'THE GHOST OF NEIL DIAMOND' is a dark comedy about a fading folk legend, who's homeless, who goes through constant rejections, including his partner, who finds himself completely alone, but it's all different because it's set in the Far East, where the only option left is to impersonate - though it gnaws his soul - the one and only Neil Diamond. Published in 2008, with revised edition in 2010, predating this film a few years. But must see this Llewyn. Sounds such a terrific movie and it's such an amazing and wonderful coincidence.
I wish he would have mentioned that while this movie was not based on Dylan......it WAS loosely based on Dave Van Ronk.....the man who took Dylan in when he arrived in New York! The man who let Bob sleep on his couch until he got on his feet.....Dave had a very famous album called "Inside Dave Van Ronk"......Dave recorded most of the same songs that were picked to be on the soundtrack.....read the book "The Mayor of Mc Dougal Street" to get a feel of the real "Inside Dave Van Ronk"......
We all know a LIewyn or we've all been one at one time in our lives. But maybe it's better not to compromise. If you can't be the best, what's the point? Maybe you can make a living, but essentially is that any different from any other type of work? And it's not making a living doing what you love, it's making a living butchering what you love. But the great thing about the internet, it preserves everything, so eventually someone might appreciate what you do. It might not be in your lifetime, but eventually you will find an audience, And even if it's only a small audience of a few hundred, that's a few hundred souls you've touched. And remember, every thing no matter how worthless in its time, eventually becomes valued. A piece of medieval graffiti becomes a historical record. A Roman rubbish dump - becomes a treasure trove.

Artists are always reinventing themselves. Prince changed so many genres in his career too. Started out RnB but also had some rock in his first album. Then it was Rock and Pop for several years till Sign of the Times which was jazz funk. Dylan felt the revolution coming so he was smart to catch the wave.
He didnt go along with the rock scene, people booed him and hated him because he played electric music, it wasnt even rock music, the world had never heard anything like it and he lost a lot of fans because of it, but instead of going back to his acoustic guitar he said fuck em and played electric because thats what he wanted to do, so no he did the exact opposite of sell out.

Dylan’s never cared about what made money and what didn’t, he’s always done what he wanted and let the world catch up with it.

He was lived in my neighborhood in Greenwich Village . The interview was broadcast on WFMU radio and a long story here but the tape was never returned to me . It is the holy grail of my life ! Wish I had that tape now!

At the end of the movie, the night before Bob Dylan, we see the clancy brothers, who sing old traditional songs and didso for a whole career. also, when bob dylan does come out, he sings a song thats a straight up reworking of a folk song. sae melody, almost the same lyrics. though they might have chosen that just because its the footage they had....
A very complex role. Imagine starring in a film like that and then do Star Wars... Llewyn Davis doesn't compromise his artistic vision, but Oscar Isaac definitely does. Still a great actor. The film has nothing to do with Bob Dylan, it is inspired by fellow folk musician David Van Ronk (title too).
well, adr, Llewyn was not exactly exclusive to "old" folk songs. "Shoals of Herring" was first published in 1960, but it does fit nicely into the story and is easily disguised as a folk standard...due to the brilliance of it's writer and lyricist, Ewan MacColl. a minor authenticity blemish on an otherwise amazing film that Llewyn's father could hardly have had a previous liking for the song that made him soil his britches in 1961. most people will never notice.
"Shoals of Herring" is an imitation folk song, so to speak, written by a guy very much immersed in real folk songs. I see your point about the anachronism in the plot, however. "Please Mr. Kennedy" is another anachronism: The manned spaceflight program was top secret until the following year.
oh great catch! the neat thing about shoals is that it Ewan did not actually write the lyrics, he assembled them from his interviews with scads of N Sea fishermen for a BBC documentary on the topic. really brilliant and i think knowing that can add so much beauty to listening to or singing the song.
This interviewer has failed to truly grasp the story and the character. His observations on the film are so shallow and flat out wrong from the jump. But I’m sure that the Coens are used to dealing with men of lesser minds by now....

Lee Swagerty I don't think the movie was so much about not selling out, since Llewyn did that Please Mr Kennedy album just because he really needed money. So it's not about some uncompromising character, what I got from it is that it's basically about a human being, who's struggling. It was very easy to identify with him.

Bob Dylan is he hadn't sold out??? Dylan didn't sell out, he reinvented folk music. Llewyn Davis wanted to express it the way it was.
