    My male japanese rat snake is the best snake I’ve ever had. I find this species to be gentle, curious, intelligent, and confident much like a Russian rat snake. He was cautious at first but now that he’s used to me he’ll crawl onto my arm if I offer it and even hang out on my lap-not for too long though because they are SUPER active. I have a pair and if let out to roam they will crawl from floor to ceiling and back again all. day. long. They are simple to keep and great eaters. Mine are very intentional and won’t strike something that smells like mouse but doesn’t look like it. They have good eyesight and you can observe them sizing things up. They will hang out and observe you doing your thing too. Really amazing, and the most beautiful species, in my opinion, to boot. Pictures don’t do them justice, their scales are semi translucent and jewel-like. Love your videos!

    Mines been doing good, he’s an eating machine. Never bites. Very fast though. Super fun.

      @@JzsReptiles I took a photo of the previous two I found but both photos are blurry.
      I found an absolutely beautiful keelback, which is as far I know one of the only poisonous snakes (not venomous).
      I found a few vipers in the past here too.

    I have a yearling Japnese Rat Snake and I absolutely love him. He might be taking the place as my top favorite snake. Thanks for this video, as I am trying to find out more about them! They definitely never stay still, but that's part of their charm! Active interaction.

    Nice spotlight on the species! I am glad that you mentioned the albino morph. There is one other pattern morph though. There is a striped morph, that has four long stripes that extend down the body. They are very subtle, so they are also called “patternless.” They are found in the same areas as the more checkered morph. Both pattern morphs are readily available in the pet trade in Japan, but I don’t know if the striped morph is being exported.

      First time I’m hearing about it, I’m going to see if they’re around. Thanks for the view!

      @@JzsReptiles No problem! I hope you can find a striped one, they’re gorgeous. They tend to be darker than the checkered ones in my experience. Mine’s dark metallic olive green with that same iridescent blue belly.

    how's the handling/ "chill time" with it outside the enclosure?
    Do they get better with age, to chill out with?

    What size enclosure would you recommend housing them

    • @JzsReptiles
      @JzsReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As adults I think an 18 x 18 x 36 in would suffice but they like to climb so taller wouldn’t hurt

    I have a young albino Male names Loki and he's super calm and chill with handling, he can be sassy but he has never struck at anyone or anything so that's good! What do you think a good bedding would be? The store I got him from said Aspin but idk if that would be the best kept damp..

    • @JzsReptiles
      @JzsReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on your setup. Aspen doesn’t stay damp. Cypress and coconut are good choices and Josh’s Frogs and biodude have really nice choices too
