  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land is one of the best games in the Kirby series, but all games must come to an end, and it turns out Forgotten Land has four endings to discover. HAL Laboratory has made a Kirby title with multiple endings to reach as many players as possible, and in this video I will show you what each of these endings are, and how they come together to make one of the best experiences on the Nintendo Switch.

@@star-aether Well, that order is important with its implications. One implies that the Butterfly/Morpho Knight will absorb powerful creatures and fight Kirby (aka the correct one), the other one implies that Fecto Forgo is much more powerful than the butterfly, who seemingly absorbed Galacta Knight, who was previously the strongest warrior in the series. There is a clear difference between what happens, and the second one would be weird, since a previously established character gets destroyed by a new character just one game after. Just explaining since you make it sound like it doesn't matter, which it does in the full context.

Loved the video, but I do have one general note.
I personally disagree with the golden void. While I definitely understand where you are coming from, I think it really is supposed to be a congratulations. I mean, letting Leon- sorry, "The Lion Man" have a sixth of his soul missing seems like it will leave him in a negative state. And sure, each waddle dee may look nearly identical, they do have slightly different color shades, and when thinking about it, the human heart believes in no man left behind. That's why King Dedede's sacrifice near the end of the main game was so touching to watch. Each "little thing" is more than a little thing, it's an adventure. And while there may be nothing to truly congratulate you and nothing left to truly do, it feels fufilling that you did everything you can to make everyone happy. The Waddle Dees are all back, Leon is back to his old self, and our good friend Elfilin is back to full force once again. Even in the gotchas, they are gifted like friendship bracelets from the locals of the town. It's not like you just get a statue for free, you have to earn it.
Or maybe I'm just trying to cope that me achieving this ending makes me a terrible person. Take you pick.

    • @NotSpecialDude
      @NotSpecialDude ปีที่แล้ว +101

I think both interpretations work actually. I 100%'d the game too, but the reason I found it satisfactory was because of all the rewards I was given along the way. Namely, the figurine you get for every milestone. You get one for saving all the Waddle Dees, L̶e̶o̶n̶ "The Lion Man's" Soul gets you one. The weapon smith, the cafe, the game place, the mail man, and even the item shop. And these figurines give tidbits of lore that are so either cute, awesome, or creepy. Like the fact that the ape boss attacked the Waddle dee town at least 30 times while you were away, but meta knight beat him off every time. Or the fact that Kirby personally feels that working at the cafe and NOT eating the food he was serving was one of the hardest things he had to do, and that is humorous given the feats he has done both in this game and in this franchise.
The actual Journey to a 100% is more than worth the effort. But the actual reward for a 100% is just a picture and a music change for the figurine selection page, even though by that point you've already likely read all the figurines. So the meaning of the 4th ending changes based on WHY you got it. If you were like Kirby and was enjoying the adventure every step of the way, taking your time and allowing each piece of the game to speak for itself, then while the final reward is lame, it ultimately means nothing and you leave completely satisfied. But if you came at it with the approach of the Fecto Forgo, and consumed everything only for that final milestone, then the meaningless of 100% will hit you like a truck. Pun intended.

Even after 100%, it's still worth it to kick back and play through levels again for multiple reasons, be it taking in sights, trying to collect evidence to learn what really happened to the people here, translating this new language, or finding neat little details you hadn't noticed before.

I agree honestly. The moment he said that the "humans" (I personally believe this was the original home of Haltmann's species, but that's beside the point) destroyed the environment and made the world uninhabitable, despite the fact literally NOTHING in the game remotely implied that, that's when I knew he was reaching. Seriously, those were some Game Theory levels of leaps in logic.

4:50 The invasion is not 30 years old. 30 is the number of years that passed after the accidental creation of Elfilin. The invasion made by Fecto Elfilis (Because that is the actual entity that invaded and not Fecto Forgo), is ancient as hell. The recording was made only 30 years after it happened. Said in christian: Fecto Forgo, the first half of Fecto Elfilis, has been in stasis for hundreds of years, if not thousands. (That's why "Eternal Echo of the Thrilling Tour our our" is constantly repeating "AND HERE WE ARE" because Fecto Forgo became traumatized by hearing that audio for millennia).
9:15 The butterfly didn't come by chance. Morpho Knight is the canonical angel of death of Kirby games, he detects the incoming fall of great warriors, and then he absorbs them to face whoever was about to defeat them. Morpho was able to feel that Fecto Forgo's Soul was about to be defeated by Kirby, and so, he proceeded to absorb Fecto Forgo to fight against Kirby, it was not Forgo the one absorbing the butterfly. "The resulting creature..." Morpho Knight was not born from that moment, he had already existed for a very long time, just not canonically until this game, as I said, he is an afterlife entity, akin to what we know as Valkyries when it comes to functionality.
12:23 Usually, every single "Extra hard secret boss" is not canon. Marx's Soul is not canon, just like Soul of Sectonia, ETC. However, Chaos Elfilis is the first extra-hard-secret boss of the Kirby franchise to be absolutely canon. After his soul was devoured by Morpho Knight, he became a prisoner inside the butterfly, but after Kirby defeated Morpho, Fecto was able to break free, and that's the moment when he absorbed part of the powers of Morpho Knight, ascending to Chaos Elfilis (He even does some of Morpho's attacks now). Also, the sportscaster of the arena clearly states that "The final Cup-z is placed in another dimension", giving context and canonicity to it.
13:34 Ending 1, ending 2, and ending 3, are all canon and are progressed in order. You kill Fecto Elfilis, re-dividing Fecto and Elfilin. Fecto's soul survives and traps Leongar in Forgo Dreams. You enter Forgo Dreams and rescue Leongar, then you try to vanish away from Fecto's Soul, but Morpho Knights eats Fecto before you can react. You dematerialize Morpho, and Fecto breaks free, absorbing Morpho's energy to be reborn as Chaos Elfilis, he no longer needs Elfilin to reach his ultimate form. After you kill Chaos Elfilis, the last fragment of Fecto's Soul is absorbed by Elfilin, thus, Fecto and Elfilin are finally one, again, but this time, the conqueror is no more, all that remains is Elfilin. For me, this is the game's actual ending when it comes to lore and canonicity, and personally, it made me feel that the game has only one major ending. However, your point of view is also absolutely valid too, when it comes to videogame design, there are indeed 3 endings, rewarding different kinds of players according to how old they are. Great video, I really liked it.

I think the best thing about the Kirby series regarding its multiple endings is that the team behind the series has been developing the multiple endings technique for at least 14 years now.
Ever since Shinya Kumazaki became the director at HAL laboratory, almost all of the Kirby games have had the 4 endings mentioned in this video. It was only recently with Star Allies however, that I think the 4 endings strategy reached the level it is today thanks to the less-well-known Heroes in Another Dimension update. Some notes, because kirby's world building has a lot of prior context this video seems to be unaware of. The "human civilization" of the forgotten land is not confirmed or even implied to be real humanity, but rather likely "the ancients" a hyper advanced civilization in the kirby multiverse responsible for the creation of countless powerful artifacts and aspects of its world. "Entered a land of dreams" seems to imply that the ancients used forgos warp power to travel to kirbys universe at minimum, and likely dreamland itself, considering all of the advanced magical and non magical technology that exists there with no explanation. It could also imply the ancients, or at least the scientific half, originated there before moving to Halcandra. Secondly, the butterfly is, get this, an avatar of death itself that first appeared in the previous kirby game, star allies, that seeks out powerful tormented souls to assist in guiding them to the afterlife. It appears as a butterfly, but Morpho Knight is the form it's taken to fight us after absorbing Galacta Knight in the previous game, who was stated in the original Japanese text to be "a soul tired of living". Forgo managed to resist being completely assimilated or guided on by Morpho, though, and stole some of its power for themselves, which is how it managed to grow into chaos elfilis. The red butterfly has been present since return to dreamland, and butterflies as a visual have been with kirby since the beginning, implying it has been with us for a long time. I would recommend you read into kirby's deeper text, it is cool as shit. The RPG Monger has 2 videos that fairly thoroughly cover almost everything in a little bit over an hour total i believe.

Folks be like "ey, the cute Kirby games where he eats the little evil guys, so funny and cute haha", but then they go like "what in the absolute fuck is that monstrosity of a final boss", and then they read the lore and they're like "this is too much lore for a game about a pink marshmallow with a black hole for a stomach, goddammit, even the way I described Kirby is horrifyingly cute."

I feel like you can still go further even after the 4th ending, to a 5th ending of sorts. After you’ve done supposedly 100 percent completion you can do unnecessary maxing for gotchas and abilities, but there’s also being able to set more challenges, like for the coliseum, perhaps no death or no abilities. And apparently, there’s a few different things when you go on a new file after completing the 3rd ending, but there’s also being able to start again but perhaps with restrictions, or a challenge. It can still keep going for quite a while until… You’ve done everything. Done every file, maxed every mini game, done every challenge, found every secret and Easter egg, and sped-run to the best of your abilities. Then you’ve truly reached, the end, the true end of the content. Reaching this 5th ending can feel like having to depart with the game but it also feels like you had all the fun you ever could with it.

I played through until I got to that sweet Golden Void of 100% complete. I loved the little Gacha figurines and how kirby would happily stare at them in his house and all the little details the game designers went into their descriptions. We don't have Lore messages on the pause screen in this game. Oh no! it's in the statues themselves. These little figurines tell you so much about this world and little quirks and details that if you want the whole story, you have to find as many of the special ones that you can. For me, completing the game finally happened after I finally beat the final level of the serving minigame and got that final little figurine of a Waddle Dee who was brought back to town by my own efforts. I wanted to save the Dees because they were innocent. I collected the figurines because I love collecting in games, with a further drive and my desire to learn about the world/s and lore of that game and series. In the end, Forgotten Land will be remembered not only as Kirby's triumphant step into the third dimension in gameplay for the first time, but a feast for your gaming palette regardless of skill from start to finish. From a guy who felt he hasn't fully completed a game in a decade, I can proudly say this is a game WORTH completing, especially if you love Kirby.

Your idea if consumption being a theme of the game was pretty interesting. I always interpreted the forgotten people being capitalists to a fault, but I didn't interpret the destruction of the forbidden continent as their doing.
The wastes where life began features cargo ships still loaded with containers, and one of the redgar levels has a wonderia park roller-coaster. I saw this as the original land of the forgotten people, and the arrival continent as being where they evacuated to when the invasion first started. Elfilis very well could have drained that area of the ocean to prevent escape or blew in a sandstorm from another planet, etc
The forgotten people, after elfilis was captured, rebuilt wonderia, built 2 malls to replace the one in the now desert, and rebuilt cities for people to live in. The arrival continent looks abandoned, but the forbidden land looks actively destroyed, yknow?
Idk just my 2 cents this game shook me to my core when I first played it lol

While I do think it’s interesting that you can point to themes of consumption, right down to Kirby’s signature ability, but even if the 100% ending was trying to portray that theme, it doesn’t particularly do a good job of it. You compare it to the 100% completion of Zelda breath of the Wild, but it’s significantly more encouraged for you to 100% Kirby than it is to collect every last korok seed, a monotonous task that nets you a piece of poo. I had fun completing Kirby, even with the ball rolling minigame, I shudder at the very thought of truly completing breath of the Wild.

Good vid, although if you ask me, I was perfectly satisfied with the 100% ending, as it was quite easy to reach and that you still get "tangible" rewards in the form of pictures in your house. Yes, it's not as flashy as the other three, but so wasn't the 4th ending of Odyssey (or even its 3rd!) And the game is already fun to complete, so having a JPEG is just the cherry on top - the destination and the journey, in a way.
Just a precision: you don't actually need to check all optional checkboxes to reach 100%: there are at least two things you don't need:
    - reaching the target time in Treasure Roads (yes, it actually doesn't count and the reward is extremely meagre, only a few dozen coins)
    - enhance all your abilities to +star, including the non-final versions (and oh boy, given the absolutely obscene amount of rare stones you need for this, thank GOODNESS it doesn't count!)
    - you could also argue that a third thing is completing all Cups with no buffs or amiibo (as both are displayed on the results screen) but that's a stretch...
    Thanks for the vid!

I was hoping for some secret ending if you collected everything. Turns out I was missing one figure after I did everything else, lol. But my mentality is, 100%, or not move on at all. Those stupid figures tho... I grinded and never got them, and my sister got all the figures I could get at that point in 5 minutes. Now I need to power up every single ability and get goal time in every treasure road... I'm fine don't worry.
But I remember when I got 100% completion. I felt underwhelmed, and resentful that there was no kirby masters movie to put my heart at rest. It was complete, and it didn't feel super amazing. So now, kirby sits, staring out the window, admiring the forgotten world.

I think another way to interpret the golden void ending in a more positive light would be the fact that it's about not leaving anyone behind. Kirby as a franchise is essentially about friendship and optimism, and I don't think the game and its developers would be so mean-spirited to reward players' investment into the game with shaming them about 100% it. The Golden Void ending could be meant to contrast how the original people of the forgotten land abandoned the animal life; it is the feeling of bitterness at this action that left the Beast Pack and Leongar vulnerable to Fecto Forgo, or at the very least this is how Fecto Forgo convinced the pack to work for them. Just as it isn't necessary to 100% the game, it hadn't been necessary for the original people of forgotten land to bring with them the animals. I think then, the golden void ending is about performing the act of mercy and friendship the original forgotten land inhabitants hadn't and, you know, breaking the cycle of forsaking the beast pack to an entire world of ruin and isolation

The both games were truly not designed to be played past a certain point, rather the variety and amount of extra content is in there to appeal to the largest number of players possible. Due to Forgo's ability to create star shaped portals (much like the Lor Starcutter and the Master Crown), it's highly likely that the inhabitants were the technological Ancients mentioned by Magolor in Return to Dreamland and Hyness in Star Allies.
Is this relevant at all? No. Am I a massive Kirby nerd who knows way more about the lore of this franchise than I really should? Yes.

This was a very well done video, but the whole "consumption meta-narrative" theory seems a little far-fetched to me. To me, there's not really any concrete evidence that explains that the theme of the game centers around over-consumption. Besides, 100 percenting the game is it's own reward, I wouldn't call it a punishment from the developers for playing the game too much.

something that you forgot to mention is that in an ealier game, i think that in a gamemode where you play as meta knight, at some point you face galacta knight, but this one is also absorbed by the butterfly, given new appearance and powers, galacta (or morpho knight) has the power to go trough dimensions, which lead him into the forgo dreams dimension, and galacta consumed fecto forgo lol.

"A reminder to enjoy what we have and make it last, because once we do everything in that game and hit that 100% completion, there is nothing left in this world"....
Well until you've stopped playing for a while and come back to it where it feels fresh again in the new save file haha

I never thought of the game being multiple endings. I just saw 1 ending and 1 game to 100%. So this is a nice idea that I'll have to think about more in the games I play.
Also I never saw the setting of this game like how you do. I just played the game with no thought about where I am or what im doing other than I must defeat the evil.

This game was the most fun I’ve ever had playing a 3D platformer, and maybe the most fun I’ve had playing a game in a while. Just enough difficulty to be challenging without discouraging, and fun battle mechanics (dodge roll go brrrrrrr). I loved getting all the Waddle Dees and even standing at the Gotcha Machines for half an hour to finish the collection. Morpho Knight Sword is an amazing OP copy ability and I love it. The music is awesome and the post game is long and hard enough to be satisfying without overstaying its welcome. This might be my favorite video game in a long time.

One thing to explain: this is the second time you see Morpho Knight. First: Star allies boss rush, where it was actually Galacta Knight getting absorbed, just like elfilis

Honestly, from what I've heard, this game's side challenges feel pretty good to complete, and it's a pretty pleasant experience. I feel like the Golden Void ending isn't just about doing everything there's left to do and feel underwhelmed about it.
I feel like it's more about... finishing that collection of neat things you started, spend some time relaxing and fishing, go out to the movies, donate to talented musicians, play a few tabletop games, and help some friends with a side gig. It feels more like doing relaxing things for fun, y'know? Where the journey is the reward by itself, but it's not an arduous journey either. Instead, it's a pleasant one, where you can relax, eat some food with friends, and... feel the Spring Breeze. Y'know what I'm sayin'?

My first Kirby game and had an absolute blast with it. I got 100% but saw that as a personal goal rather than an ending of the game. For me the colosseum ending was the true one, afterwards was just Kirby doing some fun tasks like collecting the last couple figures, checking out the movie theater, and going for a nice long sleep. I thought it was the perfect way to end for me. (For the record though I did all the extra stuff as I went, collected all the Waddle Dees or Leon soul fragments in each stage before moving onto the next, got all the rare stones and upgrades as I went, did the mini games as they became available etc.)

I feel if your interest is in 100% completion, you really need to tackle all those optional things as you go along, all I had left to do after Chaos Elfilis was the last shift at the resteraunt, the last upgrade for the Band, a good number of figures and a small smattering of waddle dees and challenge portals, I wrapped it up in a day practically. So for me it wasn't disappointing, cause it didn't feel like much effort. and by the way, you don't have to get Target time on the challenge portals to get 100%.
