised tool box but I am not as quick as a messy technician. Jaguar Land Rover is not the easiest brand to work on but sometimes a mess is inevitable.

      @@Zombunist I was thinking they are a new set of tools setup right. My Dad was a jet mechanic and kept his tools in cutouts so as not tool was left behind ... in a jet engine. We recently moved and my tool chest was dropped, about a foot off the ground on to grass & dirt but enough that all my tools were scrambled inside! What a mess but at least they were in each drawer. Your idea would have me just turning the strips back right side up!

    2x4 was a 2x4 when it was "rough" cut. Finishing takes 1/4" off each side - resulting in a 1 1/2 x 3 1/2. Look at it like them adding a finishing service to your lumber since you'd have to do it anyway if you bought it in the rough.

    • @richardryerson
      @richardryerson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can, just order rough cut lumber. This is a 2x4 finished dimension. This is the way the dimensions are reported. And it's for a reason, not because the advertisers are lying to you.
      The dimensions are of rough dimensions always so there is no confusions and if the wrong product is given, you can recover from that mistake. The industry, including consumers, have known the difference between rough and finish dimensions for hundreds of years.
      Improvise, Adapt and Overcome.In other words, stop whining and get with the program.

    That's a great idea. I have some of those socket rails already but they're useless to try and use in a tool bag, all the sockets fall off anyhow LOL. Putting them in a drawer in the toolbox would be a great way to use them, if I ever get my tool chest inside like I want it...it has sat outside on my carport for the past 14 years. I have that same US General tool chest setup, it works great, but I may need to upgrade to at least the 56" and this time buy the end cabinets as well since they no longer make my 44" I can't get the end cabinets for that old style setup :(.

    • @Zombunist
      @Zombunist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive found them to be pretty handy. They do eat up some space, but for me, thats a good reason to buy more toolboxes! Frankly, I would rather eat the room just so the drawers are truly dedicated to sockets. Knowing myself that extra space would wind up with random junk had it not been filled with the handle portions.

    Wow, nice job of organizing sockets! My only gripe with those metal socket rails is that they are somewhat frustrating getting the sockets on and off the holding clip... and after time, the clips get deformed... and need replacing. One thing is for certain, the metal rails are leaps and bounds ahead of randomly tossing sockets in a drawer.

    Nice idea, if I could help you I would say slow down the camera movement as it detracts from the excellent video. Or drink less beer, that may steady the camera.

      Haha, thanks for the tip. That was the only beer I had that day, so we'll have to blame my developing. Camera skills.

    Nice set up.
    What's with the van, a friend cut the front off a van to make a trailer out of it, but before he got much more into it he decided it was going to be way to heavy so he gave up on the idea.

    • @Zombunist
      @Zombunist  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is in the final stages of becoming a trailer, the main hold up is money as it is SOOO heavy its going to need its of set of brakes. I need to put about $700 into the new axle, brakes, tires, etc. I have a few videos about it on my channel. Its called the "Green Bean." Clever, huh?

    I got rid of my metal rails cuz the rust easy especially when their stored for long time. Yes I put lube on but the metal edges scrapes the inside conecters
