The Japanese Keelback has such a cute little face. The footage of it eating a worm was hilarious, like a shoelace consuming another shoelace. And the mamushi has such gorgeous eyes but wow those striking shots made me jump, I’m surprised you managed to get that footage without being hurt.
I’m glad you brought up the butterflies and insects too. Japan has a lot of cool colorful butterflies and the locals love are pretty big on catching and releasing them.
When you come in on the train from Narita, you see all these rice paddies and small villages. Even in Winter, with the fields covered in snow, I always thought that they'd be home to a fair few snakes.
I just found a large Japanese Rat Snake in the rice fields near Narita Airport. Great video! It helped me make a positive species identification. Thanks!
@@loub747 man I haven’t found squat since I got back from AZ. I totally understand!! I still enjoyed it, cool to see snakes like that. I’d never even heard of that venomous snake…very cool looking!

Agree with the WLBros. Nice change of pace, great job with the presentation. Cool to see some of your "common" finds that would blow the rest of us away.
Great summary of all the snakes found in mainland Japan. A whole different story for the snakes found in Okinawa and the southeastern islands of Japan - like the infamous and notorious “Habu “.
Nice overview of the local species. It was interesting to see the Mamushi vibrating it's tail in a couple of the scenes. That is obviously not rattlesnake imitation going on since there are no rattlesnakes on that continent.
Really enjoyed your video. Fascinating stuff as I'm a keen snake enthusiast, but until now, I knew absolutely nothing about snakes of Japan. Greetings from Melbourne, Australia.
I live in the middle of Tokyo, and just discovered that snakes are living around my house. Went on a google expedition to find out the species and it turns out these buggers are "Aodaishou" aka Japanese rat snakes, which are not poisonous. Sigh of relief

I wasn't aware that there were any venomous snakes in the area until a student of mine brought up the Mamushi. I'll definitely be more careful when walking around tall grass or rocks! They are goreous, with those golden eyes. Will be easy enough to identify, thanks to the info in your video!

Great video, without the faux drama of a lot of TH-camrs. Any resources in English you’d recommend for herping in Japan? Both for species ID and locations/laws.
Thanks so much. I try and keep it real. I've been flying to Tokyo for the last 25 years. I have a lot of videos herping the Tokyo area. But that's about as far as I've been able to venture. The best herping is in Okinawa I believe. I haven't really found any resources, that's why I put this short video together. I have countless other videos in the Tokyo area if that interests you. Great subject matter and production including narration, photography and soundtrack that rivals National Geographic and all this even without the super attractive wife as the focal point..........you certainly have a career at the ready if/when you finally hang up the wheel/flight controls of that 747, Lou!! Thanks so much! Narration is really not my thing!!! That said, I haven't found anything lately, and felt the need to put out a video. Hopefully I find something soon. Lou B
Thanks for the video. I caught and released 2. Snakes in Miyazu, Amanohashidate yesterday, and 1 snake earlier this spring in the mountains of Minoh near Osaka. The one in Minoh was a black rat snake, amazingly similar to the ones I catch in the Pennsylvania hills. The Ones in Miyazu were the Japanese rat snake, with a muted green and brown color pattern, and other looked similar, but its color pattern was only shades of brown. The eyes were very different than the first, with a reddish orange color, much like the 4 lined snake’s eye color, but with a oval cat’s eye pupil. Maybe it’s a four lined, but the faded lines were not clearly visible, and the cat’s eye is different than the round eyes on the 4 lined ones I’ve seen. Maybe they vary a lot depending on where they are found. Can you take a guess as to the identify this one ?
Hey Lou Take a look at the short snake Video (snakes of siberut island) and look at that badass first snake looking like the asian eyelashviper. What do you think how many snakes out there deep in the jungle are still not found jet ? Would be cool if you as the Senior herper ;) organise a herping Trip to a island in west Sumatra like pulau sipura with chrisweet, davidsfeed Chandler etc. That would be the most amazing Trip and maybe possible for your professional snake eyes to find a new Species.
Interesting that 10 people on average die from mamushi bites a year. That seems like a lot for a snake well down on the LD50 ratings. Here in Australia it's usually less than five deaths per annum and we've got a lot more venomous species with much higher toxicity.
Yeah, I’m assuming it’s all the rice farming. Maybe more total bites per year than Oz? I have other videos of this species. It’s hard to see and quick to strike. Yeah, L/D not that high. Thanks for the comment! Lou B
