    I can't wait for Gen 3. I'm prepared to spend up to $50,000 to get my first EV. I'm committed that my current car is my last gasoline vehicle. This is the future and there are millions who think like me.

    I don't think you're a fanboy. A fanboy would idealize things and pretend the car is perfect (or nearly perfect). You pointed out every little drawback in the car and still managed to show you like the car very much. You made passionate but fairly balance analysis of the car.
    I hope you keep the car with the new battery for at least 200k Km and give us a review of battery life after that.

      +Marcelo Pacheco Very good observation, Marcelo. I think Björn's assessment of the car was brutally honest, and loving. He's probably one of the worst reviewers I've ever seen, but that in itself adds to the charm here :-)

      +Bjørn Nyland I'll get 85D (90D with range upgrade). I think it will be great as a daily driver, and I don't need the power of P85D. I live in Chicago; I don't see a lot of Teslas here yet.

    Although this review appeared extemporaneous, what did the trick for Bjorn was the experience. He really has being into his Model S. The review is honest and very objective. Initially, I was wondering if I could watch it all, but I ended up enjoying the whole 57+min video. I can foresee ICE cars being limited to the history books and few niche usages between 50 and 70 years from now. The future is already here. Long live Musk! Long live Tesla! Long live EV!

      @billcichoke2534 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fossils are in the ground and dead. Sorry, but without HUGE government subsidy and ICE taxation, so are electric cars.
      ICE cars stand on their own merits and, therefore, aren't going ANYWHERE. Except maybe down the road while you're still on your 2nd supercharger visit...

      Looks like :-) You really did not observe degradation?
      Also I was surprised by your range indications. But this may be related to speed limits. In an other video i saw some 90 km/h limits on highways. What is the normal limit on your highways? In CH i can bearly get to a 380km range but we are mostly driving at 120km/h on highways. Which makes a BIG difference in range...

    I highly recommend a trip to Spain. My wife and I just got back from a vacation where we went biking around the countryside in southern Spain. It was nice and warm and we got to experience a second autumn as the trees changed colors. We did rent a VW golf diesel for a few days and it was nice car for traveling on the one lane mountain roads(watch out for oncomming traffic), but the throttle response was very irregular and slow. After driving through areas with 90% round-a-bouts now that I am back in the states with 90% stop lights I find them very maddening.

    Hi Bjorn, nice wrap up! Thanks for showing to the masses how usable the Model S is as an actual electric car. I wanted to point out that, regarding winter range reduction, it has more to do with increased air resistance than with energy required to heat up the battery. The colder the air, the higher its density, so it takes more energy to drive through it. Actually the battery heats itself since it is not 100 percent efficient, however in the Model S it has a big exposed area which is potentially cooled down by the airflow under the car (as opposed to my Roadster, which is more isolated)

    Hi Bjorn, we have test driven the Model S on two occasions ,im pleased to say I am going ahead & ordering Today. We live near a Supercharger just west of London which means the Tesla is a no brainer for us. Driving a lovely car & not paying for fuel is going to be so refreshing. We will also be doing European trips utilising the Supercharger Network so can get to the South of France & back without paying for fuel. The future's bright, The future's Tesla

  • @databeestje
    @databeestje 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think you meant Relay/Solenoid regarding the "switch/contactor" you referred to. These are basically mechanical switches operated by magnetic coil. The problem here being that they have a "service life" of a couple of thousand cycles. But those can vary greatly depending on the amount of current that is being switched.
    It is a common failure, mostly because of the sparking destroying the contacts, not neccesarily because it was too light.
    Petrol or Diesel cars are a pain to maintain. 20k km for changing oil, 120k km for changing the timing belt. 200k km for changing the clutch. 300k km for changing the gearbox. And there there is the sheer amount of oil, fuel and air filters. Cooling fluids, alternators, starter motors...
    And they they needed to meet emission norms, and we got catalytic converters, EGR valves, turbo's, compressors, start stop. It didn't get any better.
    My gearbox (Peugeot 206 HDI) is like rowing a crowbar through a bucket of screws, it's horrible.

    • @mibars
      @mibars 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recall that in Tesla this contactor is almost always engaged unless car goes into emergency mode for any reason (failiure, crash, deep discarge, etc.). It must be engaged to provide power to DC-DC converter that is always on. So no sparking occuring during normal use. Ah, and contactor is just a big relay and there are two separate ones made by Tyco in battery pack.

    • @databeestje
      @databeestje 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mibars Ah, thanks for explaining that.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was told that some of the earlier models had a weakness in the contactor. Tesla should probably (and hopefully) have improved this.

    A great review. Cleared the reservations of many people. One thing I wanna add is that tesla should have also plugs to plug in at the front of the cars. It's annoying always to reverse and charge the cars. It shall not be too hard to do so. Liked the review as it was not like a pro tesla one and was a impartial review. World needs electric cars. It saves alot as no mobil oil, and dozens of other wear and tears. And it's true after this car no one would need to go back to fossil cars... Range, charging time, these 2 are the issues to be solved. If these are solved long journey would not be a problem at all. Great car.

    My Chevy Impala LTZ has all those amenities (Huge trunk, Bose radio, fold down heated, leather seats, sun roof, 305 HP V6, etc.) at about 1/5 th. the price (admittedly purchased used, 1 year old at $17,800.00). That will buy a bunch of petrol. I'm retired and am a low mileage driver also. So it depends on your life status for the period in which you purchase the car. The Impala just may last the rest of my "driving" life, hopefully the price of petrol will stay low 'til I move on.
    Personally I like the fact that we have viable electric car development in progress. I'd love to have a small second car as an electric for neighborhood runs. Unfortunately the prices on those are "Too Proud" and of course the GREEDY insurance cos would want their cruel rake to cover it.

    It's interesting, I'm watching your video right now and I got to the part where you are talking about the your navigation system and I found it interesting because I am always wishing I had Tesla's navigation. I'm always fighting with my navigation system and constantly comparing it to yours. Pretty funny. I guess this is a situation of, the grass is always greener on the other side. lol I still wish I had your navigation. :)

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Tesla nav has a lot of advantages. For example, I like the map in the big screen so I get an overview all the time. And it's easy to search for names there. But the TomTom offers other features not implemented in the Tesla nav yet. Such as speed camera warning, speed limit, navigate to any point on the map, navigate via a waypoint, etc.

    • @ElectrifiedJourneys
      @ElectrifiedJourneys 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bjørn Nyland Yeah, that TomTom looks pretty cool but that tiny display would drive me crazy. I can't tell you how nice it would be to have the speed limit feature on my navi over here. I've been on highways for more than 40 miles before I've seen a speed posted. I remember seeing in a review about how the i3 had that feature on its navi but when I test drove the car over here in Japan the navi didn't have it.

    Once again, great and interesting video. Would love to hear your rant on hydrogen sometime!
    I really don't see how it will work when electricity is already here, readily available, much more efficient. Also hydrogen is currently mainly sourced from OIL and hydrolysis is so inefficient!
    However if they work out something totally clean, cheap and everything may it win. BUT I doubt it.
    Hydrogen is our future! YEAH RIGHT! (Yeah right is an advertisement for a beer company in New Zealand, they put any stupid statement followed by Yeah Right, and everyone now just uses it.)

    Sounds quite plausible with regards to the rain vs temperature. Sailplanes virtually drop out of the sky when they go through rain compared to normal flight. So it hampers your aerodynamic performance a lot. Which especially will affect your range in a aero slippery car like the Tesla S.

    Still ... I have an LPG Opel Meriva which is quite a reasonable car considering the costs and yet my costs are about 3000€ per year for fueling and servicing. It makes my head spin. My previous car was Ford Focus 2.0 which was around 5k € per year in fuel costs and maintenance. Crazy!!
    If they put up a Supercharger anywhere along my daily commute I'll be hard pressed to ignore all the potential savings.

    • @brianhall6641
      @brianhall6641 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your 40K will become 60 or 100K! Universally, Tesla drivers drive more for the enjoyment. In most countries, quick savings is not possible (car taxes are not as high, so tax-free doesn't mean as much) ; the car might break even over 8 yrs or so. So people are paying a great deal for the 'Tesla Experience'.

    • @Bradyjr2
      @Bradyjr2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      How long is your commute? It'd have to be 160+ miles round trip for you to need Superchargers along it. Most of your charging can be done at work or at home anyway, so for the most part, you don't need superchargers.

    Great video as always Bjørn! Some things you did not mention in this video that you maybe can comment on is the build quality. Is the stitching on the seats even and straight? Does the panels inside and outside the car have good overlap or joint without huge or uneven gaps between them? There are a lot of plastic parts inside and outside of the car, does they feel like good quality? Since you have had a German built car before (BWM) you probably know what I am thinking about here. I have heard some reporters said that they think some of the plastic parts feels "cheap". Have you ever had any "squawky" noises when the car is cold (from plastic panels rubbing together)? Or maybe you always come in to a preheated car and therefore never experienced it?
    Another question: are there lots of extra accessories you can buy for the car that are not made by Tesla, but from other manufactures and are made for the Model S car? Things like a big box to put in the centre console, extra lights in the rear. What about exterior trims from other than Tesla?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The build quality is not on the same level as the BMW. Panels, edges and gaps are not 100 % aligned. It's common on Model S unfortunately. For me it's not a big deal as long as it doesn't leak water. I had some issues with rattling noise from the interior. Some of it was fixed but there's still some noise I need them to fix.
      I don't have any accessories except for the sun shade.

  • @davidbryant2872
    @davidbryant2872 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Comment about your remarks that it is a big car. no doubt it is, but for comparison: in length it is between the length of a Mercedes E class (about 6 inches longer) but shorter than an S class (nearly 10 inches longer than the Tesla model S). I think its width is the most unusual and challenging exterior dimension. The Model S is wider than most other cars. It is 6 inches wider than an MB E class and even about 2 inches wider than an S class. It is wider than a BMW 7 series. But it is a bit narrower than a Bentley and about the same as an Audi A8. The A8 is about 11 inches longer than an S, so the A8 really is a very large car.
    The Model S has been criticized by quite a few people for its limited headroom, especially in the rear, but I think that is a function of the aerodynamic shape. It might be less efficient to operate if the cabin were taller and had more headroom. these are architectural trade-offs with battery size and range. (The widere and longer the car, the larger the battery can be and so on.)

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The headroom would be a lot better if there was an estate/station wagon Tesla. I know it's not a typical American car. But at least in Norway they are very popular because they can carry a lot of luggage. It also gives more flexibility in regards of panorama roof (just like on the BMW E61).

    Hi Bjorn, great video with tons of information on how the tesla is performing over a Year and milage period. I work in a sales environment and when people comment on a purchase experience its the real thing. I will in the future, when the money is there )), buy a tesla, maybe the model 3 suits me more, Tesla is a engeneers compagny and their products are miles ahead and will be so in the future.
    Just a question, Daimler sold their 9% stake in tesla and switched on toyota,, together they will build electric cars it seems. I think tesla could rent out the superchargers to other manifactures. cheers michel/belgium

    Love your reviews!! Most detailed reviews out there by far. I am in the process of building my car and I am stuck on deciding between a 2 options. Air suspension vs coil springs and Pano roof or not. I wonder if you think the coil ride is bouncy or firmer as other reviewers say. One reviewer said the car was even quieter with air sus. Your thoughts? Also.. You say you would order the pano roof again but in another video review you say that you leave the back foam insulation piece covering rear portion of the pano year round. That doesn't seem very practical or pretty to look at. I live in south Florida (the sunshine state) where it is HOT and super sunny. You input would be most valuable. Thank you!!! Andrew

    • @bjornnyland

      I have never tried coil spring on a Tesla and can therefore not make any recommendations. Regarding panorama, there's a second video where I use the panorama sunshade to improve the looks a lot. It's a matter of taste. Panorama could be useful if you like to open it up on sunny days.

      Adam Dorety When traveling in Norway, the charging breaks is needed for toilet, food, etc anyways. But as soon as we move in Sweden, Denmark, France, etc where the speed limits are 120 or higher, then it would make more sense to have a 120 kWh battery.

  • @Mehmet-uy8cr
    @Mehmet-uy8cr 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The concept of electric cars is great. Only thing to work is on making these batteries last longer and charge faster. People might say it is too expensive but you always need some people to jump to new stuff which eventually be the standard.
    maybe in 30 years we only driver electrics.
    Do realise that with electric cars you dont have any exhaust, moving engine parts. etc. This will be a huge hit to the car market.

    Hi, thanks for another intuitive video ;-)
    The car being quite large, how is it to handle it in daily lifetime, i.e. over speed bumps, backing in to parking lots / parking houses, turning radious. Dose your wife drive it., what does she think about it?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always use normal suspension height and I never have any problems over speed bumps. The car is quite large and wide so I have to avoid too tight parking spots. I always try to park a little away from the other cars either way. Because people usually don't care if they smash their crappy car's door on someone else's.
      My wife drove it a few times and she thinks it's great and smooth.

    Hi Bjorn,
    what is your experience with rattle noises or these anoying noises you can hear in some cars whn you go over rough roads? i mean without an gasoline engine the interior should be less noisy and so you can hear normally more rattle noises or whatever when you switch off the radio. How is the build quality there compared to your BMW for example?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had some issues with rattle noise. Some of the noise was fixed, but I still have some rattle noise coming from the rear somewhere. This only occurs when driving on rough tarmac. The build quality in the BMW is in general better. And I'm missing some of the ergonomics in the E61, such as the dim LED in the roof that lids up the interior at night.

    Flush rear seat when folded to the floor
    Cargo hook strap point
    Additional solar panel on the roof (instead of panorama glass), front hood as well for additional electric power source.
    12VDC plug @ cargo bay
    Brighter cargo LED
    Brighter signal lights (snow, dirt, fog, etc. problems).
    Bigger glove box

    Better navigation computer (distance calculator would be very useful for predicting battery capacity, as well as traffic infos)

  • @Rustyka89

    I just want to add a few thoughts about the fossil-fuel car vs EV issue.
    Due to the higher emissions-norms, manufacturer's getting a hard time to cut down those deciliters from the consumption while they have to keep, or even increase performance. Mainly in Europe this is about to be a big problem in the future.
    The tendency is clear. Fossil-cars are getting more complex, and are used on the edge. They barely offer cars without a turbo nowadays. Horsepower/ccm is getting higher and higher. You can get a Ford Mondeo, with 1 liter engine that can 125 hp. I mean, come on! This down-sizing is really bad for the reliability of the engine. Most of these probably won't make high amount of running performance.
    It's starting to not worth to put more effort making even more unreliable fossil cars. We can't take big leaps from here to make this technology better. So engineers supposed to work on alternative ways like EVs and how to store energy even more efficiently.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Small engines with turbos also introduces turbo lag compared to naturally aspirated engines. Tesla owners are so spoiled there :P I remember watching a Top Gear episode where Jeremy Clarkson complains about a turbo engine with the lag. EVs must be heaven for him then.

    • @Rustyka89
      @Rustyka89 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bjørn Nyland Yes. Although there have been improvements on the turbo lag issue in the last few years, but my statements on reliability applies. And ye, a Model S would be a heaven for Jeremy, if he did'nt act like a child and refused to test it...

My only question to ask is whether you have ever experienced a busy supercharger station where you have had to wait before going on charge and if charging bays are generally available and not taken by random cars. Also, are people polite and don't just leave their tesla there for hours abusing the privilege? Hello Bjorn, can you please explain, why you think that the best intersection between driving speed and loading time (loading at Tesla SC) would be reachable with the driving speed of 160 km/h. I guess, the consumption of electricity will be very high at this speed. By the way, your German is very very good. I couldn't identify any accent, when you said the german word "Schmutz! ;-) Very fine, I love it!

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have done 120-140 km/h before, and including charging time it averaged about 85 km/h. Another Model S owner drove at 160 km/h and averaged 100 km/h including charging time. Finding the fastest traveling time is a very complex calculation that is hard or impossible to simulate. Not only does it depend on topology, but also on temperature, weather and load in the car. However, the SC is so fast that driving fast will pay off timewise. But when going above 160 km/h, the consumption goes up quite a bit. It also has to do with more heat generated from the battery and motor.

    Oh, and speaking of dimensions, I worry a bit about ground clearance. Some people have mentioned that the Tesla Model S is quite low to the ground, and there was a change (I think) in the minimum height setting with the air suspension because of some accidents in which cars struck objects in or on the road. But i have not yet been able to find ground clearance figures for the Mercedes Benz sedans or for the Audi A8, so I do not have a feel for how much the Tesla may or may not be unusual in this regard.

      I always drive on Normal suspension height and have never scraped the bottom of the car when going over speed bumps or similar.

    Hi Bjorn, what about the tires? How long did the last? considering the heavy torque in the rear wheels at least the tire life should be shorter....
    Congratulation about your "tutorials"!

      I have replaced the summer tires 1.5 times, meaning 6 tires were changed. The winter tires are still good for this winter season.

      Bjørn Nyland one important information is still missing: how many km you drove with summer tires? Probably in the D the the duration will be more balanced between front and rear.

      Luca Del Bo I did 31k on winter tires and 60k on summer tires.

    I like Tesla but I think that NOW there are still many compromises to deal with. The range, the charging time, ecc... However, EVEN IF you try to imagine that these problems doesn't exist, I don't get the convenience of the car. Is still expensive (compared to the same pricerange cars it's not on par with interior quality, design, luxury) and the fact that you don't pay for gas and the maintenace is lower vanishes when you think that you'll have to replace that expensive battery. So, if I didn'get something wrong, it's a lie that one can do big saves because he hasn't to pay for gas. What do you think Bjorn?

    It looks like you saved about 13,000-14,000 euros in diesel alone.

      Yeah, that sounds about right. And probably about € 2000 in maintenance and €4000 in toll roads/ferries.
