A Plane Without A Chance: The Story of The Mooney 301

  • Throughout the 1970s and 80s, aircraft designers around the country began developing a unique aircraft type, pressurized piston-singles. Unlike conventional unpressurized airplanes, these aircraft were able to fly above much of the weather under cabin-class comfort with no oxygen masks. The configuration, although complex and challenging to develop, would allow owner-operators to travel much more conveniently for business and pleasure. The Mooney 301 was Mooney’s entry into the pressurized-single market, and it incorporated a lot of unique and unconventional features. The Mooney 301 seemed to be an incredible advancement in general aviation but may have been doomed by its unique nature and Mooney’s financial setbacks. What do you think about the Mooney? Was it a plane without a chance? Or could the Mooney 301 have been an incredible and unique aircraft to beat its competitors? Let us know in the comment section below!

    Am I mistaken, or didn't Mooney do this 301 project in coordination and/or partnership with Socata? Didn't design aspects of the 301 kind of turn up in the TBM?

      You would be correct! Parts of the engineering process were shared/collaborated upon between the two companies - namely, the wing.

      Yes after Mooney's 97th bankruptcy I think, the design was sold to Socata. The M in TBM is for Mooney.

      You know Pound for Pound the Mooney M-22 Mustang is most likely the Best Buy in todays aviation World. With non pressurized Aircraft like Beech Bonanza 36 models over one million & Cessna not making the P-210, the Mustang is an amazing airplane.
      They are not plagued by the widow Maker Spar of the 210 Cessna line. And the A/D list is next to -0- compared to the Cessna and Piper Malibu.
      For a present day aircraft purchaser it shouldn’t be Rocket since, purchase a Mustang , Dynon / Garmin the avionics and fly a modern pressurized Aircraft for 1/10 the cost of purchasing a new Malibu.
      Even if you had to readjust the Normal category of the present Mustang M-22 to Experimental you would still be none to the wise.

    Great summary. Design engr on the project. It lives on as Socata TBM 700. They bought the design data.

      The 301 was the genesis of the TBM 700. The M in TBM was for Mooney. The high wing loading , Fowler flaps , spoilers, aft loaded airfoil and feeler ailerons all started there. The design ideas live on in the TBM. Awesome prop driven airplane has near jet performance.

    Was always curious what happen and if Mooney actually ran a production of them. The design seemed to have so much potential !

    How many times has Mooney suffered bankruptcy? The creative partnerships they forged with LoPresti, Mitsubishi, and Porsche all wound up to be short-lived adventures that ultimately drowned in red ink in spite of the superior aircraft they produced.

    Based on the limited pictures and videos of the 301. One thing I noticed right away is how far forward the pilot sits. He's literally sitting on the leading edge of the wing. And with the wing swept back a few degrees it gives a VERY open and clear view without the wings blocking the view downward. That feature isn't on any other designs using a conventional engine setup with the engine mounted in front. I do really like that. It just goes to show that they really thought about the W&B issues in order for the pilot to be located so far forward along with the engine being at the nose. Most of the time when you see a pilot sitting forward of the leading edge the engine is usually placed in the back making it a pusher design. In high wing planes the upward view is blocked by the wings above, and in low wing planes the downward view is blocked by the wing below. Why can't we have a low or mid wing that is behind the pilot's butt while keeping the conventional engine setup up front? It's a W&B math problem that most designers don't want to tackle.

    Good content. However, I thought this was a collaboration with Socata? The 301 was the genesis for the TBM...

    • @AviationFix
      @AviationFix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct. They were somewhat synchronous, and wing engineering was shared.

    • @chadgriffith5819

      I was surprised that was left out, I waited till the end hoping for more of the TBM related content. Not being a troll at all....good stuff and enjoy your other stuff. I wish Mooney could keep it together. They just keep failing time and time again. Then again they have all about priced themselves out of the market.

    You say it was "scrapped." Yet why not say in fact it was not fundamentally scrapped as it became the TBM 700 to 960. And I think it lived up to everything that was hoped. I don't know of a faster turboprop single engine and perhaps not even dual engine?

  • @rp4186
    @rp4186 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also pondered this aircraft in the past. Seems to me that the company had its own departmental separation issues because how it’s possible to have such progressive R&D paired with conservative financial control I just do not know. Clearly the CFO was not prepared to bet his house on a production run. Big shame coz it still looks contemporary.

    No one in their right mind would waste money on any newer Mooney with the Pipistrel Panthera outclassing it in every category and at the same price point. It’s just pitiful Mooney couldn’t get it together and build anything that’s even better than a Piper Comanche.

      I worked then at Mooney. The company was run into the ground by the man's ego. He reminded most of us at the the Kerrvile facility of a man named Adolf. He had aerodynacists do research on modifications to the LG doors for instance, and when the place shut down he started an after market business selling what the company had done and paid for the research.
