Thank you for the work you did to provide us with this very valuable information. What I did as an expat in Mexico is just buy a car in Mexico that's already Mexico-plated. Yes I'm supposed to pay taxes on it every year but I can come and go across the border with zero hassle, and there's no emissions or inspection burden in my Mexican state. In order to register it in your actual name you will need to go through the trouble of getting a Mexican drivers license though, which means you'll need to go through the trouble of getting legal residence.
Living in Oklahoma here and the housing market here over the last 7-8 years is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Homes that were bought for $130K in 2015 are now being sold for $590k. I’m talking about tiny, disgusting, poorly built 950 square foot shit boxes in quite mediocre neighborhoods. Then you’ve got Better, average sized homes in nicer neighborhoods that were $300K+ 10 years ago selling for $750k+ now. Wild times.
A recession as bad it can be, provides good buying opportunities in the markets if you’re careful and it can also create volatility giving great short time buy and sell opportunities too. This is not financial advise but get buying, cash isn’t king at all in this time!
This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.
Insightful... I was curious about her, so I looked her up online. I discovered her website, and I must say that she seems knowledgeable. I sent her an email outlining my goals. I appreciate you sharing.
SD is also a state that allows full timers to have a physical address without acutely owning property, this lets you have a PO Box to receive snail mail and other paperwork and registration of vehicles as your residence. America’s Mailbox Box Elder, SD check them out.
This changed the entire trajectory of my life for the better. Again, thank you so much, Kathy! Saints like you giving out wisdom is normally priceless but totally quantifiable in this case.
@@goofballbiscuits3647 happy to help. Used this service from 07 to 2020 as a full timer. If you checked with America’s Mailbox they will even go and get your plate renewals for you and the first renewal of an SD drivers license can be done online.
It's funny you say that. I picked up the owners of that place from the airport (lyft) once filled every God damn inch of my car with baggage and trunk 20 plus bags and listened to their arrogant bs for 15 minutes for a two dollar tip. Total assheads
This ease of registration and license is one if the reasons i moved to SD. I used to be a truck driver for over a decade. While I was trucking my license was about to expire in 2019, so I called my state of CA, they said that they need: 1, 2 forms of proof of residence, my address at the time was my parents address. I cound do that. 2. They needed me to do my vehicle inspection and smog check every year. I was home once every 2 years. That didn't work for me. Then i found that SD can get you residency and registration in 24 hours. Me and my ex drove to sd and got it all done in 24 hours. We got SD CDL and plates in hand. Now I moved to SD cuz its beautiful here
@@pdzhI have like 6 licenses you can retain your old license you just need to use a hole punch to put a hole in it where the expiration date is and never carry it as proof of id it in invalid but you can keep it as sorta a keepsake
It is also possible to get an SD driver's license after spending only ONE night in the state. I moved overseas (not Mexico) last September and swapped out my former state for an SD license after only spending one night there. You arrive in the afternoon, spend the night, and then go to the DMV in the morning (make an appt ahead of time - VERY important). Fill out the paperwork and you can walk out with a SD driver's license in hand. This will make you an SD resident from that moment. Depending on the state that you came from (laws vary from state to state), it is likely that if you have not spent more than 183 days of the current calendar year in your former state, you will be entitled to a full refund of all state taxes paid. Just did my federal and state taxes for 2023 and listed SD as my residence. I filed a part-time state return with my former state and was already approved for a full refund of all state taxes paid. This is not legal or financial advice. It is just my personal experience and knowledge of how the work the system in your favor.
@@VagrantCode You need to use a mail forwarding service. I use Dakota Post and have had no issues with getting items sent to me overseas. You will put the address that your mail forwarding service provides to you as your SD license address. I hope that helps clarify the issue.
Having done this in South Dakota i can say that the information here is absolutely correct. I can all be done online and the don't need to see your car ever since they have no mandatory smog checks. -Marc
How long did the process take start to finish? Just purchase a van via private sale and hoping to register and insurance it in SD and get the plates and hit the road ASAP
@@melissahall4942, One afternoon. we did it in person in SD. After paying the registration we got the plates with away. It did take about four weeks to receive the title in the mail though.

One of my customers had South Dakota plates and I asked him if he had a second home in South Dakota and he said no. He had them specifically to avoid the excise taxes in our state.
Some states have laws that require new registration and plates within 30 days after establishing domicile. These laws were enacted to prevent tax dodgers from avoiding onerous annual tax bills for registering your car.
Actually I did notice that when I was in Los cabos Baja California, I saw hundreds of trucks with South Dakota license plates, I just thought ppl from SD were moving to Mexico in big numbers but now it makes sense
I live in Hawaii. For the last few years I have wanted to have a small RV on the mainland but the insurance companies wouldn't allow that because logically the vehicle would never be at its "home". So the SD registration is what works.
Wayne you’re probably the type of guy that refuses to wash his finger after poking through the toilet paper when wiping your ass… don’t worry, your secret is safe with us.
South Dakota made a deliberate decision to be welcoming to full-time travelers, passing legislation to make it happen. More than just having a car registered there, I'm also a registered voter and have a SD drivers license (which I renewed ON LINE for the first time). I also renew my vehicle registration ON LINE, as well. The annual registration fee is higher than my previous residence, but there is no annual personal property tax and vehicle safety inspections. I use a mail forwarding service, so there is no issue getting all my important DOR/County Treasurer's Office information.
@@niyablake Driver's license and registration are not required for personal travel in a private automobile. By registering your car you relinquish interest to the STATE, that is why they then require taxes (rent), license (permission) and can seize it and take it from you whenever they want. Just like your children if they were produced under a STATE Marriage LICENSE and REGISTERED with a birth certificate.
The people at Clay County (shout out to Sarah and Danielle) are great to work with. The best part? No emissions or safety tests and renewals can be done over the phone/online.
Marcie is also great! If you call them, she will explain everything and email you all the requirements. We did this primarily for the lack of yearly emissions/inspection requirement. Not needing to have US vehicle insurance when you cross into Mexico is a bonus.
I 'moved' to SD from CO prior to seeking residency in Mexico. I wasn't bringing a car, but I got rid of State Income Tax, only have to renew my ID every 5 years (spend one night), and I have virtual mail service.
@@williamb8479 Correct. If you work with the SDRC, they will walk you through the whole thing. You have to spend the night initially and your SD address has to be on your hotel or campground receipt. After that, renewals are easy. The DMV's there are all very familiar with the program, the hotel I stayed at was basically in the parking lot of the DMV and hotel checkout reprinted my receipt with the updated South Dakota address on it (different than my credit card I reserved with at the time.)
This is great info for active duty military members where it's normal and legal to have different state tags on their cars than the state they live in. I have one car tagged with Texas and one with NC where I'm currently stationed. NC has annual taxes (though it can get reimbursed with contacting the local county office with military pay LES) and annoying auto safety inspections. I could get a South Dakota tag and avoid both of those.
@@Golgi-Gyges -- For a small minority of the Texas residents, that is true... The vast majority of people in Texas live within the large metro areas that are still subject to the emissions testing... And even for those who live outside the large metro areas, they aren't saving any money with the removal of inspections since it just means that the regular license fee goes up...
@@Golgi-Gyges I would be changing my NC plated car instead of the TX one. Would it be best to start this process in a few months when its January 2024? Luckily my next NC renewal and inspection is in February so i could skirt that by changing to SD tags anytime before then.
@@stevemcgowen The whole point of the video is moving to Mexico with SD plates. Where the hell are you getting "MAGAts" from? Are you trolling for an argument?
Getting a South Dakota address and a driver’s license were almost as easy. The hard part was taking the time to fly into Rapid City for the driver’s license.
There are multiple “virtual mailbox” companies there (find with google). I’ve been using mine for over a year now. When main arrives at my South Dakota address they will scan an image of the envelope and e-mail it to me. I then have the option of things like opening and scanning the contents, forwarding to a different address (that usually costs around $1.50 per envelope), or destroy it (good for the occasional junk stuff.) The other benefit to my SD license plate is that I can renew my annual registration over the internet and have the new stickers sent anywhere in the USA. My old state required an annual vehicle inspection and was a problem when my car was in Mexico during the renewal period.
This would may be useful for buying a schoolbus and titling it as an RV, if your state is restrictive about such things. Get the SD title - registering it as an RV - then use the SD title to re-register where you live.
This doesn't even take into account how EFFING CHEAP our annual license plate fees are compared to most other states. Also, establish an address in SD as your home-of-record (but NOT in Pennington or Minnehaha counties) because we also have some of the cheapest insurance rates in the country.
Just moved to SD from NE. Registration on 2 vehicles & RV went from almost $1,000 to less than $300. Nice. Insurance on same 3 actually went up approx. $22 per vehicle per year. Hail & deer we were told. Fair enough!
The legislature of South Dakota just meet and changed some of the laws concerning people coming and getting residence here and not living here. I'm not sure what changed but people need to check how this affects what just passed and the governor signed it into law.
There used to be a business in Madison, SD that basically did all of this for you, very similar to the privately owned license plate service places in a lot of other states. It was called MyDakotaAddress and they were great. I used them for several years as a full-time RVer. There are others out there now but I can't vouch for them as haven't used them. They work pretty much the same way though. Oddly, the only thing that turned out to be a bit more than what I was used to in AZ was car insurance. I think had something to do with hail and/or deer but that might be something I dreamed.
MyDakotaAddress went suddenly belly-up a few years ago, leaving a LOT of full-time travelers scrambling for options. I switched to YourBestAddress in Sioux Falls and they're terrific to work with.
I am very interesting in the insurance coverage angle. Insurance rates are very high in Detroit Mi. Can you tell me your experience with insurance coverage?
I registered my dirtbike as an on-road motorcycle thru SD. (I don't live in SD). The folks at the Pennington County Treasurer's office are super nice too. That reminds me, I have to call and renew my registration!
I'm not sure about this? But SD uses "plates" to identify off-highway vehicles? So is your dirtbike registered that way? Or is the body type listed as a motorcycle, or coded as a street bike?
@@Chris-gi9chfor a dirt bike to be street legal, it has to have mirrors, a horn, turn signals, headlight and tailgate , and lighted license plate frame. You have to sign a document saying your bike has all that, and they’ll issue the plate.
As a South Dakota resident, I love that we allow this! Actually, there's a billion advantages to living here but taking money from other states residents in return for a couple of metal plates while avoiding the increased expenses to infrastructure to support them all is a win for both parties. If you are looking for a great state to move to though, I strongly suggest you add SD to the short list!
Your mileage may vary as they say. I’ve lived all over the country courtesy of my professional life and this is by far the best state I’ve ever lived in. Since this prison has no bars, why not escape to somewhere more compatible with your expectations?
@@douglaseuritt3919 SD used to be nice until people started moving here, now the major thing it had going for it has been lost. As for me, my obligations keep me here soon I will be free of said obligations.
What is so wonderful and accomodating about South Dakota is #1, you get a human being on the phone! #2 is that they allow one to legally register their car, regardless of its physical location (you are subject to local laws and Mexico doesn't care, as long as it is legally registered) under their "Vagabond Provision." You are supposed to be insured where you drive and you cannot insure a non-registered car. This provision kindly allows us to insure our cars and drive with insurance, basically required everywhere. Also, the importation of older cars is now available for certain non-luxury, recently titled cars. In Baja the import fee is just 1500 pesos, plus a valid Baja drivers license and residency. Im thinking of doing this.
The thing is South Dakota calls its residents to be on a 6 month jury duty. It is regardless of where you actually live but where your mailing address is. You are required to call in every Friday to see if you need to show up on the following Monday. Be cautious.
You need to have insurance to get registered not the other way around because the registration is what give you plates dmv asks for proof of insurance to get registration hopefully you mistyped
We Travel Cross Country Once a Year. ALL our vehicles are registered in South Dakota. No Mandatory Insurance and No Bi Yearly Smog Checks. The Registration Fee$ Are Much Less Expensive. It's NEVER Been a problem.
Unfortunately in NJ the cops will pull you over if they see the same out of state plate over several months time. Then they will inform you that you must register your vehicle in NJ if you are living there. So the only work around would be to get a SD driver's license and address and tell them you're just visiting.
@@scosal7100 That can happen in California also. If a cop or a highway patrol officer notices that you and your car has out of state plates they can cite you for not having a current registration if you've been in California with that car. I know that when someone moves to California you do need to get all paper work done within a certain amount of time.
I got South Dakota plates when I got a SMOG notice on my Nevada renewal. The costs of both time and money traveling to Nevada for such a small detail would have been significant.
What if you want to stay in the US and register vehicles in SD for the purpose of avoiding your state of residence personal property tax? Some states tax nearly everything you own (vehicles, boats, RVs, trailers, etc) every single year. You pay sales taxes at the time of purchase, license fees and then they charge you every year for the priveledge of owning it and living in their state. It's frequently hundreds of dollars based upon the value of the vehicle.
@@108nate5 My neighbors have more important things to do but if you are pulled over by the police there will be questions to answer. It could result in a violation because the driver's license address doesn't match the vehicle registration. I had company vehicles registered in Ohio but lived in Ky, with Ky license. I was stopped at a DUI check point. The cop started to write me up and when I explained that my company was based in Ohio he argued with me for a few minutes and then tore up the ticket.
I have a Cali drivers license and several vehicles with SD registration that lists my Cali address...yes that's right... says south dakota registration and then lists my Cali po box, which matches my Cali license and insurance documents... been pulled over without issue or even mention....
I had read years ago Clay County had discontinued new out-of-state registrations, and that they would continue to honor and "grandfather" cars already with SD plates and allow them to re-register. I guess it was incorrect info or Clay County reversed their policy. What ex-pats in Mexico need to know is Mexico prohibits foreigners with permanent residency from driving foreign plated vehicles. Foreigners with temporary residency or 6 month tourist visas may drive foreign plated vehicles. The prohibition is almost never enforced. When Mexican police do detect this violation, they are more likely to solicit a bribe, than take official action. If a bribe is solicited and you decide to pay one, I recommend you say to the cop you only have $200 pesos (about $12 USD), and as long as the cop doesn't see that you have more, they are likely accept whatever you say you have. I know of a Mexican who paid as little as $50 pesos (about $3 USD) bribe. I'm amazed at how small a bribe Mexican police are willing to accept. So, when foreigners gain permanent residency they must either nationalize their vehicle and pay a high import tax, or, sell it or stop driving it. Before, the vehicle had to be driven to the border, but I read somewhere that Mexico had relaxed that requirement.
My wife and I established our Domicile in Box Elder, SD when we were full time RVers. 2 other big domiciles for RVers are Texas and Florida. But SD was the cheapest at the time (low tax rates), so we went with them.

Thanks for a good video, very informative. Man, I wish I knew about this a year ago! I had to spend over $1,800 to get a trivial system (automatic grill shutters) on my car repaired last year, so that I could pass an emissions test before I renewed my car's IL tags.
One time a old MexicanAmerican man had his pickup registered in both countries every time he crossed the border he change the plates. One day the border patrol saw this and they hold him for a while but when they checked everything they let him go.

It’s also the easiest way to get a plate and make a dual sport out of dirt bikes. Especially here in California it’s next to impossible to take an old bike and register it for the road. Just go through SD haha I have many friends with plated 2 strokes! 😂
Hopefully this lasts.... Unlike Mexico who welcomes the foreign visitors and their money... the CHP and California DMV has a way of thwarting stuff like this.
@@malcorub yes. You mentioned as an aside that many people in Mexico have LLCs -- not sure if US, Canadian, or Mexico. I'd love to see a video about that....How do people handle their affairs, 183-day rule vs. paying Mexican taxes, what are the implications...??
LLCs are a passthrough entity if they are single member this means you are not taxed as a company you are taxed personally. So if you have an LLC in Wyoming or Delaware there are no taxes and you get the advantages of being in the US such as no withholding taxes. This is only really beneficial if you are a foreigner (non US citizen/resident) with a business that operates outside of the US and you live in a country with a terrotorial tax system like Costa Rica or Cayman Islands (not Mexico) then you pay no taxes. If you didn't have the LLC and had US income it would be subject to withholding taxes at 30%. Many people mess up their taxes going to Mexico because there are some grey areas on when you are temporary resident in Mexico and I'm sure most people set up an LLC to avoid paying any tax and they keep most of their money in a US personal account or account offshore or in another country neutral like Ireland or the UK. Just be careful who is giving you information and speak to tax experts. That is where I aquired all my knowledge from. The tax expert I spoke to in Mexico said foreigners often commit tax fraud in Mexico and the government is clamping down on it. Qroo Paul is one of my favourite TH-camrs for Mexico info!
You just get a Wyoming or South Dakota LLC as a disregarded entity. Put an asset in it to anonymized it (eg house). If something goes to court, you will be deanonymized, and the corporate Vail will be pierced (obviously it doesn’t actually protect your assets as it’s not a legitimate business, it’s actually just you).
OMG! I have a 94 cherokee and I am in nj. I want those so bad now! How does having a cdl with hazmat and air brakes work work with getting a sd license?
In Texas, if you are stopped for a traffic violation, have a Texas driver’s license with a Texas address AND a vehicle registration with your name on it that is not from Texas, you will get a ticket for improper registration. Texas gives out of state vehicles that move to Texas 30 days to change to Texas tags.
I know is is not apples to appels, but careful. My son in law did this in Missouri. He was stoped for speeding and 3 weeks later dept of motor vehicles sent an agent out to his house. Lucky enough for him Missouri said they would go after SD for what he paid there. All he had to do is pay the difference to Missouri and a 25% penalty. Moral of the story. Missouri has a department set up for seeking SD tag owners who live in MO. if you think other states don’t have have this then you don’t understand how bad they want the taxes.
Definitely looking into this I'm currently living in California, and California DMV is a big cartel annually registration can cost most $700 depending how new your vehicle is.

You can't live in the US and have a vehicle registered in another state. If you listened to the video, he says Mexico. If you live in California, you are required to have a CA driver license and registration within 20 days of becoming a resident. You will get stopped and given a citation. Every state has a law like that, it ranges from 10 days to 30 days. Registration fees go towards maintaining the roadways. States look at it as you are driving a vehicle in their state, using their roads, putting wear on their roads, but paying to maintain another state's roads. Most states classify a resident as ANYONE being in the states for a period longer than 20-30 days in a calendar year. You are also a resident if you work in the state, or accept benefits not offered to non-residents. You won't be able to live in CA and get SD plates since you live and work in CA, its illegal, and is easy to figure out if stopped since your license will be in CA and vehicle plates in SD. You can't have one or the other.

Can you get handicapped plates as well? My wife is disabled and both our vehicles have hc plates. It is a nightmare getting them here in CA...well everything at the DMV is a nightmare here.
I got a handicap permit for mom. I was using my car to drive her around. It wasn't that big an issue. I got the note from the doctor as requested and went to DMV to get it taken care of.
When I lived in Connectishit, I paid for emissions tests, registration, AND property tax. Even for a not so new car it would still be in the hundreds of dollars every year. Some states even have vehicle inspections. That's a definite ripoff for consumers, and also a nice subsidy for the repair shops. Theyll say it's for safety but the worst part of inspections is that there's ZERO evidence that vehicle inspection states are any safer than non inspection states. At least I was never subjected to that. When I moved to Tennessee, the registration was about the same, but no property tax, and no pesky emissions tests. In fact even house property taxes are roughly 10% of the taxes in Connectishit. Blue states tend to have the most expensive government fees and higher taxes. They also tend to regulate you to death.
yet, the southern states are generally in far worse shape overall than the north states . Income, poverty, welfare recipients, public schools.....all worse in the south
So true! Here in Western Washington my car tax is just under $400 per year. The huge portion of this tax is for building commuter rail lines in Seattle...... a place I never visit and these commuter lines will never get closer than 20 miles to my home in my lifetime
@mellocello187 That isn't true. It's that the population density is quite low, thus fewer vehicles per square whatevers. Fewer vehicles mean less pollution.
@mellocello187 So what do you propose? Make larger cities be different than the rest of the state? I don't think you're going to get anywhere with whatever your "solution" you might have. It doesn't sound like Tennessee is your state anyway making it none of your business. I moved to Tennessee to get away from that crap. I'm free here compared to left wing Connecticut.
The borough where I live in Alaska gets a large amount of the registration fee to pay for police and emergency services. If the vehicle is more than 6 years old we pay a one time registration fee of $100 and get a forever registration as long as we own it. We get the letter Z to,put where the year goes on the license plate. All our vehicles, utility trailer and camp trailer have the Z.

My son was going to do this exact same thing before he moved overseas. Then he decided to rent his house here out rather than sell it. I have a friend of sorts that moved to Mexico a week after he retired. He and his wife love it. I've never been to Mexico in my life, and TBH, as pretty as it is, I doubt I'll make it now. I'm old and that ship has sailed. I love the food and people from Mexico that I grew up with on the west side of Chicago. The family dynamic is incredible and OMG the food. So awesome. Cheers Pauly.
We were in Sequoia National Park and I saw a car with Hawaii plates. I asked her how her drive from Hawaii was? She said her husband was in the military and it was shipped from Hawaii for free.
There's another workaround to this, in NJ at least. In NJ if you don't have personal car insurance, the insurance companies report you to DMV and they suspend your license and registration. If you have the car in the name of a business, that doesn't happen.
I want to import one of my older civics into Panamá. They too have a restriction on importing cars older than 10 years. So I'm thinking about just driving it down through Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica into Panamá on the US plates, then see if I can finagle something at the vehicle registration office in Panamá (bribe 😂).
Bob Jankovic old school NY guy lives in Cabo san lucas Baja Sur in mx he does this just did it on my Range Rover solid dude! he has lived in Cabo for 20 years thats why every single car you see if sd plates I travel to Cabo every winter I finally asked someone there like bob is the man go visit him at his office LOL
I live in Florida and don't remember to have seen any SD license plate running around. I'm not sure on how long you can drive a car with a foreign tag in Florida being a Floridian.
What if your vehicle was previously registered in a no sales tax state, ie ..NH , DE, MT? Will you pay sales tax to register in SD or even FL for that matter?
The car insurance must be much cheaper than in New Mexico. People do the same thing here in New York, except they use plates from North Carolina, South Carolina or Florida.
We (Australia) have this too! My new van is registered in South Australia (less than 2M people in the whole state, 1.2M from them in state capital Adelaide) - no inspections, no separate CTP insurance (some basic one included in rego), no legal requirement to reside in the state, you only have to provide "garaging address" and have valid mail address (anywhere, mine is in NSW where I live) to receive fine notices and other stuff. In my case I own land in SA, but it is not critical, moreover their system messed everything up and originally registered to address where I lived 15 years ago. Very convenient and much cheaper than in NSW, especially for light commercial vehicles.
The big questions are; Do you need a SD address? Can I transfer my current (not recently purchased) vehicle thats currently registered in another state (CA) and list my current address (not in SD)? Thank you - if anyone replies.
I thought you needed SD address and used a mail forwarding service that will also visit SD DMV/Treasurer and do business in person on your behalf via power of attorney for each specific vehicle, but year two, when renewing, found that was unnecessary and changed address so my SD registration list my Cali address, which matches my Cali license, and insurance docs... been pulled over a few times and it's not even mentioned...
My statefarm insurance agent found this odd. I have tags from two states on two different cars. He said it was illegal but i have homes in 2 different states.
Personally we found it easier to sell our US cars in the states and buy a new car in Mexico. The Mexican made cars are great and priced lower than the US. If you're going to live full time in Mexico why not go legal and not take the easy way out. The SD plates I see here in Playa stand out like a sore thumb......will the policia pick on you? Maybe.
I agree with your recommendation and would definitely look at buying in MX, my challenge is moving our large dog as we planned to drive her down along with taking our luggage. Thoughts?
Yes that's great. my thoughts are like where I live, your required to get this states tags and registration transferred onto this state after 30 or 60 days. they do enforce it.
did I miss how insurance works? You could do this in the US too? If you live in Nevada but want to have a lower cost of ownership by having SD tags, then how would insurance work? Insurance typically wants the car to be insured where it's parked overnight. Love this concept.
It's gotta be tricky, at least here in the People's Republic of Kalifornski. They want you to reg. in Calif. if you're here more than 30 days, even if your home address is elsewhere. It might work if we somehow can get a SD address.
@@KutWritethey can't force someone to register a vehicle in a state simply because they were there past 30 days if you don't live there a car can only be registered in one state then returning you would have to buy a new license plate in your state they have no jurisdiction on a visiting car or driver. Constitution says no unreasonable or unfair penalties or fees
Hmm? I might be able to do this in Tennessee, too. We renew drivers' licenses every eight years, and I think we can renew them online. We got rid of vehicle inspections and emissions last year and can renew our tags online. We don't have state income tax, and the only part I'm not certain about is insurance requirements. Any Tennesseans know if US insurance is required to hold license and tags?

One of the problems with California is vehicles. I took a one year job in Indiana. Drove my California car there and registered it there. Then when I returned I had to pay for that year for California plate registration plus a fine for not registering it that year or pay a compliance assessment fee for for bringing in a non California vehicle. The real insult was the car was originally sold as new in California. I guess Mexico also would be too convenient to cruise between them for extended periods. It turned out that is was cheaper to store the California car & pay the annual car tax. Buy a Indiana car and sell it in Indiana. So how did California get around interstate commerce? Well for some reason I have a problem finding out when interstate tariffs were declared illegal as part of early U S constitution law. But I have a feeling it was connected with the commerce regulation of using tariffs to move household goods from state to state. I guess keeping are cars in a garages makes them household goods? That precedence has spread to other states like Michigan. Well I guess South Dakota has found a way to cash in other other states need for mo money. I don't think a motor cycle would be treated any different. Unless it does not have a plate or ever had a plate. But given time time the legislature will find a way to tax more.

This ease of registration and license is one if the reasons i moved to SD. I used to be a truck driver for over a decade. While I was trucking my license was about to expire in 2019, so I called my state of CA, they said that they need: 1, 2 forms of proof of residence, my address at the time was my parents address.

And this marks the beginning of the end of the SD plate scheme
It used to be Oregon
SD plates are the best and kudos to you for a perfect detail of how to do this...also can't say enough about Clay Countys staff, you can actually TALK to someone if you call! Go ahead and do this.
you know if clay county office will work with out of state residents for vehicle registration ?
Absolutely
@@boboosdyke7038 thank you for the swift response , I have called 5 of the multiple county offices they have and haven’t found an office that deals with out of state residents yet but the only way I can get started is by finding one that does … Thank you sir
So much effort +intent put into collating all this critical info! And so seamlessly +simply presented. THANK YOU for saving the people all the running around from one office to another, all the dead-end phone calls, all the red tape!
I mean I wouldn’t do this to a vehicle I was driving everyday but for like an off road rock crawler or a pumped up sport car you can’t smog anymore in Ca or a dirt bike etc. something that gets driven occasionally I wouldn’t be too worried. Shoot seems like CHP has bigger fish to fry these days. I can’t count how many vehicles I see everyday that have tinted all the windows including windshield and seem to not get hassled.
You mentioned as an aside that many people in Mexico have LLCs -- not sure if US, Canadian, or Mexico. I'd love to see a video about that....How do people handle their affairs, 183-day rule vs. paying Mexican taxes, what are the implications...??
Qroo has video on that.
Delicately
You just get a Wyoming or South Dakota LLC as a disregarded entity. Put an asset in it to anonymized it (eg house). If something goes to court, you will be deanonymized, and the corporate Vail will be pierced (obviously it doesn’t actually protect your assets as it’s not a legitimate business, it’s actually just you).
@@benchoflemons398 Vail, Colorado? Vail, Iowa? Huh?
The best part about registering is SD is putting Sioux nation plates on your Jeep Cherokee!
OMG! I have a 94 cherokee and I am in nj. I want those so bad now! How does having a cdl with hazmat and air brakes work work with getting a sd license?
That's awesome. Kinda jealous. 😊
I have a WJ!!
Except many other states require any vehicle on their roads for X amount of time to be registered in said State regardless of where you actually live.
@@ShaggyRogers1 Ca Nazi laws - 3 mos in state you MUST change your Reg and Licenses..unless you can prove you are in CA working and intend to go home...otherwise you get Huge fines and they impound your vehicle...they tried it with me, but OR has a special pass due to the prison guards at pelican bay and contract FFs living in OR but working in CA,,,otherwise you are screwed
Yup CA DMV are f****** criminal pirates
You are correct in this assessment. Funny how CA loves taking money from people but when people get smart. CA gets pissed.
Thanks for explaining the SD Plate process.
I hope you get the 100k subscribers
already registered 3 cars since i first saw this video.
thank you so much.
new york became dificult to pass inspection so all my 3 cars are now registered in south dakota.

You do a great job making informative videos.
@mellocello187 Every state has denser population centers. Otherwise yes, I am averaging the entire state. That's the fact.
All our vehicles, utility trailer and camp trailer have the Z.
some do Montana, we all want no smog ck every 2 yrs , safety inspection ,low low lic fees , no income tax , no to low sales tax only way we can afford to retire
Paul - great information as always!! Thank you
Due to your information, I got now have an SD license plate and and driver's license.
That’s actually true, my brother in law was stationed there, aa real head turner lol.
A car guy's dream. To ship your car to a far away land and go do some exploring with your prized possession
The only problem driving from Hawaii to the mainland is it’s hard to find gas stations !…….
Full time RV ers have been using South Dakota for years for domicile address and registration
We lived in Baja and we got South Dakota plates, we also had SD drivers licenses. It was very easy and worth the time to do it.
What is your license really suspended?
Do you have to have a mailbox to get your renewal plates sent out of state?
AM upgraded me and now want me to add $188, so if you have to pay for that to get your renewal every year, not really saving
There's another workaround to this, in NJ at least. In NJ if you don't have personal car insurance, the insurance companies report you to DMV and they suspend your license and registration. If you have the car in the name of a business, that doesn't happen.
Why are you trying to drive without insurance?
and Commercial buisness INsur is sometimes $1000's more them personal
Same in Nevada Insurance reports to the DMV
I want to import one of my older civics into Panamá. They too have a restriction on importing cars older than 10 years. So I'm thinking about just driving it down through Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica into Panamá on the US plates, then see if I can finagle something at the vehicle registration office in Panamá (bribe 😂).

Rooting for you, hope you get to 100k
Fingers crossed!
The big questions are;
Do you need a SD address?
Can I transfer my current (not recently purchased) vehicle thats currently registered in another state (CA) and list my current address (not in SD)?
Thank you - if anyone replies.
I need this answered as well!!!! Kommiefornia Sucks
Maybe.
We live in Cabo and bought our brand new Kia at the dealer. A lot cheaper than USA
I agree with your recommendation and would definitely look at buying in MX, my challenge is moving our large dog as we planned to drive her down along with taking our luggage. Thoughts?
for the drive there, I would just buy the 10 dollar a day MX insurance for the amount of days it will take to get to your final destination.
@@ChristopherWhelihan Drive your dog in your car, go back to US, sell the car, and fly to MX...
I like the idea (drive down, leave wife with our dog, drive back, sell it, fly back) 👍.
@@KutWriteyeah, but they have zero power to enforce it.
You need to have what ever insurance SD requires
Well said. you have to be physically out of California and move to another state before moving abroad.. @@KutWrite
Congratulations! I'm sure you will hit your goal very soon! I really enjoy your teaching style for learning Spanish, the way Mexican people speak it.
Extremely valuable info. Thank you 😊 for sharing
But what about the drivers license. Don't they need to match or does that not matter? Maybe a dumb question, but need to ask it. How long are the tags good for and do you renew online or how does that work?
They don't need to match and yes, you can renew online.
@@qroo Possible to get a Mexican license and keep SD plates/tags? I have AZ license but would plan to get a MX license at some time I believe as we will have no residence in AZ after moving to MX (Tulum/Akumal or Play del Carmen).

I do the same thing in Wisconsin. Now I never have to go to emissions testing. I just registered my car somewhere with no requirements.

Building wealth and remaining financially stable indefinitely is a lot easier with the appropriate information. Participating in financial programs and products is the only true approach to make a high income and remain affluent indefinitely...

Can you tell me what insurance company you are using for this out of state?
One thing to be concerned about though is that even though you might be a resident of your state, if you choose to have SD plates on it, you are more likely to get a ticket since the police figure that you are not a resident and thus would be more likely to just pay the fine instead of trying to fight the ticket...
Isn't that funny, a law or a chance to get fucked with depends on your plate registration? If that doesn't scream slave regulation I don't know what will

It's really not that much different than the hotel taxes that cities enact... Did you say in your comments that SD does not require that you maintain liability insurance on your vehicle?
Most states require a matching DL with Registration. This would mean getting a SD DL.
