    I’ve been loving my Gabriel Gold glasses for about 4 years. I have 2. I also have 4 of the Gabriel Standards. One day I will upgrade to all golds. Back when I was researching this purchase I narrowed it down to these and the Zaltos. I found them to be similar in my taste testing, but loved the look of the Gabriel, the slight curve made them a bit more interesting to me. They make great wedding gifts!

    Dear Madeline, a very good video and well explained! Also "cheaper" wines, drunk from a handmade glass, e.g. Zaltoglas, are perceived differently than from machine-made glasses. Lightness and fine transparency clearly increase the enjoyment enormously. My favourite universal glass for red wine would be the Zalto Bordeaux Denk'Art.😃💕🍷

    You're the top, Madeline! Love your manner of presentation and the immediacy of your honesty. I had some Glasvin Universals (I cheaped out on these Chinese hand blown glasses because the Zalto Universals were not available at the time). The Glasvins broke at mid-stem within a week of purchase. Zalto's finally became available and you are SO right about them. Most definitely would not recommend the Glasvin version unless one simply wants them as display models. They're nerve-racking to use thus eliminating the pleasure of drinking wine from a fine glass.

    To simplify my life, I was looking for the one glass to rule them all. And thanks to your very vivid characterisation I became aware of the Gabriel, which (in the StandArt version) very conveniently sells for just under USD 20 here in Switzerland. I must confess that I like the unusual, non-rigid character of the Zalto, but the price/performance ratio of the Gabriel StandArt is amazing. I have since re-tasted some of my favourite everyday wines (like the entry level Rüdesheimer Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from Bischöfliches Weingut in Rüdesheim, the standard Lagrein by Muri Griess or Eva Fricke's simple but delicious Kiedrich Riesling) and I find the Gabriel adds a lot of information (and fun) to these wines that I thought I knew inside out. Thank you again for that!

    For anyone struggling to make the decission: Gabriel Glas Standart (I have the industrial glasses, I cannot even speak on the handblown version) completely enhanced my wine experience. I am not kidding, I smell and taste way more in comparisson to my other glasses. I tend to be super skeptical when it comes to these things, but I wanted to spoil myself and see if I could really notice a difference. And boy did I notice it!

  • @briant3404
    @briant3404 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Video! for fairness,i think rather than 3 oz in each, , it would be better to fill each glass to the widest point, as the jancis glass is made to be filled higher to it's widest point, you could call it the waist , round or deeper V shaped bottoms need more wine in them to perform and seem to be more of a meal glass. obviously you are going to get more wine surface area with the widest point.
    the other thing for me is how glasses fit on to the face, if they are too small at the mouth they dont allow you to put your nose all the way in to it . eyeglasses also pose a problem. Also the way it fits on your face affects the path of the way the air flows in the glass when you sniff or breath in and out of it. and on long and big glasses of course that is more of a factor. its amazing how wines taste so different in different glasses.
    the shape of the chamber also affects the speed of the air flowing through it. you can study acoustical theory of horn speaker systems to get an idea of how different shapes affect air..

      Ha! Me too (as I'm sure you saw!) Yes, these glasses are great, especially if you love big bold red wine. I will note that all the other glasses tested in this video are shorter than the Riedels you just mentioned.

  • @hermanmunster7672
    @hermanmunster7672 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Over the years I’ve had so many Riedel glasses break either by guests or from washing them that I eventually switched to that Schott Zwiesel you showed (and then put aside) in the beginning of your video. I’ve had two break in 3 years. And when they did break, the low cost made me not care that they did.
    Are the Zalto and Riedel “better?” Yes. Wine drinking with those is a more ethereal experience. But for regular use and dinner guests, I’m sticking with the Schott Zwiesel.

    • @Winefolly
      @Winefolly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      indeed. sure. But I wanted to talk about the best. That said, I didn't say there was anything wrong with them. If you're serving people dinners, you're already better than most! So, I'd just stick to that, I guess :)

  • @fnherzog
    @fnherzog 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I did a similar experiment but used only Zalto denk'art glasses and tested the same wine in their white, universal, bordeaux and burgundy glass. I only bought one of each to figure out, which type of glasses I should get and ultimately settled on universal and burgundy. Their bordeaux glass didn't work at all for me. Very big and wide, the wine is somewhat lost in it, even if you have a high alcohol cab. If you put a high alcohol cab in the pinot glass, it highlights the alcohol even more. The universal worked best for most wines I tested, and the burgundy works really well with pinot and nebbiolo (which are my favourites)

  • @maengel071
    @maengel071 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jancis Robinson x Richard Brendon is the best go to glass, but probably best for more complex whites, even though it is marketed as a one fits all. Elegant, beautiful aesthetic, dishwasher proof, albeit it needs to be handled with care as it is very delicate. When opening a 97+ wines there is no alternative to Zalto. The burgundy and gravitas omega (burgundy without base) are simply awesome. I got the whole range over time and have never looked back.

    I love the mix of knowledge vs total lack of shall I say snobbiness - it's refreshing - the usual BS segment was less BS too, also refreshing. Good job. I've not tried the Zalto universal but my top glass so far in all these years is the Zalto Bordeaux with second place going to the Riedel Sommeliers Superleggero Burgundy Grand Cru - which is twice the size and weight of the Zalto but similarly delicate as the name implies. In a couple of months I'm going to order a few more types to try, though. :-)

    With the wine tasting so different in each glass, what are the chances someone could not like a wine in their glass but would like it in another glass? My next question is, how do we really know what a wine was meant to taste like since that wine is always showing differently dependent on the glass?

  • @redblock5150

    I use the Schott Zwiesel "Air" series of glasses. Very thin glass and stem with just the very subtle hint of a lip on the bowl. I used to freak out about any kind of lip on a glass, but the Air series glasses are so comfortable to drink from and they're pretty tough. The retail on the Air series glasses is $18.00! I got all of mine at Williams Sonoma for $11 a stem on closeout! I liked them so much, I bought out all of the Schott Zwiesel Air inventory (over 70!) in the stores in the Twin Cities area! Basically, a dozen Burgundy, a dozen Bordeaux, a dozen "Light Bodied White Wine, 18 Champagne and 22 "All Purpose" glasses.

    For Riesling itself, I like a tall/ thin champagne flute, it focuses flavors nicely. YRMV!

    No mention of the best, titanium infused schott zwiesel Cabernet glass? I have two 6 packs, and they are my Crown Jewels for dinner parties. They are an amazing glass, and boy can they take abuse.

    I don't think anyone uses lead in crystal anymore. They've gone to titanium on the high end glasses.

      Yes, there are quite a few that I didn't mention. What's your opinion on Mark Thomas? What do you think of those crazy shapes!
      Also, I think James Suckling has a great glass partnership with Lalique that's worth adding in here, since we're talking about missed mentions: www.lalique.com/en/the-lalique-james-suckling-100-points-collection -

      I once went to a tasting where we tried the same wines from a regular riedel, Zalto and MT. In my opinion, MT was absolutely the best and I've spent the last 3 months waiting for my glasses. You won't believe it, but my parcel got lost 3 times! Anyway, it was worth waiting for them, wonderful, wonderful glasses. Oh, I got the double bend.
      The James Suckling one looks interesting but I believe that one of the things that makes a glass exceptional is a thin stem. So I think I'll stick with my Double Bends 😊

      @@tangoromeo Wowsa! Yeah, those definitely caught my eye. What's the opening diameter size? Does it work better on reds? (See.. I'm already brimming with questions). I'll have to order one and give it a go. (P.S. my glass collection makes no sense... I have at least one of everything)

    • @tangoromeo
      @tangoromeo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wine Folly They make different shapes for different reds, I have both the Double Bend Red for heavier wines and Double Bend Red Expression for Pinot Noir, Garnacha etc. I also got the Double Bend White. I can check the opening diameter for you in a couple of days, when I get home. Btw I think I need to order your cleaning cloth!

    I'm sorry but there are a lot of faults
    Zalto and Gabriel are not AUSTRIAN made Glasses- this is a not true.
    Both have only an office in Austria.
    As i live very close i would know the factories. They produce in cheap production countries
    from Slovakia to Ukraine who knows
    :-((
    Zwiesel is German made thats correct

    Hey there - not for the nothing but a cerified sommelier should really be able to properly pronounce the name fot the most distinguished wine glass manuafacture of all time - Riedel. It rymes with "beetle" or "needle." I love your videos and your work - but this is a big miss. Undermines your crediblilty.

    • @Winefolly
      @Winefolly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The fact that you completely disregarded all the work in this and instead focused on my lack of pronunciation is asinine. Sure, you're right; I bombed the pronunciation but this comment just makes me shake my head and LOL. Thanks for the correction, but no, I disagree. Tomato tomato.
