  • Black children who are raised in foster care suffer multiple disadvantages. This talk challenges viewers to get educated about injustices that happen in communities of color. Dr. Kizzy Lopez’s passion is fueled by her personal experiences as a former foster youth and experiences with homelessness while attending community college. Currently, she works as an Assistant Professor in the Social Work Degree Completion Program at Fresno Pacific University. She serves as the research faculty member for the department primarily teaching Introduction to Social Science Research and Thesis courses. Her research focuses on the experiences of underrepresented communities, particularly those who have experienced foster care or homelessness. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

So forget blaming the irrresponsible 'parents' who popped you out. They're absolved. It's those who stepped in, to help, who are the problem ?
Put away your anger. Go learn to read and think

Simple - so all can understand, clear in the messages, informed with references and examples, honest and to the target. Congratulations.. I learned important things in those 11 minutes.

      Because it's nonsense.
The issue here is reckless procreation which creates baby mama culture

Many of those adopted out of foster care still end up in the juvenile justice system as too often adoptive parents are not trauma informed and would give up their adopted child instead of doing the work to help them.

I spent 2 years in foster care and I'm white. To suggest that I was somehow aligned with the oppressor in that situation is so absurd I would laugh if it wasn't so horrific

I find it very disheartening that you walked away from that presentation with the viewpoint that she is somehow maligning white children caught up in the same foster care system that she was. The presenter spoke from anecdotal knowledge. However, Ms. Lopez also heavily referenced scientific research data throughout her short presentation. The young lady was not talking about white children being "aligned" with anyone; she made it clear that they were victims of their circumstances just like every other foster care placement. What I heard was that white children get adopted out of the system more quickly than african americans due to societal systemic issues which work against blacks. That is really all.
