This song gets me every freaking time... The lyrics for one. But also the fact that they wrote this at the age of just roughly 22. The lyrics would invoke the thought of someone old and spent writing it. It's truly a poetic, and musical masterpiece.
I KNOW. I can't believe it either. They were all about 20 when Kill Em All came out, 21-22 when Ride The Lightning came out. I can't believe they were that young and writing masterpieces like The Call of Ktulu.
When James hits those first notes of the chorus at exactly 1:05, you get to see Metallica at the absolute top of their prime. That small moment of James playing the chorus by himself before everyone else jumps in, and James looking out at the crowd, is when Metallica reached the highest point ever in their entire history. That has to have been the most magical moment of James whole career.
I was There. About 60 meters left from the stage in the second row. So, all my ribs were pressed firmly. The best performance I've ever seen. Thanks to Metallica and AC/DC.
This song at this particular concert just evokes so much emotion not just because of the massive amount of people that were there but for what this concert meant to the people at the time of the end of the Cold War it lets them let out their sadness and frustrations and everything and it's amazing how music can do that
Yes indeed, and basically 10 years after they taste the freedom, the russians go back to the evil hands of KGB and anti west propaganda, i can see USA flags in the crowd, imagine that right now.... so sad... Putin Huilo!
+TheOromus Those rappers will never be in the same league as Metallica or actual real musicians. Rap is only popular in North America, outside these borders not so much. Rap is also terrible live and cannot create the type of excitement & energy for 100,000+ people.

yeap!!!! it s 5 in the morning in France, 4 hours yet of Metallica's music and I don't feel sleepy, even though I work in 3 hours....I'm screwed but happy!!!
Something I just realized: this is the first live show I've seen where they've finished the entire song. This was the fall of the Iron Curtain at the late 80's, Russia was just becoming post-Stalin. I watched an interview with Hetfield recently in which he said at some point during the show the military, who were supposed to keeping everyone calm, throw down their guns and hats and joined the crowd. That's nuts! This really was absolutely historical.
i remember this concert very well. Looking back, the importance of this show should not be underestimated. Look at those fans-- just insane, probably the best day of their life at that point in time.
This is what heaven on earth looks like. This has got to be in one of the top spots for best concert of all time. I'm seeing Metallica for the first time live in less than a month after being a diehard fan for years. I can promise you, I WILL cry during this song. METALLICA!!!!
I was lucky to have grown with Metalica from my mid teens till my 40s. I feel bad kids now never knew how huge they were in their prime. These guys are the definition of metal rock, and for me will always be the greatest band I've ever seen.
+SP3C7REGaming It was released as an album, not a studio album of course. But I do have it. I love all of their improvising at the end, random jokes and playing. Hell, I love the impromptu Dazed and Confused halfway through.
They must have been a bit nervous yeah, but they surely knew what they were doing. They knew that they were going to make millions of people (world wide, not just the ones in this concert) happy, and bloody relieved to be out of the bad government they've been in since they were born. FREEEEDOMMM (I know the US has it's ups and downs)
iplyrunescape305 Who the fuck cares if the US has had "ups and downs"? Be fucking proud. You don't have to feel ashamed to say "fuck you, USA USA USA, God Bless America, Freedom." Fuck the haters, the leftist degenerates.
To me, the guitar solo for Fade To Black is a work of art, a truly wonderful solo, but i've always wondered why they always improvise it when it's time to play it, kind of gets me off guard every time i watch the song live and just here wah wah or just some improv guitar playing that leads to the last bit of the solo that feels shoe-horned so we wont forget what song we're listening to.
Imagine how many times they have played this song since it is in their repertoire. And keep in mind it's a fan favorite and a favorite of theirs as well. They have probably played several thousand sets since "Ride the Lightning" ( Black Album alone was around 300ish dates ). It probably gets boring to play it exactly the same each time. And also probably replicating the solo the same or being on the same point every time you play or in the same groove or at the same skill level as when it happened in the studio is something that is quite hard. Kirk always has a tendency to go a bit of tang with his solos tho. They are at their most album similar within the same year of the release by what I've seen in live sets from them.
Totally agree. He needs to take that Wah Wah Pedal and throw it into the front row so they can trample it! That solo is a classic. You shouldn't fuck with a classic...even if you wrote it.
My favorite song of all time. By far, by far. And I listen to a lot of stuff that's not rock/metal. I want this played at my funeral, especially 4:20 onwards.
I have loved this video for like the past 10 years, which reminds me of my youth from the past 30 years. I keep saving it to my favorites but with each Windows update, I lose it. I've saved it to my hard drive now. Hopefully I can keep it forever.
It makes skins crawl! none of any other heavy metal band could conquer the stage like this 4 awesome guys doing it ! keep rockin till you die Metallica! age is just numbers, the metal spirit live within!
my brother who is 10 years older than me used to love Metallica so much and he was the one that made me listen to their music.... i used to be a kid back then and listened to them just cuz i liked the melody and stuff i didn't even know english ... but now i can definitely feel the emotion 👑👑👑
I think it's their best guitar tone by far of all live shows.. Although I like the sound they have now, it's just not as much gain as they used to use like Seattle and here. I kinda miss that aspect
Infinity well... You kinda wrong, I have a mark 2c+ and his input level was 9.5 on volume 1, that's as much of a gain control as the master. His graphic eq changed from a V to an M with the lower and upper mids raised, which adds some crunch and fatness to the tone. But your right in the fact that the numbers were low, it's just on a mark iic+ 5.25 on the drive is a good amount of gain. Not to mention he had a mark iic++ which added 6 more DB of gain so if his was 5.25 maybe your settings at home would be 6 or so
Infinity I've played with both tones his old scooped tones, with my parametric Eqs, and honestly I got bored with it in 4 months or so. It's amazing when you first get it and crank that shit up, but yeah I started added more mids into it, and less gain, and it sounds like his tone today, obviously not exact cause I don't have a fuckin diezel vh4 :(... He gets his mids from the diezel and gain and treb from the triaxis c+ circuit. I think his tone today sounds A LOT better. But I still like to go back to the justice/ mop scooped shit from time to time.

Realise that these people had been living under the impact of Communism for the last 60 years. While they were allowed individuality all examples of art, literature, music, any creative expression was banned or heavily heavily monitored. This concert would have been the first examples of modern music the some 1.6 million people would have ever heard. It’s a weird coincidence that fade to black is a song about letting go and being free, which is what this concert enabled Russia to do. There is no greater accomplishment of a musician than that of opening someone’s eyes to the beauty behind artistic expression and individuality. No life experience could ever be as good as playing up on that stage.

The video is NOT saving to my hard drive. The sound and video is awesome! So much history. I hope this video continues to play on..... Cannot save it to my hard drive. Perhaps too many "haters" out there blocking the video.
Life, it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone
No one but me can save myself, but it's too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye
i dont know why, i just cry. 2016
Childhood's end
All of the 397 people that disliked this either...1. Weren't at this concert2. Upset and wonder why musicians age3. Or are fucking idiots that go to videos and hit the dislike button to be nuisances.

The power of music man. Another great bands was there, like Pantera, ACDC and Black Crowes. And yes, about 800000 people was there!
1600000 exactly🤷🏻♂️
Hold on a tick or 2? Could You actually stand up in front of that many people, Keep your nerve's and your composure, without Shitting yourself, and Perform at your peak, and act like it's just another show??? I dont fuckin think sooo man.. This is where you separate the Men from the Boy's! This is Rock History in the Raw!
+Keven Carson Internet is where you separate literate from the illiterate.

That's what you call murdering a fantastic solo
you brain ded?
Nossa cara, eu ainda não era nascido nessa época, mas eu sinto a emoção em cada frase e riff dessa musica. Época de ouro que muita gente viveu e alguns até participaram pelo que deu pra perceber haha

I wish I could of been at that concert but sadly i was 2 when it happened. Oh well, I can still enjoy how epic by watching the video on youtube.
apparently lars has a hard time when it comes to recording but live...man... at the end his double pedal is perfectly timed, no flaw whatsoever
He seems to do better under pressure
