i read and watched a few interviews with him. in a few of them he made quite clear that he is not in the mood of talking to anybody on most days on a typical week, and that nothing at all really cheers him up, and that he had a really hard time to get away from alcohol, which is a never ending story for a heavy drinker anyway. seeing him suffering like that is really hard. he does not deserve how he puts himself down, i hope he finds a way to overcome the depression even when it looks impossible, and enjoy himself and life again, rock on john goodman!
What a great guy. He is clearly a great craftsman. And his humility is amazing. The film is, by the way, just amazing. The Oscar snub is amazing. At least they got it right at Cannes . . .
I cannot believe he didn't get Oscar nominated either for Barton Fink or The Big Lebowsky. Two dinamyte performances, big and loud, but still quite different. One of them is like a sympathetic and humane rendition of the Antichrist, the other one is a loud, rude and delusional Vietnam veteran. Both are fuckin' hilarious and touching, at times frightening.
John's 'warts' are in fact, his treasure. My husband, also with strong sober years under HIS belt, often saw Goodman in Johnny White's..a popular NOLA watering place. Being alcoholic is a challenge, and many of us in time, learn to use the problems we have to create. John is ever wonderful to watch, his deeply layered portrayals, even the loudmouthed characters... touch you. And I remember saying to my husband when we were watching him in 'Treme".. ' you know? Creighton Bernette was actually the most vulnerable of all."
honestly I probably would sound the same as the interviewer if I were sitting in the same room as John Goodman with non-stop rapid fire impromptu questions, but I think prepping more or having more of an arc / structure would have been better
I would have a different plan of attack if I had it to do again... mostly, not asking him about him. And I'd get him out of that f-ing chair.Everyone I know who knows this man loves him and is amazed how down to earth he is.I am always seeking a line of discussion that engages the interviewee. Sometimes, a needle in a human haystack.
DP/30 relax, you did good. John's isn't the best person to interview. And halfway through you can tell he's a lot more relaxed and having fun with the interview.
miguedro I don't feel bad about the interview itself... but my goal is always to make the guest comfortable... and he rarely was. If I get the chance to try again with him, I will approach it with the insight of this experience.
the well intentioned but hapless interviewer (and most interviewers today) would have found his work much more effective and less stressful (also much less painful for John Goodman) if he had the patience and trust in his subject to ask open ended questions and then to stop talking long enough for the interviewee to think and respond. Marc Maron, who I love also has this problem in his interviews, (see his recent difficult podcast with Harry Dean Stanton) (hint, Open ended questions contain words starting with "w" such as "why" "when" "who" and "what" though "how" is a good one too, if your question has no such words, it's probably not open ended.) Too many interviewers proudly state their own "in the know" ideas and theories then leave the only possible answer a yes or no, or worse just trail off after an assertive statement with the word "or" as in "So you did X because of Y and felt Z about it. Or.....?" That is not a question. I met Goodman 10 years ago and his apparently labored breathing and gurgly speaking voice were identical to this, only worse. My impression is his health seems to have improved. He's thinner for one thing.
He was definitely high-strung and uncomfortable entering the interview but I felt that you handled it very poorly. Your questions had a demeaning tone and you even insulted him at one point, which was quite obvious. Laughing at his response with "I don't even know how to follow that up" might be one of the most painful interview experiences I have ever witnessed. I don't think most could've been "relaxed" with your interview style.

This man has a real problem breathing. Quick, someone fix John Goodman. I never get the most from my lungs so he's welcome to at LEAST one of mine x Hashtag it's hard to watch one of your heroes struggle to breath.
It sounds like he has congestive heart failure. John Goodman is welcome to every breath I took during "The Big Lebowski," every laugh, multiplied by the probably 100 times I watched it. I don't think I inhaled or exhaled during Dan's scenes in "Barton Fink," so I'll gladly give Mr. Goodman all the breaths I should have taken. I don't think we'll have him for long. And I love him dearly.
The interviewer is kind of douchey at times. Especially when he keeps on insisting and pushing the, "What was it like to be type-cast?" question, based on (apparently) two roles the guy had. He apparently was trying to find some kind of conflict that just isn't there. Can't blame Goodman's reaction because I've never thought of him as a type-cast actor, as his roles are always so damn diverse, and he always nails them. Get better, interviewer.
He has the warmest eyes I've ever seen
